Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allen "Skip" Roth and his son have been carving wood sculptures professionally for over twenty-five years. In addition to the impressive final sculptures, their art is performance-based. They were the featured artists in the May 1, 1995 issue of People magazine. The article declared them the "best chainsaw artists in the world." Earlier in his career, Skip's rise in the art world was interrupted when his son, at twelve years of age, was molested by a pedophile. Confrontations with the pedophile ultimately led to Skip being charged with murder. He was unjustly convicted and spent three years in prison before winning an appeal to his conviction. Chainsaw's Justice is the narrative of his unique true-life experiences.

Book Synopsis My Heart Is a Chainsaw by : Stephen Graham Jones
Download or read book My Heart Is a Chainsaw written by Stephen Graham Jones and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel In her quickly gentrifying rural lake town Jade sees recent events only her encyclopedic knowledge of horror films could have prepared her for in this latest chilling novel that “will give you nightmares. The good kind, of course” (BuzzFeed) from the Jordan Peele of horror literature, Stephen Graham Jones. “Some girls just don’t know how to die…” Shirley Jackson meets Friday the 13th in My Heart Is a Chainsaw, written by the New York Times bestselling author of The Only Good Indians Stephen Graham Jones, called “a literary master” by National Book Award winner Tananarive Due and “one of our most talented living writers” by Tommy Orange. Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life. Jade Daniels is an angry, half-Indian outcast with an abusive father, an absent mother, and an entire town that wants nothing to do with her. She lives in her own world, a world in which protection comes from an unusual source: horror movies…especially the ones where a masked killer seeks revenge on a world that wronged them. And Jade narrates the quirky history of Proofrock as if it is one of those movies. But when blood actually starts to spill into the waters of Indian Lake, she pulls us into her dizzying, encyclopedic mind of blood and masked murderers, and predicts exactly how the plot will unfold. Yet, even as Jade drags us into her dark fever dream, a surprising and intimate portrait emerges…a portrait of the scared and traumatized little girl beneath the Jason Voorhees mask: angry, yes, but also a girl who easily cries, fiercely loves, and desperately wants a home. A girl whose feelings are too big for her body. My Heart Is a Chainsaw is her story, her homage to horror and revenge and triumph.
Book Synopsis Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids by : Alison Macor
Download or read book Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids written by Alison Macor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1990s, Austin achieved “overnight” success and celebrity as a vital place for independent filmmaking. Directors Richard Linklater and Robert Rodriguez proved that locally made films with regional themes such as Slacker and El Mariachi could capture a national audience. Their success helped transform Austin’s homegrown film community into a professional film industry staffed with talented, experienced filmmakers and equipped with state-of-the art-production facilities. Today, Austin struggles to balance the growth and expansion of its film community with an ongoing commitment to nurture the next generation of independent filmmakers. Chainsaws, Slackers, and Spy Kids chronicles the evolution of this struggle by re-creating Austin’s colorful movie history. Based on revealing interviews with Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, Mike Judge, Quentin Tarantino, Matthew McConaughey, George Lucas, and more than one hundred other players in the local and national film industries, Alison Macor explores how Austin has become a proving ground for contemporary independent cinema. She begins in the early 1970s with Tobe Hooper’s horror classic, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and follows the development of the Austin film scene through 2001 with the production and release of Rodriguez’s $100-million blockbuster, Spy Kids. Each chapter explores the behind-the-scenes story of a specific movie, such as Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Judge’s Office Space, against the backdrop of Austin’s ever-expanding film community.

Book Synopsis The Palace Complex by : Michal Murawski
Download or read book The Palace Complex written by Michal Murawski and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the history and significance of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland. The Palace of Culture and Science is a massive Stalinist skyscraper that was “gifted” to Warsaw by the Soviet Union in 1955. Framing the Palace’s visual, symbolic, and functional prominence in the everyday life of the Polish capital as a sort of obsession, locals joke that their city suffers from a “Palace of Culture complex.” Despite attempts to privatize it, the Palace remains municipally owned, and continues to play host to a variety of public institutions and services. The Parade Square, which surrounds the building, has resisted attempts to convert it into a money-making commercial center. Author Michal Murawski traces the skyscraper’s powerful impact on twenty-first century Warsaw; on its architectural and urban landscape; on its political, ideological, and cultural lives; and on the bodies and minds of its inhabitants. The Palace Complex explores the many factors that allow Warsaw’s Palace to endure as a still-socialist building in a post-socialist city. “The most brilliant book on a building in many years, making a case for Warsaw’s once-loathed Palace of Culture and Science as the most enduring and successful legacy of Polish state socialism.” —Owen Hatherley, The New Statesman’s“Books of the Year” list (UK) “An ambitious anthropological biography of Poland’s tallest and most infamous building, the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. . . . It is a truly fascinating story that challenges a tenacious stereotype, and Murawski tells it brilliantly, judiciously layering literatures from multiple disciplines, his own ethnographic work, and personal anecdotes.” —Patryk Babiracki, H-Net History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMMON PLEAS, A Tale of Whoa!" is a legal thriller novel colored with humor set in rural North Carolina in the mid-1980's. If John Grisham, Harper Lee, and Larry the Cable Guy were penned for a weekend in a cabin with nothing but a typewriter and an ample supply of bourbon, wine, and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, something like this might result. Read as the Good, the Bad, and the Butt Ugly collide in this riotous journey to a rural North Carolina courtroom, ending in a verdict of local justice. Veteran trial attorney Bob Lee Pender battles his courtroom adversary, the facts, and even his own client through the winding journey of a rowdy, fast-paced, suspenseful high-profile murder trial made possible by the collective contributions of a sordid and colorful cast only a local courthouse could produce. This is an intense and informative tale of the mechanics and realities of courtroom justice, whether Southern or elsewhere--a tale of "Whoa!"

Book Synopsis Creative Compounding in English by : Réka Benczes
Download or read book Creative Compounding in English written by Réka Benczes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphorical and metonymical compounds novel and lexicalised ones alike are remarkably abundant in language. Yet how can we be sure that when using an expression such as land fishing in order to speak about metal detecting, the referent will be immediately understood even if the hearer had not been previously familiar with the compound? Accordingly, this book sets out to explore whether the semantics of metaphorical and metonymical nounnoun combinations can be systematically analysed within a theoretical framework, where systematicity pertains to regularities in both the cognitive processes and the products of these processes, that is, the compounds themselves. Backed up by recent psycholinguistic evidence, the book convincingly demonstrates that such compounds are not semantically opaque as it has been formerly claimed: they can in fact be analysed and accounted for within a cognitive linguistic framework, by the combined application of metaphor, metonymy, blending, profile determinacy and schema theory; and represent the creative and associative word formation processes that we regularly apply in everyday language.
