Book excerpt: Cultures around the world have recently become more isolated and aggressive in defending their socio-cultural domain. However, throughout history, many civilizations have established extensive and long-term cultural ties with diverse cultural groups. Despite ideological schisms that emerged between civilizations from time to time, our hunger for cultural encounters and coexistence shines through. Cultural Encounters and Tolerance Through Analyses of Social and Artistic Evidences: From History to the Present sheds light on different histories and presents evidence of cultural encounters, coexistence, and acculturation. This publication presents cultural assets as more mobile than ideologies across boundaries as it can be more often seen in the cultural arena. Covering topics such as the effects of colonialism, geometrical forms, and architectural heritage, it serves as an essential resource for architects, art historians, cultural historians, students and professors of higher education, sociologists, anthropologists, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenir Folder of Lincoln's Tomb, Springfield, Illinois When the news of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, reached Springfield the following day, the people gathered at the State Capitol and started plans for the construction of a memorial and tomb. The Lincoln National Memorial Association met a month later and selected Oak Ridge cemetery as the site and launched a drive to raise On September 1, 1869, 37 models from 31 American artists had been received by the Association, and ten days later a design sent from Italy by Larkin G. Mead, Jr., of Brattleboro, Vermont, was selected. Meads design included groups of infantry, cavalry, artillery and navy, as well as a statue of Lincoln and the coat of arms of the United States. The foundation was laid in 1869, and Mead's statue of Lincoln was un veiled in conjunction with the dedication ceremony on October 15, 1874. Two years later, ten men tried to 'steal the body of Lincoln from its sarcophagus to hold it for ransom, but were apprehended by Secret Service agents and sentenced to prison. Eight years after its final completion, in 1895, the State took control of the tomb and the work of the National Monument Association was ended. During a complete reconstruction of thet0mb in 1899-1901, the casket containing the body of Lincoln was moved to a new burial place ten feet below the surface of the earth and six feet from the north wall. Book Synopsis Legacy of Disunion by : Susan Mary Grant
Download or read book Legacy of Disunion written by Susan Mary Grant and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-03-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conviction that the American Civil War left a massive legacy to the country has generally been much clearer than the definition of what that legacy is. Did the war, as Ulysses S. Grant believed, bequeath power, intelligence, and sectional harmony to America, or did it, as many have argued since, sow racial and regional bitterness that has blighted the nation since 1865? What, exactly, was the legacy of disunion? This collection explores that question from a variety of angles, showcasing the work of twelve scholars from the United States and the United Kingdom. The essays ponder the role of history, myth, and media in sustaining the memory of the war and its racial implications in the South; Abraham Lincoln’s legacy; and the war’s consequences in less studied areas, such as civil-military relations, constitutional and legal history, and America’s ascent on the international stage. By juxtaposing American and non-American interpretations, this stimulating volume sheds light on aspects of the war’s legacy that from a purely American viewpoint are sometimes too close for comfort. Perhaps the greatest legacy of the Civil War is its ongoing debate and continuing fascination worldwide.
