Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entertaining and informative, Pets in America is a portrait of Americans' relationships with the cats, dogs, birds, fishes, rodents, and other animals we call our own. More than 60 percent of U.S. households have pets, and America grows more pet-friendly every day. But as Katherine C. Grier demonstrates, the ways we talk about and treat our pets--as companions, as children, and as objects of beauty, status, or pleasure--have their origins long ago. Grier begins with a natural history of animals as pets, then discusses the changing role of pets in family life, new standards of animal welfare, the problems presented by borderline cases such as livestock pets, and the marketing of both animals and pet products. She focuses particularly on the period between 1840 and 1940, when the emotional, behavioral, and commercial characteristics of contemporary pet keeping were established. The story is filled with the warmth and humor of anecdotes from period diaries, letters, catalogs, and newspapers. Filled with illustrations reflecting the whimsy, the devotion, and the commerce that have shaped centuries of American pet keeping, Pets in America ultimately shows how the history of pets has evolved alongside changing ideas about human nature, child development, and community life. This book accompanies a museum exhibit, "Pets in America," which opens at the McKissick Museum in Columbia, South Carolina, in December 2005 and will travel to five other cities from May 2006 through May 2008.

Book excerpt: *Note that the supplementary electronic material for Chapters 26-40 will be available in the Support Material tab soon* This new edition of Cardiovascular Disease in Companion Animals, authored by two leading experts in the field, now covers the horse as well as the dog and cat. The comprehensive, superbly illustrated book has been completely revised and expanded from the original Cardiovascular Disease in Small Animal Medicine. Five key sections provide clearly written overviews of normal cardiovascular structure and function, pathophysiologic derangements and their manifestations, clinical cardiology testing and interpretation, and extensive guidance for cardiovascular disease diagnosis and management. A broad collection of clinical images, graphics, tables, diagrams, and a Summary Drug Tables for each species enhances the book’s utility as a practical clinical resource. Up-to-date references support the focus on cardiovascular diseases and reflect important developments in veterinary cardiology and practice. A valuable companion website contains videos and additional images to enhance each chapter. Since first publication in 2007, Dr Ware’s authoritative yet user-friendly guide to cardiovascular diseases in veterinary practice has been widely praised. This book contains even more illustrations of the highest quality. Coverage also includes diagnostic considerations for various clinical problems, procedures and techniques for patient evaluation, and detailed management strategies for congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, and other complications of cardiovascular disease. This second edition is a must-have for veterinary practitioners, students, interns, residents, and others with an in-depth interest in veterinary cardiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking and surprising book that explores the ever-evolving relationship between humans and domesticated animals. The domestication of animals changed the course of human history. But what are the consequences for these animals who have abandoned their wild existence in exchange for our care and protection? Domestication has proven to be a wildly successful survival strategy, but this success has not been without its drawbacks. A modern dairy cow’s daily energy output equals that of a Tour de France rider. Feral cats overpopulate urban areas. And our methods of breeding horses and dogs have resulted in debilitating and sometimes lethal genetic diseases. But these problems and more can be addressed, if we have the will and the compassion. Human values and choices determine an animal’s lot in life even before he or she is born. Just as a sculptor’s hands shape clay, so human values shape our animals—for good and or evil. The little-examined, yet omnipresent act of breeding lies at the core of Gavin Ehringer’s eye-opening book.

Book excerpt: Although scholars in the disciplines of law, psychology, philosophy, and sociology have published a considerable number of prescriptive, normative, and theoretical studies of animals in society, Pet Politics presents the first study of the development of companion animal or pet law and policy in Canada and the United States by political scientists. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals-cats, dogs, and horses-for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies. Finally, they examine the enforcement of these laws and policies by agencies and the courts. Using an eclectic mix of original empirical data, original case studies, and interviews-and relying on general theories and research about the policy process and the sociopolitical function of legality-the authors illustrate that pet policy is a unique field of political struggle, a conflict that originates from differing perspectives about whether pets are property or autonomous beings, and clashing norms about the care of animals. The result of the political struggle, the authors argue, is difficulty in the enactment of policies and especially in the implementation and enforcement of laws that might improve the welfare of companion animals.
