Book excerpt: In 1940, a group of sportsmen of the first rank, members of the Southern Amateur Field Trial Club of Albany, Georgia, undertook to design a field trial format that would provide a more comprehensive and rigorous test of the qualities of high class bird dogs. Dubbed the Òdream trialÓ by William F. Brown at its inaugural offering, the trial, the Quail Championship, was contested in 1941, and 1942 in the quail-rich plantation country in the Albany, Georgia area. Interrupted by World War II, the trial remained as only a bright and shining memory until 1964 when it was resurrected as the Quail Championship Invitational in 1964 at Paducah, Kentucky. Limited to twelve invited contestants, the best of the previous yearÕs major circuit competition, the trial seeks to identify a bird dog with strength, courage, intelligence, and character at the highest level, the Òbest of the best.Ó True to its origin, the trial provides the most comprehensive and equitable test of the major circuit dogs of the field trial sport.

Book excerpt: By the turn of the 21st century, animation production has grown to thousands of hours a year in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Despite this, and unlike American blockbuster productions and the diverse genres of Japanese anime, much animation from the PRC remains relatively unknown. This book is an historical and theoretical study of animation in the PRC. Although the Wan Brothers produced the first feature length animated film in 1941, the industry as we know it today truly began in the 1950s at the Shanghai Animation Film Studio (SAFS), which remained the sole animation studio until the 1980s. Considering animation in China as a convergence of the institutions of education, fine arts, literature, popular culture, and film, the book takes comparative approaches that link SAFS animation to contemporary cultural production including American and Japanese animation, Pop Art, and mass media theory. Through readings of classic films such as Princess Iron Fan, Uproar in Heaven, Princess Peacock, and Nezha Conquers the Dragon King, this study represents a revisionist history of animation in the PRC as a form of "postmodernism with Chinese characteristics." As a theoretical exploration of animation in the People’s Republic of China, this book will appeal greatly to students and scholars of animation, film studies, Chinese studies, cultural studies, political and cultural theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A company of Templar knights, chosen by the Grand Master of the Temple in Jerusalem to deliver a sealed trunk to the Temple in Paris. A group of pilgrims seeking the protection of the Templars to return home as the Muslims prepare to besiege the city. A mysterious treasure that someone will even kill to possess… The Champions of St. Euphemia Boxed Set includes all five medieval romances in this thrilling series by Claire Delacroix. You’ll join the quest to deliver the treasure from Jerusalem to Paris in The Crusader’s Bride. Gaston makes a marriage of convenience with Ysmaine, knowing he needs a son, but soon realizes how little he knows about his new wife. Does he dare to trust her? Can Ysmaine win the heart of her new husband? Follow Wulfe in The Crusader’s Heart, after he encounters the courtesan Christina who refuses to be left behind in Venice. Maybe this alluring woman is exactly what the orphaned knight needs to reawaken his heart and convince him to solve the riddles of his past—can he build a future with Christina? Ride north to England with Bartholomew in The Crusader’s Kiss, in his own quest to reclaim his stolen legacy and avenge his parents: little does he expect to find a woman leading a band of thieves in the forest, much less to pretend she is his wife to undermine the villain. Continue to Scotland with Fergus in The Crusader’s Vow as he returns home after his military service only to find his betrothed has wed another man. A marriage of convenience with his friend and the disguised Saracen Leila seems a fitting compromise, but Leila will not be satisfied until she and Fergus are more than friends and even lovers: she wants to claim his heart for her own. The treasure finds its final sanctuary in Radegunde and Duncan’s tale, The Crusader’s Handfast, a May-December romance between Ysmaine’s maid and Fergus’ man-at-arms, a warrior who believes love has left him behind. Radegunde holds the secrets of her lady, but also proves to have the power to steal Duncan’s heart. The Champions of St. Euphemia Boxed Set includes the complete series of five medieval romances in Claire Delacroix’s sweeping historical series.

