Finding an affordable behavioral therapy that could enhance cognitive performance in the academic setting would be valuable. Acute exercise has been associated with both reduced anxiety and improved cognition. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effects of 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on state anxiety (SA), cognition, and academic performance in college-aged individuals. Participants: Thirty college students, with high- (n=9) or low-trait (n=21) anxiety, were solicited for this experiment. Fourteen were females and sixteen were males. Methods: Participation required three lab visits, lasting 1-2 hours each. Demographic questionnaires and baseline assessments of cognitive function, academic achievement, trait anxiety, and fitness were performed during visit one. The latter two visits were counterbalanced between experimental and control conditions. The control condition involved sitting quietly for 34 minutes on a treadmill, while the experimental condition involved 34 minutes of aerobic treadmill exercise, 20% below Ventilatory Threshold. Measures of state anxiety, academic achievement, and inhibition were assessed at multiple time points afterward. Results: Reductions in SA were seen in high-trait anxious individuals for both conditions. High-trait anxious individuals had decreased SA immediately post-condition, increased SA during the cognitive tests, and decreased SA at the end of the session. As hypothesized, SA of the high-trait anxious group decreased significantly more from baseline to immediately post-exercise than it did for the low-trait anxious group (as the low-trait group had a very slight increase). Low-trait anxious individuals had less profound fluctuations in SA over time than high-trait anxious individuals. Overall, accuracy was fairly high for all tasks except for the N2-back task. RT was slower for tasks that were more difficult (i.e., incongruent and nontarget trials). Findings revealed generally greater accuracy, faster RT, and greater response variability for high-trait anxious individuals than low-trait anxious individuals on all tasks. However, these responses varied greatly depending on the condition and time of assessment. Exercise did seem to show a trend towards facilitating cognitive performance, but failed to reach significance on many accounts. However, this trend was not seen for N1-back and N2-back RT, because these were slower post-exercise for both groups. Thus, results are very inconclusive. Math SAT scores were higher after exercise than rest, for both groups. A similar trend was seen for Reading SAT scores.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how exercise modality could lead to differing S-anxiety levels and blood-serotonin (5-HT) concentrations in athletic populations at a Division III institution. This was a quasi-experimental study that used a repeated-measures within-factors experimental design, with a side exploratory study. Athletic subjects (N = 22) between the ages of 18 to 35 (M = 23.59, SD = 2.52) volunteered to participate in a session of aerobic and resistance exercise. Baseline blood was drawn, along with postexercise for both modalities. S-anxiety was measured using the S-anxiety subscale of the state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) at familiarization, along with pre-, post-, and 24-hours postexercise for aerobic and resistance exercise. A 2x3 repeatedmeasures ANOVA was conducted for STAI scores and blood-5-HT levels. This ANOVA was performed to compare the two modalities of exercise across three time points. The STAI scores significantly decreased for aerobic and resistance exercise when comparing pre-exercise to post-exercise (p = 0.001) and preexercise to 24-hours post-exercise (p = 0.032). This support was held for both exercise modalities. A one-way repeated-measures ANOVA evaluated change in mean blood-5-HT concentrations across three levels of time of blood draw. No significant differences were found in mean blood-5-HT concentration across the three blood draws. Overall, there was support for aerobic and resistance exercise decreasing S-anxiety for nearly 24 hours.

Book excerpt: Aerobic exercise has benefits on both physical and mental health, including a reduction of stress. However, the differential effects of specific types of aerobic exercise are unclear. We compared the effects of two different types of aerobic exercise (high-intensity interval training; HIIT, and endurance training; ET) with an active control group (relaxation) on mood and cognition following a stressor. Participants were healthy undergraduates (aged 18-25). Physiological tests (e.g., heart rate; HR, and blood pressure; BP) were administered, followed by psychological tests of mood and cognition (e.g., Visual Analogue Scale; VAS, and Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics; ANAM). Participants completed a negative mood-induction/stressor task (e.g. impromptu public speaking), and were then randomly assigned to complete one of three interventions (e.g. HIIT, ET, control). Physiological and psychological tests were then re-administered. We predict that the two forms of aerobic exercise (e.g. HIIT, ET) will have independent effects on mood and cognition, from the control and from each other. Our results will inform whether certain types of aerobic exercise (e.g. HIIT, ET) differentially impact mood and cognition and may promote the development of exercise-based interventions for stress-related emotional disorders (e.g. depression, anxiety, etc.).
