Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The "ordinary times" Claude Morhange-Begue refers to began when she was not quite eight years old; in April 1944, the SS paused in the French village of Chamberet for some routine business and left with Morhange-Begue's mother. For the rest of the war her mother was interned at Auschwitz. She returned at war's end, her health irreparably impaired but wanting to talk." "Years passed, and Morhange-Begue became a woman and a mother in her turn. Chamberet was written, says Morhange-Begue, in order that certain things not be forgotten. Although her mother felt compelled to speak when she came home, she had been unwilling to record her experiences. Morhange-Begue therefore assumed that task and bore witness on her mother's behalf. What she presents here is a stirring tale of personal emergence." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: This book examines a wide range of works written by and about child survivors and victims of the Holocaust. The writers analyzed range from Anne Frank and Saul Friedlander to Ida Fink and Louis Begley; topics covered include the Kindertransport experience, exile to Siberia, living in hiding, Jewish children masquerading as Christian, and ghetto diaries. Throughout, the argument is made that these texts use such similar techniques and structures that children's-eye views of the Holocaust constitute a discrete literary genre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nostalgia today is seen as essentially benign, a wistful longing for the past. This wasn't always the case, however: from the late seventeenth century through the end of the nineteenth, nostalgia denoted a form of homesickness so extreme that it could sometimes be deadly. What Nostalgia Was unearths that history. Thomas Dodman begins his story in Basel, where a nineteen-year-old medical student invented the new diagnosis, modeled on prevailing notions of melancholy. From there, Dodman traces its spread through the European republic of letters and into Napoleon's armies, as French soldiers far from home were diagnosed and treated for the disease. Nostalgia then gradually transformed from a medical term to a more expansive cultural concept, one that encompassed Romantic notions of the aesthetic pleasure of suffering. But the decisive shift toward its contemporary meaning occurred in the colonies, where Frenchmen worried about racial and cultural mixing came to view moderate homesickness as salutary. An afterword reflects on how the history of nostalgia can help us understand the transformations of the modern world, rounding out a surprising, fascinating tour through the history of a durable idea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beggars, outcasts, urchins, waifs, prostitutes, criminals, convicts, madmen, fallen women, lunatics, degenerates—part reality, part fantasy, these are the grotesque faces that populate the underworld, the dark inverse of our everyday world. Lurking in the mirror that we hold up to our society, they are our counterparts and our doubles, repelling us and yet offering the tantalizing promise of escape. Although these images testify to undeniable social realities, the sordid lower depths make up a symbolic and social imaginary that reflects our fears and anxieties—as well as our desires. In Vice, Crime, and Poverty, Dominique Kalifa traces the untold history of the concept of the underworld and its representations in popular culture. He examines how the myth of the lower depths came into being in nineteenth-century Europe, as biblical figures and Christian traditions were adapted for a world turned upside-down by the era of industrialization, democratization, and mass culture. From the Parisian demimonde to Victorian squalor, from the slums of New York to the sewers of Buenos Aires, Kalifa deciphers the making of an image that has cast an enduring spell on its audience. While the social conditions that created that underworld have changed, Vice, Crime, and Poverty shows that, from social-scientific ideas of the underclass to contemporary cinema and steampunk culture, its shadows continue to haunt us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first multidisciplinary study of its kind, Breaking Crystal examines how members of the generation after the Holocaust in Israel and the United States confront through their own imaginations a traumatic event they have not directly experienced. Among the questions this groundbreaking work raises are: Whose memory is it? What will the collective memory of the Holocaust be in the twenty-first century, after the last survivors have given testimony? How in the aftermath of the Holocaust do we read and write literature and history? How is the memory inscribed in film and art? Is the appropriation of the Holocaust to political agendas a desecration of the six million Jews? What will the children of survivors pass on to the next generation?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines French women's writing and representations of the Occupation in post-'68 France. The author looks at the work of 'The Women Resisters', those women who were adult resisters during the war, and 'The Daughters of the Occupation', those who were born during or after the war period. The main contention of the study is that the older generation's nascent awareness of how gender informs political activism is reworked into explicitly feminist representations of wartime France by younger women writers.
