Book excerpt: ROBOTS 1:1 explores the space-themed toys in the R. F. Robot Collection held by the Vitra Design Museum. Largely produced in Japan between 1937 and 1973, these figures of robots (and the occasional astronaut) have been carefully researched and compiled over the years by Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra and founder of the Vitra Design Museum, who describes them as »small kinetic sculptures of great originality. Ever since the term's first appearance in Czech writer Karel Čapek's science fiction play »R. U. R.« in 1921, robots have both served and taken over the work of humans, creating human dependency and at times a shift in the power dynamics of a society. ROBOTS 1:1 is unique in that it shows the toys and their original packaging (when available) in a scale of 1:1, with the largest robot determining the size of the book. In this way, it conveys something of the uncanny nature of the robots and their ambivalence, while the vivid illustrations on the boxes give an idea of the futuristic fantasies developed over the period. ROBOTS 1:1 is limited to an edition of 1,000 copies, numbered and signed by Rolf Fehlbaum. A USB stick with 34 short films demonstrating a selection of robots in action is integrated into the spine of the book, alongside a poster featuring 80 robots in chronological order of their release.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the 2000s, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec are considered to be amongst the best representative of French design's dynamism and creativity. Working together since 1998, the two brothers worked for numerous manufacturers (Vitra, Cappelini, Kvadrat, etc.), while maintaining an experimental limited edition activity with Galerie kreo. Among their iconic pieces are the Disintegrated Kitchen (1997), the Closed Bed (1998), the Spring Chair (2000), and, more recently, the Vegetal Chair (2009). They also worked with Issey Miyake, Camper, and Kvadrat for the creation of architectural projects. Published on the occasion of the release of their new project, Lianes, Roches & Conques, this book offers a new insight into their creative process, gathering together drawings and sketches, as well as studio, workshop, and gallery photographs. A foreword by Alessandro Mendini, designer and Editor-in-Chief of Domus, and a text by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec enlight their working process, explaining the path from the idea to the exhibition, and the links between industrial fabrication, design, and signature. As Mendini puts it in this book, 'the studies carried out by the Bouroullec brothers to integrate their design work with the shapes, elements, and ways of nature are becoming increasingly evident'.

We think that good design is an integral part of real life. And that real life has been conspicuous by its absence in most design and architecture magazines.

Book excerpt: Project Vitra began in 1957 in Birsfelden near Basel with the production of the furniture of Charles and Ray Eames and George Nelson. Today Vitra is active and known throughout the world for its products and cultural initiatives, which are evidenced by the Vitra Design Museum, its collections, and the architecture of the firmâs own corporate campus. Vitra sees itself first and foremost as a project driven by the desire and determination to design the world. This ambition is also the driving force behind «Project Vitra», which offers an inside look at the firmâs collaboration with architects and designers, including Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Tibor Kalman, Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, SANAA, Jasper Morrison, Zaha Hadid, Hella Jongerius, Maarten Van Severen, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Jean Prouvé, Mario Bellini, Antonio Citterio, Alberto Meda, Verner Panton, Herzog and de Meuron, and many others. The copiously illustrated chapters with contributions by Alex Coles, Rolf Fehlbaum, Luis Fernández-Galiano, Deyan Sudjic, and Alexander von Vegesack tell stories about the places, people, and products connected with Vitra. This overview is rounded off by a history of the firm and a comprehensive glossary.

Book excerpt: This book is the culmination of an advertising campaign by the exclusive design company Vitra, which had the idea of photographing famous personalities sitting on Vitra chairs. The resulting photographs collected in Sittings are remarkable in their portrayal of word-famous personalities from the fine and performing arts, commenting on the link between style and status. Vitra hired the Swiss photographer Christian Coigny to shoot the campaign. What began as an attempt to amuse the public became a celebrated campaign that lasted for a decade. This book is a testament to Coigny's tact, insight, and creative skill, each photograph capturing a unique moment and revealing something new about its subject.

Book excerpt: The oeuvre of the American designer couple Charles and Ray Eames is extraordinary in its range and diversity. Their groundbreaking furniture designs, which have remained current throughout the decades since their creation, play a central role in the Eames' oeuvre. As the sole authorized manufacturer of Eames designs in Europe and the Middle East for the past 50 years, Vitra is commemorating Charles Eames' 100th birthday with the publication of The Furniture of Charles & Ray Eames. Grouped into categories based on materials such as plywood, plastic, wire and aluminum, all of the Eames designs produced by Vitra are presented in detail. Reproductions of vintage photographs and documents accompany explanatory texts that provide in-depth information on the historical background and distinctive structural features of the furniture designs. Contemporary photographs illustrate the aesthetic quality of these objects. The active preservation of Charles and Ray Eames' legacy is the subject of a dialogue between Rolf Fehlbaum, the Chairman of Vitra, and Charles' grandson Eames Demetrios, the present director of the Eames Office.
