Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Winning Chance The door of the inner office of Varek & Co., Stockbrokers, had opened so quietly that Leo Varek had not heard it, but the click of the typewriters and ticker in the outer office smote his ear more sharply, and he looked up. A young girl had come timidly forward to his desk, and when he lifted his head he met directly her troubled and more than half frightened gaze. "This is Mr. Varek?" she asked, hesitatingly. "I have a note for you from Mr. Calvin Bronson." She reached across to him the paper, but while he took it his sharp eyes did not leave her face. Then he glanced at the envelope. "Bronson," he said in a puzzled way; then whirling round in his chair and pointing to one near him, "Sit down, please." The girl obeyed, eying him anxiously as she sat, one hand tightly holding the other in her lap. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Of a blind white expanse stretching on all sides; sparkling like sun-dust in clear weather; driven, tortured, whirling, when storms, some of them lasting three weeks, are abroad: an apocalyptical expanse, where huge mountains, piercingly aloof on blue, ice-bound days, surge into blood-red splendor at sunset, and where, along the river banks, by dusk and by early morning, iris-tinted mists weave and figure and coil like spirits of the north. And yet, despite all this movement and color, an expanse so pre dominatingly still, so clear, so crystal, that within the great globe of shining glass in which you seem to be caught you hear snow drop from pine trees with the sound of a thousand little wings flying. Her plump, well-rounded figure and rosy cheeks brought forth a vision of a plenteous Iowa farm from which full ripened fruits go forth to market and bright ribbons come back. The night before an impromptu ball took place in the one public room of the hotel. Mildred was the only woman and danced in turn with a score of men. Catharine, neutrally genial, contributed the music. Mildred lingered, rollickingly bent on more fun when Catharine withdrew. Although neither of the girls experienced a magnetic drawing toward the other, yet neither was untouched by the bond of their sex and their youth. Under their red blanket, in the late sleepiness of the previous evening, they agreed to discard all formality in address. They were to be Mildred and Catharine to each other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frank Merriwell's Lads, or the Boys Who Got Another Chance Wendell had forced a careless smile and assured him that he did understand perfectly. Not for the world would he have shown any of the fellows how hard hit he was at the blow which had come so unexpectedly. He would take his medicine without whimpering, if only to disappoint the fellows who would have been far too glad to see him shamed and humiliated. Yes, he' understood - perfectly. He was a fool not to have expected it and been on the lookout for a move of this sort. He might have known that it would come sooner or later. Phillips had never liked him, even at the start, and the feud between himself and Don Shasta, the quarter back, one of the captain's closest friends, rapidly widened the breach. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charity Chance You can hear the humming of the wheel, the shiver Of the leaves when the wind sweeps up the coombe, the startled chatter of the jay as the village boys run through the wood. But to every sense of rural sweetness and every charm of sylvan sound another joy is added. The breath which sets the gentle ash a-whispering to the sturdy oak blows fresh with the fragrance of the brine; and a mile away, a rich gem set in the Open gap between the cliffs, stretches the broad sea, sometimes deep as sapphire and sometimes delicate as pearl. There also are the grey rods and square church-tower Of the little town of Babble mouth, and the slanting masts of one Cardiff collier, as at low water she lies in the square stone harbour upon her side at rest.
