Book excerpt: Excerpt from Onondaga's Centennial, Vol. 1: Gleanings of a Century In systematizing the order under which these volumes should be compiled and written, it was deemed wise to in the main substitute chronology for too close classification, in the belief that the reader would prefer to follow the line of transpiring events and preserve the continuity of the interesting story. The towns, too, have, as a rule, been placed according to the order of their establishment rather than alphabetically, thus maintaining the chronological plan. The present population of the county is very largely composed of the descendants of pioneers and early settlers; hence it has been deemed advisable to insert as many of the names of such ancestors as could be obtained. To that end records have been patiently searched with quite satisfactory results. Much which might have appeared in the chapters of general county history in Volume I was reserved for what was deemed to be a more appropriate place in the respective towns, as fairly belonging to them. He started and edited a newspaper in London; he wrote for the London daily press and other first-class English periodi cals he published two or three little books which our most fastidious critics praised; he founded the London Library Company, became its first secretary, and just when it began to flourish, he died - only thirty years Of age - his naturally weak and sickness-shattered frame completely worn out by work. He left a clearly beloved wife and young family almost unprovided for, in spite Of all his efi'orts to secure their comfort. It is for their sake that these Last Gleanings from his desk have been garnered. How he loved his home, and those who made it home, may be guessed from the following extract from a series Of 'etchings' he wrote for his newspaper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gleanings in Holy Fields The spiritual harvests of the Holy Land have been rich beyond comparison, and the labourers have been numerous beyond count. But what astonishes one most in that wonderful land is what remains in it over and above, that has not been gathered into the gamer. The gleanings of it are more abundant than the Whole harvests of other lands. Every reaper seems, like the young men of Boaz in the fields of Bethlehem, to let fall some of the handfuls on purpose for the benefit of his successor. I have been gleaning even among the sheaves, and I trust that for what I have stored up in this form I shall not be reproached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Gleanings: A Select Miscellany The following pages embrace a variety of short, interesting Anecdotes, Sketches, &c., which will be found, it is believed, to be adapted to fostering an appetite for solid and profitable reading. Much of the matter here presented has been gleaned from the columns of 7725 Traci Repaying/f and lays no claim to originality or to literary merit. It has not been the aim of the editor in making these selections to enforce distinctive or sectarian views, they being gathered originally from a variety of sources, and from authors differing in their religious profession, who have been allowed to express them selves in their own language and way. It is believed, however, that the real value of the moral or religious lessons of instruc tion inculcated, will be found to far outweigh any imperfections of style or objectionable modes of expression, which may be noticed to exist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dartmouth Book of Remembrance: Pen and Camera Sketches of Hanover and the College Before the Centennial and After Citizens upon Hanover Forty Years Ago. The room was crowded and the interest great. The lectures were afterwards printed in pamphlet form from shorthand notes and are a mine or perhaps better a potato patch of homely items from which every citizen might dig nourishment. But the pamphlet is out of print; college matters were not the primary object of the lectures; dif ferent people remember different things; some gleanings remain. And if excuse is needed for trying to take advantage of these facts, the sad knowledge of the passing of many of multiple memories and picturesque vocabularies without leaving any record is an incentive to lesser ones to do what they can or to try to do what they can't. And when I became a man, I still followed the road of sin, Which led me to the devil's hand; Thus I did my manhood begin. When a child about two or three, My mother did me begin To teach me my A, B, C About He who died to save from sin. But not being a mental scholar, And loving to follow in sinful mirth The devil captured my mind as his fallow, As sin was sown in my nature from my birth. Thus I lived in years of sinful pleasure Until I was about thirty-eight; Drinking in the gall without measure, Until a very few years of late. Now when I am fifty years of age, Not possessing one earthly dollar, I come the truths of the Gospel to engage, Not spending one hour as a mental scholar. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early years of fur trading to today's Silicon Valley empires, America has proved to be an extraordinarily fertile land for the creation of enormous fortunes. Each generation has produced one or two phenomenally successful leaders, often in new industries that caught contemporaries by surprise, and each of these new fortunes reconfirmed the power of fanatically single-minded visionaries. John Jacob Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt were the first American moguls; John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan were kingpins of the Gilded Age; David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Kroc, and Sam Walton were masters of mass culture. Today Oprah Winfrey, Andy Grove, and Bill Gates are giants of the Information Age. America has again and again been the land of dizzying mountains of wealth. Here, in a wittily told and deeply insightful history, is a complete set of portraits of America's greatest generators of wealth. Only such a collective study allows us to appreciate what makes the great entrepreneurs really tick. As H. W. Brands shows, these men and women are driven, they are focused, they deeply identify with the businesses they create, and they possess the charisma necessary to persuade other talented people to join them. They do it partly for the money, but mostly for the thrill of creation. The stories told here -- including how Nike got its start as a business-school project for Phil Knight; how Robert Woodruff almost refused to take control of Coca-Cola to spite his father; how Thomas Watson saved himself from prison by rescuing Dayton, Ohio, from a flood; how Jay Gould nearly cornered the gold market; how H. L. Hunt went from gambling at cards to gambling with oil leases -- make for a narrative that is always lively and revealing and often astonishing. An observer in 1850, studying John Jacob Astor, would not have predicted the rise of Henry Ford and the auto industry. Nor would a student of Ford in 1950 have anticipated the takeoff of direct marketing that made Mary Kay Ash a trusted guide for millions of American women. Full of surprising insights, written with H. W. Brands's trademark flair, the stories in Masters of Enterprise are must reading for all students of American business history.
