Book excerpt: In view of the double vocative that characterizes the relation of Creator to creature, this book offers critiques of modern and postmodern philosophy for the ways in which they have separated philosophy, theology, and spirituality. This collection examines the complicated relationship of God to Being and the meaning of Revelation, as well as highlighting the context and the role of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. Discussions include the Catholic Principle and its relevance in contemporary times, and Christian epic visionaries such as Dante, Milton, Blake, and Joyce, providing scholars a forum to debate their theological identity and its meaning for future studies. This volume contributes a unique engagement from many perspectives with the Catholic intellectual tradition in its philosophical, theological, spiritual, literary, and artistic dimensions.

Book excerpt: "The Problem Of The Gods" is a historical fiction novel that depicts the evil acts of men in those days when Nigeria was not colonized by civilization. Some parts of the Ibibio/Efik villages were worshiping idols, using the power of their forefathers to perform wonders and evil manipulations. Akarika was a witch doctor, who in those days was an evil man. Many innocent souls' blood was stained in his hand. It also revolves around the barbaric Nigerian culture that affects Ibibio widows. It focuses on the pains and rejections they must endure while grieving their husbands. This can be seen in the life of Inemesit after she lost her husband Effiong, who was one of the best hunters of the time. The exercise totally dehumanized her. Then the story talked about some of the culture and lifestyle of the Ibibio people in the southern part of Nigeria African countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Christians faced two hermeneutical challenges of fundamental importance. Firstly, that of interpreting the Old Testament and secondly, how to cope with the Greek legacy embedded in Homer. The latter is not explicitly raised in the New Testament but since the art of interpreting any text presupposes reading skills, conveyed through liberal studies, the Homeric challenge must have been of immense importance. Homer was the gateway to education, to the skills of reading and writing. These skills were necessary for the nascent Church, knowledge of Homer's writings was a sign of Greekness, of 'at-home-ness' in the society. Therefore education was suffused with the mythology, immorality and idolatry of Greek writings, presenting an obvious challenge to a developing Christian outlook. In this new work Karl Olav Sandnes examines how Christians responded to this challenge. Sandnes asserts that this response varied from complete rejection of Homer and all pagan literature - considering it the work of the Devil - to critical involvement with this literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problem of religion, ethics, and public policy in a global technological civilization. It attempts to do what narrative ethicists have said cannot be done—to construct a cross-cultural ethic of human dignity, human rights, and human liberation which respects the diversity of narrative traditions. It seeks to do this without succumbing to either ethical relativism or ethical absolutism. The author confronts directly the dominant narrative of our technological civilization: the Janus-faced myths of “Apocalypse or Utopia.” Through this myth, we view technology ambivalently, as both the object of our dread and the source of our hope. The myth thus renders us ethically impotent: the very strength of our literal utopian euphoria sends us careening toward some literal apocalyptic “final solution.” The demonic narrative that dominated Auschwitz (“killing in order to heal”) is part of this Janus-faced technological mythos that emerged out of Hiroshima. And it is this mythic narrative which underlies and structures much of public policy in our nuclear age. This book proposes a coalition of members of holy communities and secular groups, organized to prevent any future eruptions of the demonic. Its goal is to construct a bridge not only over the abyss between religions, East and West, but also between religious and secular ethics.

Book excerpt: The Problem of God explores answers to the most difficult questions raised against Christianity. A skeptic who became a Christian and then a pastor, author Mark Clark grew up in an atheistic home. After his father's death, he began a skeptical search for truth through the fields of science, philosophy, and history, eventually finding answers in the last place he expected: Christianity. In a winsome, persuasive, and humble voice, The Problem of God responds to the top ten interrogations people bring against God, and Christianity, including: Does God even exist in the first place? What do we do with Christianity's violent history? Is Jesus just another myth? Can the Bible be trusted? Why should we believe in Hell anymore today? Each chapter answers the specific challenge using a mix of theology, philosophy, and science. Filled with compelling stories and anecdotes, The Problem of God presents an organized and easy-to-understand range of apologetics, focused on both convincing the skeptic and informing the Christian. The book concluding with Christianity's most audacious assertion: how should we respond to Jesus' claim that he is God and the only way to salvation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a literary study of the oracles against Babylon in Jeremiah chapters 50-51. They form the climax of the foreign oracle collection in the book of Jeremiah. Included are a survey of early scholarship on these chapters, a discussion of genres and motifs, verbal components, and a succinct survey of the historical context. However, the major emphasis is directed to the dynamic of these oracles as a literary creation with a message. That message is directed to Judah and Israel, who are urged to flee a doomed city with its idolatrous civilization, and to return to their homeland, to Jerusalem, to enter a permanent covenant with YHWH the God of their fathers. Throughout, the literature is discussed in its natural contexts: within the oracle collection in Jeremiah, in comparison with the Isaian oracles against Babylon, and within the canonical book of Jeremiah, demonstrating the climactic position of these oracles.
