Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty different health professions are currently regulated in law on a UK-wide basis by nine regulatory bodies and regulation of pharmacy technicians will also become mandatory from July 2011. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 initiated a series of reforms to the governance of the health professions regulatory bodies, delivering a fundamental change in the governance of the regulatory bodies, ending professional control over their governing councils and strengthening the contribution of lay members. Delivering safe and effective care will continue to be the driving principle behind professional regulation. Further, in the context of "any willing provider" being able to provide services to the NHS in England, the role of professional regulation, providing a set of standards which apply to all aspects of a health or social care professional's work will become all the more important in future, in most sectors of care. However, the regulatory framework is also complex, expensive and requires continuous Government intervention to keep it up to date. This Command Paper therefore sets out proposals for how the system for regulating healthcare workers across the UK and social workers in England should be reformed to sustain and develop the high professional standards of those practitioners and to continue to assure the safety of those using services and the rest of the public. The reforms aim to deliver greater operational freedom to the regulators, balanced by strengthened accountability to both Parliament and the public.

Book excerpt: Jesuits established a large number of astronomical, geophysical and meteorological observatories during the 17th and 18th centuries and again during the 19th and 20th centuries throughout the world. The history of these observatories has never been published in a complete form. Many early European astronomical observatories were established in Jesuit colleges. During the 17th and 18th centuries Jesuits were the first western scientists to enter into contact with China and India. It was through them that western astronomy was first introduced in these countries. They made early astronomical observations in India and China and they directed for 150 years the Imperial Observatory of Beijing. In the 19th and 20th centuries a new set of observatories were established. Besides astronomy these now included meteorology and geophysics. Jesuits established some of the earliest observatories in Africa, South America and the Far East. Jesuit observatories constitute an often forgotten chapter of the history of these sciences.

Book excerpt: Second Edition with two new stories Vula Bevalile: Letters from a Young Doctor is a collection of vignettes written over seven years by Australian doctor Maithri Goonetilleke, who has been contributing his time voluntarily in Swaziland--a country devastated by extreme poverty and the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Through the stories, the reader is taken on an incredible journey across a landscape of extreme adversity and medical and economic hardship. But it is the final, overwhelming sense of humanity that is most striking and empowering. The ultimate outcome for the reader is a profound understanding of a people with enormous resilience, pride, humility, and courage. This book calls on us to think again, to ask ourselves what we are doing in our own lives and why. - Paul A. Komesaroff (Professor of Medicine and Director, Centre for Ethics in Medicine and Society, Monash University, and Executive Director of Global Reconciliation, Australia) These beautiful letters express a burning desire on the part of a physician to reach out and live from a place of divine love. - Wayne Dyer (internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development) In beautifully limpid and pared-back prose, Maithri Goonetilleke distils his experiences in Swaziland .... Words such as "uplifting" and "profound" cannot begin to capture the quiet potency of the stories he tells about the people he works with and treats. - The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald About the AuthorMaithri Goonetilleke is a medical doctor and executive director of Possible Dreams International. He studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and has worked throughout Australia as both a general medical and emergency registrar --running sole-doctor emergency departments in rural areas, and working in Indigenous communities and in correctional institutions. In Swaziland, he provides medical relief to those living with HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, and extreme poverty, as well as providing sustainable development solutions such as access to clean water, agriculture, income generation, and housing.

Download or read book Pierre Bonnard written by Pierre Bonnard and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2009 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The vibrant late paintings of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) are considered by many to be among his finest achievements. Working in a small converted bedroom of his villa in the south of France, Bonnard suffused his late canvases with radiant Mediterranean light and dazzling color. Although his subjects were close at hand-usually everyday scenes taken from his immediate surroundings, such as the dining room table being set for breakfast, or a jug of flowers perched on the mantelpiece - Bonnard rarely painted from life. Instead, he preferred to make pencil sketches in small diaries and then rely on these, along with his memory, once in the studio." "This volume, which accompanies the first exhibition to focus on the interior and related still-life imagery from the last decades of Bonnard's long career, presents more than seventy-five paintings, drawings, and works on paper, many of them rarely seen in public and in some cases, little known. Although Bonnard's legacy may be removed from the succession of trends that today we consider the foundation of modernism, his contribution to French art in the early decades of the twentieth century is far more profound than history has generally acknowledged. In their insightful essays and catalogue entries the authors bring fresh critical perspectives to the ongoing reappraisal of Bonnard's reputation and to his place within the narrative of twentieth-century art."--Jacket
