Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Liszt by : Kenneth Hamilton
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Liszt written by Kenneth Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion provides an up-to-date view of the music of Franz Liszt, its contemporary context and performance practice, written by some of the leading specialists in the field of nineteenth-century music studies. Although a core of Liszt's piano music has always maintained a firm hold on the repertoire, his output was so vast, influential and multi-faceted that scholarship too has taken some time to assimilate his achievement. This book offers students and music lovers some of the latest views in an accessible form. Katharine Ellis, Alexander Rehding and James Deaville present the biographical and intellectual aspects of Liszt's legacy, Kenneth Hamilton, James Baker and Anna Celenza give a detailed account of Liszt's piano music - including approaches to performance - Monika Hennemann discusses Liszt's Lieder, and Reeves Shulstad and Dolores Pesce survey his orchestral and choral music.
Book Synopsis The Composer-pianists by : Robert Rimm
Download or read book The Composer-pianists written by Robert Rimm and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The recordings made by Marc-Andre Hamelin in recent years have cast new light on an extraordinary group of composers - Alkan, Busoni, Feinberg, Godowsky, Medtner, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Sorabji - whose works heralded a Golden Age of virtuosic writing for the piano." "The Eight, as author Robert Rimm has termed these composer-pianists, have much in common, traits shared in our own age with Marc-Andre Hamelin, their foremost interpreter. For all their evident differences of age, nationality, and philosophy, they each created music of unprecedented ingenuity - often complex and of immense scale - that stretched the limits of the piano's capabilities. And all were genuine virtuosos with the technical resources to play these demanding works in public." "The volume includes rare photographs and concludes with an extensive bibliography, listings of the complete solo piano works of The Eight, and discographies of their solo piano recordings. In exploring the art of those who knew their instrument both as composers and as pianists, this book serves, in the words of pianist Stephen Hough, "both as a fascinating, exhaustive study of the riches of the past and as a stimulating inspiration for the future.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Carmen Fantasie Brilliante by : Francois Borne
Download or read book Carmen Fantasie Brilliante written by Francois Borne and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carmen Fantasie Brillante" was composed by François Borne (1840-1920). It is based on themes from the opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, composed in 1875, just 3 months prior to his death. In about 10 to 12 minutes, Borne runs through many of the great themes from this, one of the most popular operas of all time. The fantasy (written in 1900 and originally orchestrated that same year by Raymond Meylan) begins with the music of Carmen's first entrance in the opera, goes to the "Fate" theme, the Cigarette Girls' Song from Act I and the Habañera. From that point, the music builds up in excitement for the Gypsy Dance. Just as the listeners assume that the piece is ready to close, Borne trumps all that has come before with a triumphant statement of the famous Toreador Song. I played a band arrangement of this beautiful piece when I was temporarily with the Air Force Band of the West, San Antonio, Texas in late 1997, and I decided to duplicate that feat...it took me 14 years, but I finally did it. --Marc Oliver
Download or read book Ferruccio Busoni written by Della Couling and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Busoni's radical ideas about music was, is, and could be drew fire from his more conservative contemporaries. His thoughts on musical notation, opera, and the division of the scale were well ahead of his time, but, in many cases, are common currency today. Busoni went into voluntary exile in Switzerland during World War I, unwilling to take sides, and only recently has the veil been gradually lifted from his work and theories. Ferruccio Busoni: "A Musical Ishmael" shines a revealing light on Busoni's life, concepts, and profound influence on contemporary musical aesthetics and practice."--BOOK JACKET.
