Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is presented as one of the necessary conditions that must be met to obtain a Ph.D. degree in the Engineering Faculty at Universidad de los Andes. Its purpose is three fold: first, to serve as complementary reference work on what I know is a research topic which I, and other researchers, will be following in the near future: chaos in transit systems. Second, as a tool for me in order to present a coherent compendium of the work I have been advancing on the past three years; namely the study of simplistic models of a vehicle interacting with traffic lights. Finally, in the third place, to comply with one of the Ph.D. program requisites. Throughout the time I have invested in the Ph.D. program, I have participated in various research projects within the research group that I am part of. So far I have helped to develop a conceptual model for a research center in Colombia (56), contributed to a paper that discusses how variation can be a useful concept for management (26), and focused the effort of the last years into understanding the conditions under which a simple traffic model is subject to chaos (49). This document will focus on the most recent of those projects.

Book excerpt: Rapid developments in nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory have led to publication of many valuable monographs and books. However, most of these texts are devoted to the classical nonlinear dynamics systems, for example the Duffing or van der Pol oscillators, and either neglect or refer only briefly to systems with motion-dependent discontinuities. In engineering practice a good part of problems is discontinuous in nature, due to either deliberate reasons such as the introduction of working clearance, and/or the finite accuracy of the manufacturing processes. The main objective of this volume is to provide a general methodology for describing, solving and analysing discontinuous systems. It is compiled from the dedicated contributions written by experts in the field of applied nonlinear dynamics and chaos. The main focus is on mechanical engineering problems where clearances, piecewise stiffness, intermittent contact, variable friction or other forms of discontinuity occur. Practical applications include vibration absorbers, percussive drilling of hard materials and dynamics of metal cutting. Contents:PreliminariesMathematical Models of Mechanical Systems with DiscontinuitiesTemporal and Spatial Discontinuity TransformationsExtensions of Cell Mapping for Discontinuous SystemsImpact OscillatorDynamics of Piecewise Linear OscillatorsQuenching of Self-Excited Vibrations by Impact DamperDynamic Phenomena in Gear BoxesRigorous Methods and Numerical Results for Dry Friction ProblemsForced Self-Excited Vibration with Dry FrictionStick–Slip and the Phase-Space ReconstructionMultidegree of Freedom Systems with Dry FrictionDynamic Instabilities in Spinning DisksImpacts and Dry FrictionNonlinear Dynamics of Orthogonal Metal CuttingDynamics of Ultrasonic Drilling of Hard Materials Readership: Mechanical engineers. keywords:Nonlinear Dynamics;Discontinuity;Mechanical System;Impacts;Dry Friction;Applications;Chaos “… this volume provides readers with an excellent treatment of such discontinuous systems and can be a good source of ideas to attack those systems effectively … one is immediately obliged to recognize that it is in fact a series of fifteen jewels, which one would hardly find in the relevant more mathematically oriented literature.” Mathematical Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 5th Experimental Chaos Conference was a gathering of scientists and engineers who work on real-world systems that behave in a nonlinear and, often, chaotic fashion. The proceedings present discoveries of chaotic behavior, explanation of nonlinear phenomena in the laboratory, and applications of nonlinear and chaotic effects to devices and techniques for improving performance and surmounting technical obstacles. Experimental work is presented on chaos in semiconductor superlattices, spatiotemporal chaos in magnetic materials, instabilities in magnetic fluids, bifurcations of hexagonal patterns in lasers, and discrete rotating waves. New phenomena are exhibited on amplitude death in coupled oscillators, vortex crystals, wakes in soap films, chaotic dynamics of ocean waves, and microscopic chaos. Applications of chaotic dynamics are offered in the areas of chaotic pulse trains in digital communications, detection of changes in EEGs, detection of unstable periodic orbits in noisy data, cellular automata and warfare, detection of n:m phase synchronization, methods in acoustic chaos, chaos in the machine tool-cutting process, and a nonlinear airfoil. The broad range of topics and fields touches on a wide variety of systems whose behavior is now better understood and applied through the use of chaotic dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph dedicated entirely to problems of stability and chaotic behaviour in planetary systems and its subsystems. The author explores the three rapidly developing interplaying fields of resonant and chaotic dynamics of Hamiltonian systems, the dynamics of Solar system bodies, and the dynamics of exoplanetary systems. The necessary concepts, methods and tools used to study dynamical chaos (such as symplectic maps, Lyapunov exponents and timescales, chaotic diffusion rates, stability diagrams and charts) are described and then used to show in detail how the observed dynamical architectures arise in the Solar system (and its subsystems) and in exoplanetary systems. The book concentrates, in particular, on chaotic diffusion and clearing effects. The potential readership of this book includes scientists and students working in astrophysics, planetary science, celestial mechanics, and nonlinear dynamics.

Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough investigation of the application of chaos theory and fractal analysis to computer vision. The field of chaos theory has been studied in dynamical physical systems, and has been very successful in providing computational models for very complex problems ranging from weather systems to neural pathway signal propagation. Computer vision researchers have derived motivation for their algorithms from biology and physics for many years as witnessed by the optical flow algorithm, the oscillator model underlying graphical cuts and of course neural networks. These algorithms are very helpful for a broad range of computer vision problems like motion segmentation, texture analysis and change detection. The contents of this book include chapters in biological vision systems, foundations of chaos and fractals, behavior of images and image sequences in phase space, mathematical measures for analyzing phase space, applications to pre-attentive vision and applications to post-attentive vision. This book is intended for graduate students, upper division undergraduates, researchers and practitioners in image processing and computer vision. The readers will develop a solid understanding of the concepts of chaos theory and their application to computer vision. Readers will be introduced to a new way of thinking about computer vision problems from the perspective of complex dynamical systems. This new approach will provide them a deeper understanding of the various phenomena present in complex image scenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive introduction to quantitative approaches to complex adaptive systems. Practically all areas of life on this planet are constantly confronted with complex systems, be it ecosystems, societies, traffic, financial markets, opinion formation and spreading, or the internet and social media. Complex systems are systems composed of many elements that interact strongly with each other, which makes them extremely rich dynamical systems showing a huge range of phenomena. Properties of complex systems that are of particular importance are their efficiency, robustness, resilience, and proneness to collapse. The quantitative tools and concepts needed to understand the co-evolutionary nature of networked systems and their properties are challenging. The book gives a self-contained introduction to these concepts, so that the reader will be equipped with a toolset that allows them to engage in the science of complex systems. Topics covered include random processes of path-dependent processes, co-evolutionary dynamics, dynamics of networks, the theory of scaling, and approaches from statistical mechanics and information theory. The book extends beyond the early classical literature in the field of complex systems and summarizes the methodological progress made over the past 20 years in a clear, structured, and comprehensive way.
