Book excerpt: This volume is a handbook which contains data dealing with the characteristics of systems with distributed and lumped parameters. Some 200 problems are discussed and, for each problem, all the main characteristics of the solution are listed: standardizing functions, Green's functions, transfer functions or matrices, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues with their asymptotics, roots of characteristic equations, and others. In addition to systems described by a single differential equation, the handbook also includes degenerate multiconnected systems.

Book excerpt: This book is a continuation of the book Green's Functions and Transfer Functions [35] written some ten years ago. However, there is no overlap whatsoever in the contents of the two books, and this book can be used quite independently of the previous one. This series of books represents a new kind of handbook, in which are collected data on the characteristics of systems with distributed and lumped parameters. The present volume covers some two hundred problems. Essentially, this book should be considered as a desktop handbook, intended, like [35], to give rapid "on-line" access to relevant data about problems. For each problem, the book lists all the main characteristics of the solution: standardising functions, Green's functions, transfer functions or matrices, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues with their asymptotics, roots of characteristic equations, and other data. In addition to systems described by a single differential equation, this volume also includes degenerate multiconnected systems, systems for which no Green's function or matrix exists, and other special cases which are important for applications.

Book excerpt: This book presents recent results and envisages new solutions of the stabilization problem for infinite-dimensional control systems. Its content is based on the extended versions of presentations at the Thematic Minisymposium “Stabilization of Distributed Parameter Systems: Design Methods and Applications” at ICIAM 2019, held in Valencia from 15 to 19 July 2019. This volume aims at bringing together contributions on stabilizing control design for different classes of dynamical systems described by partial differential equations, functional-differential equations, delay equations, and dynamical systems in abstract spaces. This includes new results in the theory of nonlinear semigroups, port-Hamiltonian systems, turnpike phenomenon, and further developments of Lyapunov's direct method. The scope of the book also covers applications of these methods to mathematical models in continuum mechanics and chemical engineering. It is addressed to readers interested in control theory, differential equations, and dynamical systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the study of distributed control problems governed by various nonsmooth state systems. The main questions investigated include: existence of optimal pairs, first order optimality conditions, state-constrained systems, approximation and discretization, bang-bang and regularity properties for optimal control. In order to give the reader a better overview of the domain, several sections deal with topics that do not enter directly into the announced subject: boundary control, delay differential equations. In a subject still actively developing, the methods can be more important than the results and these include: adapted penalization techniques, the singular control systems approach, the variational inequality method, the Ekeland variational principle. Some prerequisites relating to convex analysis, nonlinear operators and partial differential equations are collected in the first chapter or are supplied appropriately in the text. The monograph is intended for graduate students and for researchers interested in this area of mathematics.

The book covers topics of distributed parameter control systems in the areas of simulation, identification, state estimation, stability, control (optimal, stochastic, and coordinated), numerical approximation methods, optimal sensor, and actuator positioning. Five applications works include chemical reactors, heat exchangers, petroleum reservoirs/aquifers, and nuclear reactors. The text will be a useful reference for both graduate students and professional researchers working in the field.

Book excerpt: The research detailed in this monograph was originally motivated by our interest in control problems involving partial and delay differential equations. Our attempts to apply control theory techniques to such prob lems in several areas of science convinced us that in the need for better and more detailed models of distributed/ continuum processes in biology and mechanics lay a rich, interesting, and challenging class of fundamen tal questions. These questions, which involve science and mathematics, are typical of those arising in inverse or parameter estimation problems. Our efforts on inverse problems for distributed parameter systems, which are infinite dimensional in the most common realizations, began about seven years ago at a time when rapid advances in computing capabilities and availability held promise for significant progress in the development of a practically useful as well as theoretically sound methodology for such problems. Much of the research reported in our presentation was not begun when we outlined the plans for this monograph some years ago. By publishing this monograph now, when only a part of the originally intended topics are covered (see Chapter VII in this respect), we hope to stimulate the research and interest of others in an area of scientific en deavor which has exceeded even our optimistic expectations with respect to excitement, opportunity, and stimulation. The computer revolution alluded to above and the development of new codes allow one to solve rather routinely certain estimation problems that would have been out of the question ten years ago.

Book excerpt: The articles in this volume focus on control theory of systems governed by nonlinear linear partial differential equations, identification and optimal design of such systems, and modelling of advanced materials. Optimal design of systems governed by PDEs is a relatively new area of study, now particularly relevant because of interest in optimization of fluid flow in domains of variable configuration, advanced and composite materials studies and "smart" materials which include possibilities for built in sensing and control actuation. The book will be of interest to both applied mathematicians and to engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions about stability arise in almost every control problem. There are many physical problems in which exponential stability is too strong and for which the concept of strong stability is appropriate. This book provides a solid mathematical framework for a structured approach to strongly stabilizable systems through integration of fundamental theory, physical applications, and numerical results. The author includes a mathematical framework for studying PDE models of large flexible structures, an important class of applications.

Book excerpt: For dynamic distributed systems modeled by partial differential equations, existing methods of sensor location in parameter estimation experiments are either limited to one-dimensional spatial domains or require large investments in software systems. With the expense of scanning and moving sensors, optimal placement presents a critical problem. Optimal Measurement Methods for Distributed Parameter System Identification discusses the characteristic features of the sensor placement problem, analyzes classical and recent approaches, and proposes a wide range of original solutions, culminating in the most comprehensive and timely treatment of the issue available. By presenting a step-by-step guide to theoretical aspects and to practical design methods, this book provides a sound understanding of sensor location techniques. Both researchers and practitioners will find the case studies, the proposed algorithms, and the numerical examples to be invaluable. This text also offers results that translate easily to MATLAB and to Maple. Assuming only a basic familiarity with partial differential equations, vector spaces, and probability and statistics, and avoiding too many technicalities, this is a superb resource for researchers and practitioners in the fields of applied mathematics, electrical, civil, geotechnical, mechanical, chemical, and environmental engineering.
