Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Philo of Alexandria and Greek Myth by :
Download or read book Philo of Alexandria and Greek Myth written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philo of Alexandria and Greek Myth: Narratives, Allegories, and Arguments, a fresh and more complete image of Philo of Alexandria as a careful reader, interpreter, and critic of Greek literature is offered. Greek mythology plays a significant role in Philo of Alexandria’s exegetical oeuvre. Philo explicitly adopts or subtly evokes narratives, episodes and figures from Greek mythology as symbols whose didactic function we need to unravel, exactly as the hidden teaching of Moses’ narration has to be revealed by interpreters of Bible. By analyzing specific mythologems and narrative cycles, the contributions to this volume pave the way to a better understanding of Philo’s different attitudes towards literary and philosophical mythology.

Book Synopsis Porphyry in Syriac by : Yury Arzhanov
Download or read book Porphyry in Syriac written by Yury Arzhanov and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2021, a previously unknown treatise by Porphyry of Tyre, which has been preserved in a Syriac translation, was made available to historians of philosophy: Porphyry, On Principles and Matter (De Gruyter, 2021). This text not only enlarges our knowledge of the legacy of the most prominent disciple of Plotinus but also serves as an important witness to Platonist discussions of first principles and of Plato’s concept of prime matter in the Timaeus. The aim of the present volume of collected studies is two-fold. On the one hand, it brings up an update to the state of the art of our knowledge of Porphyry’s philosophy and of his role in the transmission of the earlier philosophical materials, especially those of the Middle Platonic works. On the other hand, it focuses on the questions of the reception of Porphyry’s legacy, both by Greek and Latin Platonists (with special interest in Calcidius) and by Christian Oriental authors (with particular focus on the Syriac tradition). The primary audience of the book will be scholars and graduate students in ancient and late ancient Greek philosophy, Orientalists and scholars interested in the Christian reception of Greek philosophy, in the studies of the Christian Orient, as well as in Greek, Latin, and Syriac philology.

Book Synopsis Divination and Theurgy in Neoplatonism by : Crystal Addey
Download or read book Divination and Theurgy in Neoplatonism written by Crystal Addey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did ancient philosophers consult oracles, write about them, and consider them to be an important part of philosophical thought and practice? This book explores the extensive links between oracles and philosophy in Late Antiquity, particularly focusing on the roles of oracles and other forms of divination in third and fourth century CE Neoplatonism. Examining some of the most significant debates between pagan philosophers and Christian intellectuals on the nature of oracles as a central yet contested element of religious tradition, Addey focuses particularly on Porphyry's Philosophy from Oracles and Iamblichus' De Mysteriis - two works which deal extensively with oracles and other forms of divination. This book argues for the significance of divination within Neoplatonism and offers a substantial reassessment of oracles and philosophical works and their relationship to one another. With a broad interdisciplinary approach, encompassing Classics, Ancient Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies and Ancient History, Addey draws on recent anthropological and religious studies research which has challenged and re-evaluated the relationship between rationality and ritual.

Book Synopsis Theurgy in Late Antiquity by : Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler
Download or read book Theurgy in Late Antiquity written by Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theurgy is commonly taken to denote a complex of rites which are based on the so-called Chaldean Oracles, a collection of oracles in hexameters, which were probably composed during the late 2nd century AD. These rituals are mostly known through Neoplatonic sources, who engage in a passionate debate about their relevance to the salvation of the soul and thus to the philosopher's ultimate goal. Ilinca Tanaseanu-Döbler examines the development of the discourse on theurgy, attempting to reconstruct what was understood as theurgic ritual in the late antique sources. Withstanding the temptation to impose a unity on the disparate sources which span several centuries, she thus goes beyond the picture of a coherent, extra-philosophical tradition drawn by the Neoplatonists to sketch the variations in the rituals subsumed under 'theurgy' and their function, and shows how every author constructs his own 'theurgy'. This perspective leads to consider theurgy as an example of an 'artificial' ritual tradition, composed from already existing elements to create something claimed as sui generis. Theurgy offers the great opportunity to look at such a tradition from its beginning up to its end and to analyse the mechanisms of inventing and reinventing such a ritual tradition in process.

This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Chaldean Oracles were originally collected by Thomas Taylor and published as: "Collection of the Chaldean Oracles," in The Monthly Magazine and British Register, vol. III., 1797. They were later republished in Taylor's "Collectanea; or Collections consisting of Miscellanies inserted in the European and Monthly Magazines," 1806, and again with the addition of "Part IV," as: "Collection of the Chaldean Oracles," in the Classical Journal, December, 1817; March & June, 1818. These have now been reprinted, with adjustments in formatting and the addition of an Appendix containing the Oracles given in a new sequence. In the present volume, the formatting of the original has been changed in order to render the text more easily readable. The footnotes found in the originals have been collected and placed in order at the end of the Oracles, allowing for a more easily readable layout. Besides this change, and minor changes in formatting style, the text has not been altered, except in cases where certain Greek characters were in need of modernization. "These remains of Chaldean theology are not only venerable for their antiquity, but inestimably valuable for the unequalled sublimity of the doctrines they contain. They will, doubtless, too, be held in the highest estimation by every liberal mind, when it is considered that some of them are the sources whence the sublime conceptions of Plato flowed ... It is clear that the following oracles, which are collected from the writings of the Platonists, are of Chaldean origin [and] it is likewise evident, that some of these oracles may, with great confidence, be ascribed to the Chaldean Zoroaster. Short notes are added, by way of comment, on the most obscure of these oracles, and the exposition of Psellus is prefixed as containing the best account of the Chaldaic dogmas that can, at present, be obtained."-Thomas Taylor, from the Introduction.
Book Synopsis Die Chaldaeischen Orakel by : Helmut Seng
Download or read book Die Chaldaeischen Orakel written by Helmut Seng and published by Universitatsverlag Winter. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Lewys 1956 in Kairo erschienenes Buch 'Chaldaean Oracles and Theurgy.
