This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes certification of the Mw of SRM 2888, a polystyrene (PS), by light scattering. As supplemental numbers, the Mn by NMR end group analysis and the Mw, Mn and the MMD by MALDI-TOF-MS are also given. SRM 2888 was prepared commercially for NIST Polymers Division for use as a standard for Size Exclusion Chromatography and as a narrow distribution polymer standard with well-defined classical molecular mass moments for comparative studies by MALDI-MS. This material was specially prepared and characterized for well-defined end groups. After packaging of this material for future distribution, the Mw was determined by light scattering and Mn determined by solution NMR. End groups were further studied by FTIR and MALDI-TOF-MS. The MMD was studied by MALDI-TOF-MS. The bottle-to-bottle homogeneity of this Standard Reference Material (SRM) was examined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC).

This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The certification of a polystyrene standard reference material, SRM 2888, is described. The Mw of SRM 2888 was determined by light scattering to be 7.19 x 10+3 g/mol with a sample standard deviation of 0.14 x 10+3 g/mol. A combined expanded uncertainty for this light scattering Mw determination, including systematic and random uncertainties, was estimated to be 0.57 x 10+3 g/mol. Mn was determined by NMR analysis of the end groups and found to be 7.05 x 10+3 g/mol with an estimated expanded uncertainty of 0.55 x 10+3 g/mol. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) were used to analyze end groups on the polymer. The polystyrene was analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS for the number (Mn) and mass (Mw) average of the molecular mass distribution (MMD) as well as the MMD. The bottle-to-bottle variation of the SRM was checked by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and found to be negligible. This polymer was also used in an interlaboratory comparison of MALDI-TOF-MS of synthetic polymers. The interlaboratory comparison and its results are described. Agreement between the MMD moments obtained by light scattering and NMR and the moments of the MMD obtained by MALDI in the interlaboratory comparison is found to be good overall. However, all the experimental values obtained by MALDITOF- MS fell below the classical values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dehydrobenzene and Cycloalkynes deals with the problems associated with the production and reactions of dehydrobenzene and of the related fields of dehydroheterocycles and cycloalkynes. This book also describes the various synthetic applications of dehydrobenzene and provides a list of reactions in which dehydrobenzene occurs as an intermediary. The text explains the generation of dehydrobenzene by cleavage of cyclic systems, by photolytic methods, and by free radical reactions. Nucleophilic and electrophilic monodentate attacks on dehydrobenzene, as well as, bidentate additions to dehydrobenzene yielding cycloadducts. The book also notes that dehydrobenzene is not only a transition state but can be an intermediate of characteristic selectivity and lifetime. The reactions of dehydrobenzene in the gaseous phase affirm that the existence of dehydrobenzene is not restricted to the presence of a solvation shell. The researcher can then study the molecular structure of dehydrobenzene when its existence has been fully established. The text also extends the principle that the dehydroaromatic intermediates can be obtained by abstracting two adjacent hydrogen atoms from an aromatic substrate different from the 1- and 2- positions to arrive at a 1,3- and 1,4-dehydrobenzene. Researchers and scientists whose works are associated with organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular physics or physical chemistry will find this book valuable.

This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flavonoids are ubiquitously present in plant-based foods and natural health products. The molecule of flavonoids is characterized by a 15-carbon skeleton of C6–C3–C6, with the different structural configuration of subclasses. The major subclasses of flavonoids with health-promotional properties are the flavanols or catechins (e.g., epigallocatechin 3-gallate from green tea), the flavones (e.g., apigenin from celery), the flavonols (e.g., quercetin glycosides from apples, berries, and onion), the flavanones (e.g., naringenin from citrus), the anthocyanins (e.g., cyanidin-3-O-glucoside from berries), and the isoflavones (e.g., genistein from soya beans). Scientific evidence has strongly shown that regular intake of dietary flavonoids in efficacious amounts reduces the risk of oxidative stress- and chronic inflammation-mediated pathogenesis of human diseases such as cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and neurological disorders. The physiological benefits of dietary flavonoids have been demonstrated to be due to multiple mechanisms of action, including regulating redox homeostasis, epigenetic regulations, activation of survival genes and signaling pathways, regulation of mitochondrial function and bioenergetics, and modulation of inflammation response. The role of flavonoids on gut microbiota and the impact of microbial metabolites of flavonoids on optimal health has begun to unravel. The complex physiological modulations of flavonoid molecules are due to their structural diversity. However, some flavonoids are not absorbed well, and their bioavailability could be enhanced through structural modifications and applications of nanotechnology, such as encapsulation. This Special Issue consists of four review articles on flavonoids and 15 original research articles, which cover the latest findings on the role of dietary flavonoids and their derivatives in disease prevention and treatment.
