Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for the new technician or engineer entering the ceramics industry as well as for the ""old hand"" who needs an update on some aspect of ceramics processing, this resource provides practical laboratory-oriented answers to such typical processing problems as particle segregation, agglomeration, contamination, pressure gradients, adherence to tooling, and temperature gradients during drying and firing. The author examines the difficulties of practical testing and processing in the ceramic laboratory, such as vast differences in scale and equipment, and shows how to evaluate results taking such variables into account. Once the laboratory work is satisfactorily completed, the rest of the book explores serious issues involved in transferring technology from the lab bench to the plant floor and then to the customer. The author gives advice on dealing with real-life problems such as allocating human and capital resources and overcoming customer wariness of being first to try new procedures and processes. Each section contains practical, hands-on suggestions on performing and sometimes avoiding certain tasks, bringing to the reader key information that is at best sparsely available in the industry. As the author states, ""Laboratory skills are gained by hands-on experience. The intent of this book is to accelerate the process.""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic fuel cells, commonly known as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), have been under development for a broad range of electric power generation applications. The most attractive feature of the SOFC is its clean and efficient production of electricity from a variety of fuels. The SOFC has the potential to be manufactured and operated cost-effectively. The widening interest in this technology, thus, arises from the continuing need to develop cleaner and more efficient means of converting energy sources into useful forms. This topical book provides a comprehensive treatise on solid oxide fuel cells and succeeds successfully in filling the gap in the market for a reference book in this field. Directed towards scientists, engineers, and technical managers working with SOFCs as well as ceramic devices based on conducting materials, and in related fields, the book will also be invaluable as a textbook for science and engineering courses.

Book excerpt: Written to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in 1996, this text is designed to explain the basic science involved in ceramic manufacture, with reference to Chinese ceramics, as they are the most technologically advanced. Both the exhibition and the book were inspired by many requests for basic information about ceramic technology that did not require experience of making pots or a degree in chemistry to understand. The book thus assumes no previous knowledge of ceramic technology or science in general and uses terms which can be defined and explained in a manner accessible to the non-specialist.

Book excerpt: Pottery is the most ubiquitous find in most historical archaeological excavations and serves as the basis for much research in the discipline. But it is not only its frequency that makes it a prime dataset for such research, it is also that pottery embeds many dimensions of the human experience, ranging from the purely technical to the eminently symbolic. The aim of this book is to provide a cutting-edge theoretical and methodological framework, as well as a practical guide, for archaeologists, students and researchers to study ceramic assemblages. As opposed to the conventional typological approach, which focuses on vessel shape and assumed function with the main goal of establishing a chronological sequence, the proposed framework is based on the technological approach. Such an approach utilizes the concept of chaîne opératoire, which is geared to an anthropological interpretation of archaeological objects. The author offers a sound theoretical background accompanied by an original research strategy whose presentation is at the heart of this book. This research strategy is presented in successive chapters that are geared to explain not only how to study archaeological assemblages, but also why the proposed methods are essential for achieving ambitious interpretive goals. In the heated debate on the equation stating that “pots equal people”, which is a rather fuzzy reference to assumed relationships between (mostly) ethnic groups and pottery, technology enables us to propose with conviction the equation “pots equal potters”. In this way, a well-founded history of potters is able to achieve a much better cultural and anthropological understanding of ancient societies.

Triggered by material research, design computation and digital fabrication methods, the innovations in ceramic technology are enabling expanded applications for ceramics as a multi-functional, performative material system. Ceramic material systems comprise the full ecosystem from material extraction and processing to the assembly of construction elements and their eventual reuse and recycling. This book establishes the state of the art of this quickly emerging field, with a particular interest in presenting the knowledge needed for developing project-specific solutions that often involve custom ceramic elements. The authors provide a rigorous background of the materials and associated technologies as well as inspiration from the very best contemporary buildings using ceramic systems, along with an overview of emerging ceramic technologies and research. The main section of the book is supplemented with a descriptive and critically commented listing of the most interesting and innovative ceramic products on the market today, ranging from interior tile products to complex active façade systems and roof products.

It won a publisher’s award for art (American Publishers’ Association, Scholarly and Technical, Honorable Mention, 1986). The copyright is held by David Kingery’s son, William D. Kingery, Jr., who about 11 years ago signed over to the American Ceramic Society the rights to publish a second edition of the book. This second edition is divided into four parts. In the introductory section, it states : “The appearance of a ceramic is determined by its internal structure, which is in turn determined by the technology of its manufacture. Revolutionary new methods of study and analysis have advanced out understanding of ceramics. This book applies these new methods, connecting visual impact, internal structure, and technology for a deeper appreciation of ceramic masterpieces.” Each chapter outlines the transformative art and structure of a ceramic material by providing a general outline of history, artistic value, antecedent technologies, manufacture of the particular dated example, analysis of macrostructure, then microstructure, then composition, then firing, variability and its relation to appearance, and finally significance of technology and its contribution to art and culture. In the ceramic technology section, the sequences and variability of processing, exemplified in the case studies, is inventoried with emphasis on structure and transformation.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades archaeologists have used pottery to reconstruct the lifeways of ancient populations. It has become increasingly evident, however, that to make inferences about prehistoric economic, social, and political activities through the patterning of ceramic variation, it is necessary to determine the location where the vessels were made. Through detailed analysis of manufacturing technology and design styles as well as the use of modern analytical techniques such as neutron activation analysis, Zede–o here demonstrates a broadly applicable methodology for identifying local and nonlocal ceramics.
