Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven species of brown seaweeds have been studied to obtain information on the percentage yield and physico-chemical properties of their alginates. Percentage yield varied between 21-32% when extracted in 0.1 M Na6CO3 for 24 hours. Lower yields were observed when the samples were extracted for 6 hours. Intrinsic viscosity varied between 2.38 dl.f-1 to 14 dl.g-1 while M/G ratio were in the range of 0.42 to 2.10. Sargassum spp. gives good quality alginate based on the percentage yield and physicochemical properties. [Authors' abstract].

Book Synopsis Characterization of Bioactive Components in Edible Algae by : Leonel Pereira
Download or read book Characterization of Bioactive Components in Edible Algae written by Leonel Pereira and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae have been used since ancient times as food for humans, animal feed, agricultural fertilizer, and as a source of substances for therapeutic use. Currently, seaweed represents a vast source of raw materials used in the pharmaceutical, food, traditional medicine, and cosmetics industries. They are nutritionally valuable, both fresh and dried, or as ingredients in a wide variety of pre-made foods. In particular, seaweed contains significant amounts of protein, lipids, minerals, and vitamins. Information is limited on the role of algae and their metabolites in therapy. Only a few taxa have been studied for use in medicine. Many traditional cultures report the healing powers of selected algae in tropical and subtropical marine forms. This is especially true in the maritime areas of Asia, where the sea plays a significant role in daily activities. However, currently, only a few genera and species of algae are involved in aspects of medicine and therapy. The beneficial uses of seaweed or seaweed products include those that can mimic specific manifestations of human disease, production of antibiotic compounds, or improved human nutrition.
Download or read book Alginates written by Shakeel Ahmed and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alginate is a hydrophilic, biocompatible, biodegradable, and relatively economical polymer generally found in marine brown algae. The modification in the alginate molecule after polymerization has shown strong potential in biomedical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology applications such as wound dressing, drug delivery, dental treatment, in cell culture and tissue engineering. Besides this, alginates have industrial applications too in the paper and food industries as plasticizers and additives. The few books that have been published on alginates focus more on their biology. This current book focuses on the exploration of alginates and their modification, characterization, derivatives, composites, hydrogels as well as the new and emerging applications.
