Book excerpt: The city of Lake Elsinore is home to Southern California's only natural lake. Since the 1800s, the lake has provided respite and recreation, beginning as a campsite for early pioneer travelers and later evolving into a world-class playground for the rich and famous. In 1951, Lake Elsinore's popularity suffered when the lake dried up, causing many of the recreational activities to move away. Today the lake is maintained at an ideal 1,240 feet above sea level and filled with weekend watercraft and fishermen, while families picnic nearby and the city enjoys a major growth in population and businesses.

Download or read book When Tish Happens written by Frank Davey and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?In the early 1960s, a group of students at UBC started a magazine called Tish. The name was purposefully an anagram of shit, in order to demonstrate their youthful and iconoclastic attitude. In many ways, Tish, and its editors, became the clear break from older Canadian poets and styles. At the heart of the magazine, and the movement, was Frank Davey. And it is Davey who has written this definitive history. Davey has organized the material as a memoir, starting from his own early days in Abbotsford, B.C., and gradually introducing the other poets, including George Bowering, Daphne Marlatt, and Fred Wah, despite the fact that Davey doesn't meet them until they all arrive at UBC. Much of the theory of the Tish poets derives from the Black Mountain poets, an American movement that incorporated the writings of Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan who suggested the name itself. The Black Mountain poets believed that writing should be locally based and should grow out of t

Book Synopsis Theodore Roosevelt's Ghost by : Michael Patrick Cullinane
Download or read book Theodore Roosevelt's Ghost written by Michael Patrick Cullinane and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after his death, Theodore Roosevelt remains one of the most recognizable figures in U.S. history, with depictions of the president ranging from the brave commander of the Rough Riders to a trailblazing progressive politician and early environmentalist to little more than a caricature of grinning teeth hiding behind a mustache and pince-nez. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost follows the continuing shifts and changes in this president’s reputation since his unexpected passing in 1919. In the most comprehensive examination of Roosevelt’s legacy, Michael Patrick Cullinane explores the frequent refashioning of this American icon in popular memory. The immediate aftermath of Roosevelt’s death created a groundswell of mourning and goodwill that ensured his place among the great Americans of his generation, a stature bolstered by the charitable and political work of his surviving family. When Franklin Roosevelt ascended to the presidency, he worked to situate himself as the natural heir of Theodore Roosevelt, reshaping his distant cousin’s legacy to reflect New Deal values of progressivism, intervention, and patriotism. Others retroactively adapted Roosevelt’s actions and political record to fit the discourse of social movements from anticommunism to civil rights, with varying degrees of success. Richard Nixon’s frequent invocation led to a decline in Roosevelt’s popularity and a corresponding revival effort by scholars endeavoring to give an accurate, nuanced picture of the 26th president. This wide-ranging study reveals how successive generations shaped the public memory of Roosevelt through their depictions of him in memorials, political invocations, art, architecture, historical scholarship, literature, and popular culture. Cullinane emphasizes the historical contexts of public memory, exploring the means by which different communities worked to construct specific representations of Roosevelt, often adapting his legacy to suit the changing needs of the present. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost provides a compelling perspective on the last century of U.S. history as seen through the myriad interpretations of one of its most famous and indefatigable icons.

Book Synopsis Westchester Township by : Westchester Public Library
Download or read book Westchester Township written by Westchester Public Library and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of the struggle to save the uniquely beautiful Indiana sand dunes, Westchester Township lies on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, 50 miles southeast of Chicago. It extends from the Indiana Dunes that line the shore and continues south, to the rolling hills of the Valparaiso Moraine. The township is home to four incorporated towns, the Burns Harbor Plant of Bethlehem Steel, and two large expanses of public land--the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Indiana Dunes State Park. Westchester Township tells the story of the people who settled the township and those who contributed to its growth and transformation into a vigorous and diverse community. The photographs date from the early 1850s through the early 1960s, focusing primarily on the period from the 1880s to the 1940s. The majority of the images were drawn from the files of the Chesterton Tribune, which has served Westchester Township and the surrounding area since 1884. Additional pictures were kindly loaned by a variety of local citizens and institutions.
