Zu diesem Zweck wurden vier Gruppendiskussionen mit jeweils zwei Gruppen von Jugendlichen und zwei Gruppen von Eltern, die jeweils Internetviel- oder Internetwenignutzer sind, durchgeführt. Festzustellen galt es nicht nur, welchen Gefahren die Jugendlichen im Internet ausgesetzt sind, sondern auch, wie gefährdet sich die Jugendlichen selbst sehen, welche Erfahrungen sie im Netz machen, mit welchen Erfahrungen sie zu den Eltern gehen und wie sie allgemein ihre Internetnutzung empfinden. Durch die Gruppendiskussionen mit den Eltern sollte erkennbar werden, inwiefern sich die Eltern für die Internetnutzung ihrer Kinder interessieren, wie sie selbst zu diesem Medium stehen, welche Eingriffstrategien sie haben und ob es einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Erziehungs- und dem Kommunikationsstil, bezogen auf die jugendliche Internetnutzung, gibt. Ummantelt von den Cultural Studies als theoretischen Zugang und den normativen Positionen des öffentlichen Mediendiskurses als weiterer, theoretischer Anknüpfungspunkt, werden Begriffe wie Kindheitstheorien, das Jugendalter, Entwicklungsaufgaben, Medienkompetenz, Medienpädagogik, Pflichten der Eltern, Erziehungsstile, Mediensozialisierung, Internet und Identitätsbildung, veränderte Mediennutzung, die Internetnutzung in starker Anlehnung an die ARD/ZDF-Onlinestudie 2008 und die jugendgefährdenden Inhalte im Internet erläutert. Der empirische Teil zeigt auf, dass das „wie“ der Internetnutzung bestimmt, ob sich die Nutzung konstruktiv oder subversiv auswirkt. Dieses „wie“ der jugendlichen Internetnutzung ist abhängig von zahlreichen Einflussfaktoren: Ausbildung, Mediensozialisierung durch Eltern und Peer Group, soziokulturelle Faktoren wie ländlicher oder urbaner Wohnort und Einkommen der Eltern, Technologieausstattung im Haushalt, Erziehungsstil und vieles mehr. Insgesamt konnten sechs Internetnutzungstypen bestimmt werden.