Book excerpt: WITH A FOREWORD BY COACH BRUCE ARIANS The extraordinary behind-the-scenes story of how Coach Bruce Arians, Tom Brady, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers came together to deliver one of the most improbable Super Bowl victories in NFL history. The pursuit was so shrouded in secrecy that it was referred to within the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ organization by codename: Operation Shoeless Joe Jackson. Indeed, the prospect of Tom Brady, six-time Super Bowl champion and widely-acknowledged greatest football player ever, joining the Bucs, a historically hapless franchise that hadn’t made the playoffs in more than a decade, seemed about as likely as Jackson emerging out of an Iowa cornfield in the movie Field of Dreams. But come Brady did. At age forty-three, pushing the boundaries of football mortality and without Bill Belichick by his side for the first time in his NFL career, this would be the ultimate test for the ultimate football legacy. Brady’s new coach, Bruce Arians, also had much to prove. One of the great offensive minds of his generation, Arians returned to coaching in 2018, at the age of 65, in search of the one achievement that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career: a Super Bowl championship. Together, like so many aged snowbirds, Brady and Arians had decamped to Florida to make the most of their remaining years. Renowned sports journalist Lars Anderson was granted extraordinary access to the inner workings of the Bucs’ organization. The result is a remarkable work of sports journalism, peppered with wild inside stories and new insights into Brady, Arians, and the Bucs. From the practice facility to the team plane, from the garage where Brady treats his footballs to the huddle on gameday, Anderson captures the rhythms of perhaps the strangest NFL season ever, turned upside down by the COVID-19 pandemic. In his telling, the Bucs’ quest for one glorious season in the sun becomes a riveting sports epic.

Book excerpt: "I like this place and could willingly waste my time in it." - Celia, As You Like It, Act II scene iv Camp Walker is like the idyllic Forest of Arden--a place away, where the characters can focus on essential matters of the heart while they play. They discover who they are and what they need; they are enabled to return to the regular world with problems solved, lessons learned, and skills readied for facing the challenges of life. the Champions is the last part in the five book Scrapbook series. It explores the world through the eyes of a young gay boy. His needs and desires are looked at honestly, with a sense of humor--and without debilitating present day prejudice at the controls. Julian has established himself as a leader and gained the respect that he has sought for so long. He discovers that it is wise to go slowly. Unknown to him, his experienced competition stumbles in haste, and fails; he comes closer to achieving his original objective than either he--or Mark--realize. Surrounded by hundreds of scouts, all working to get ahead, Julian finds a way to shine. His artistic ability grows by leaps. His insight into human nature makes his friendship valuable and helpful to others. Story lines begun earlier are resolved, along with a few late developments. These last three days at camp are even more fun. the busload of boys returns home with much achieved; two weeks of hard work has been full of fun and discovery. Are there no "lived happily thereafter" endings in a gay boy's coming of age story? of course there are. They're just kept secret. Otherwise, the happy part gets destroyed. That's the way it is in real life. Real life stories carry baggage--questions about factual detail tend to upstage and distract the reader. Key story and thematic elements often get lost. If the story contains intimacies, scandalmongers cluster and buzz about like fruit flies, and the important issues get drowned out by the din. These negative forces have been pushed aside for this telling of the story. Julian's Private Scrapbook employs the fiction writer's toolkit in place of documentary literalness. "Charming and humorous, the novel successfully ends the series... told from a gay perspective, this is a wonderful look at boys transitioning between childhood and adulthood." --BlueInk Review Troop Nine Victorious Six first places and the relay! Ten Honor Ribbons Best troop for the fourth year. * Julian makes a new lifelong friend. * Danny's short water polo career ends well; on Friday he is discovered by Tony--instant electricity. * Tom and Nick help Freddy's Shooting Gallery end with a special treat. * There is secret night action as well. The barely trained and poorly equipped men of the Labour Divisions were never meant to fight—but when the German blitzkrieg sliced through the Allied armies they were all that stood in the way of the annihilation of the British Expeditionary Force. Paying with their lives, they bought precious time as the army fell back towards Dunkirk—and long after the last of the little ships reached home, the men of the Labour Divisions fought on. Dunkirk 1940: Whereabouts Unknown uses official reports, diaries, and personal accounts to tell for the first time the story of the chaos, terror, and heroism of the amateur soldiers of 137th Infantry Brigade during the fall of France.

Dinner awaited him, but Mark never arrived. The car hydroplaned at the exit from the turnpike, just minutes from his destination. A deafening silence followed the explosion of the accident. Then an unseen woman's voice spoke to Mark. Turn off the engine. Keep talking. Later, in a hospital forty miles away, surgeons had Mark sign an amputation release form as he pleaded with them to save his arm...
