Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is for comparative linguists and Celticists who are keen to study Breton but may be too daunted to undertake such a venture by the wide variety of orthographical conventions which exist within the language. It discusses points of orthographical contention so that their correlation to the spoken varieties of Breton can be judged by the reader.
Book Synopsis Breton in Contemporary Media by : Merryn Davies-Deacon
Download or read book Breton in Contemporary Media written by Merryn Davies-Deacon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph investigates questions around new speakers of Breton, their identities, attitudes, and motivations, and how these intersect with linguistic practices. Investigating post-traditional contexts, it uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches to probe stereotypes around the language and speakers encountered in these settings. Focusing on the lexis in a sample of Breton gathered from radio, online, and print media sources, and on interviews carried out with professional users of Breton, this work illustrates the wide range of backgrounds and practices within the contemporary Breton language community and shows how speakers use Breton to position themselves within this diverse setting.

Book Synopsis Complex Adpositions in European Languages by : Benjamin Fagard
Download or read book Complex Adpositions in European Languages written by Benjamin Fagard and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much attention has been devoted to simple nominal relators, especially prepositions and case markers, complex nominal relators have not yet been the focus of a systematic and cross-linguistic study. The chapters of this volume provide not only a working definition of such constructions, but also a description of complex adpositions and other complex nominal relators in a variety of European languages, both Indo-European and non-Indo-European, including some languages for which this phenomenon had received little attention, such as Breton and Albanian. Building on synchronic and diachronic corpus-based investigations, the authors show commonalities and specificities of these linguistic items across languages, trying to explain why and how they emerged. The research presented in this volume confirms the wide-spread use of complex adpositions in Europe, and the data reviewed in the final discussion suggests it might be the same in other parts of the world, as well. This book thus offers not only detailed descriptions of complex nominal relators in fifteen languages, but also indications of what to look for in other languages, and how to distinguish between a syntactically free sequence and a genuine complex nominal relator.

Book Synopsis Beyond devolution and decentralisation by : Alistair Cole
Download or read book Beyond devolution and decentralisation written by Alistair Cole and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond devolution and decentralisation compares the politics, policies and polity-building dynamics of devolution in Wales and decentralisation in the French region of Brittany. Empirically, the book draws conclusions from in-depth fieldwork within two regions and reports the findings of a comparative public opinion survey. Theoretically, it contributes towards our understanding of the comparative study of regions. Perhaps most impressive is how the case studies generally are based on, but also cast light back, to the nuanced theoretical framework on regional capacity established at the outset. The book uncovers the dynamics of devolution in Wales and decentralisation in Brittany through extensive face to face interviews: over 200 interviews were carried out from 2001 to 2004, a formative stage in the development of the devolved institutions in Wales and a period of expectation in Brittany as well. The book will be of interest to the professional research community and to practitioners in Britain, France and beyond, as well as to students on comparative politics, British/Welsh politics, French politics, European studies and public policy courses.

Book excerpt: Part history, part memoir, part statistical analysis, this book tells the remarkable and largely forgotten story of how the baseball hotbed of Canada's northeastern Maritime provinces evolved into "NCAA North" during the 1940s and 1950s. A summer training ground for players from leading U.S. college programs, the region attracted talented players seeking higher salaries than they could get in the American minor league system. Major league organizations came to scout blue-chip prospects. In this competitive environment, only the best were able to crack the rosters of town teams in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Maine. A Quality of Competition Index for various northeast leagues provides major league equivalencies for selected players.
