Book excerpt: In this book, the reader is transported to many locations in Papua New Guinea while savoring the author’s true stories and identifying with his experiences. From West Sepik to Madang, from the mountain heights of the Highlands to the Bismarck Sea-washed shores, the reader has the opportunity to resonate with the cultural context of the Asia-Pacific region. These people groups, nearly forgotten by the western world, live in the characteristic “endless cycle” style of the past. In their animistic worldview, the people of this area hold the belief that nothing changes. According to indigenous culture, the human spirit continuously transforms into other forms of life after it ceases to exist as a human. So, ancestors still exist and will always exist in the form of spirits in the universe that surrounds us. For that reason, time does not exist, so history is not worth recording: what is now was also in the past, and what will come tomorrow is a rebirth of the past and of those from the past in another form. How then does a young country (established in 1975) reconcile the modern age with indigenous traditions? How does an animistic society embrace new Christian teachings in the midst of naturalistic-evolutionistic times? Centaurus and the Southern Cross attempts to bring to the forefront a rediscovery of the reasons why there is value in using every available technology to advance the Good News here at the ends of the earth. Although this book’s stories are not arranged chronologically, they share a common theme of indigenous customs, and the way they impact societal behaviors in this region. This is what gives the book its continuity. I would not have been able to present certain aspects of the way the Word of God works in a people rooted and still tied to animistic practices if I had not chosen to examine these issues first. I found that the best way to transport the reader into this world of 839 tribes was by describing particular revealing events first. This book introduces the goals which make it worth investing in these people through any means possible and with every talent God has given us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets out a simple month-by-month program to reveal all of the night sky's biggest and most beautiful secrets in just one year – and with only a few hours of stargazing each month By investing just an hour a week and $50 in binoculars, it’s possible to learn a few simple techniques and quickly gain a real insight into the night sky's ever-changing patterns – and what they tell us about Earth, the seasons and ourselves. Searching more for a learned appreciation of nature and our exact place within the cosmos than academic scientific knowledge, science and travel writer Jamie Carter takes the reader on a 12 month tour of the night sky's incredible annual rhythms that say so much about Earth. During the journey he learns about the celestial mechanics at work in the skies above that are – to the beginner – almost beyond belief. As well as the vital constellations and clusters, and the weird and wonderful nebulas, he searches out “dark sky destinations” across the globe that help increase knowledge and give a new perspective on familiar night sky sights. On the journey he witnesses a solar eclipse and grapples with star-charts, binoculars, smartphone apps, telescopes, spots satellites and attempts basic astro-photography. By year's end, the reader will be able to glance at the night sky from anywhere on the planet and tell what direction he or she is facing, what time it is, where all the planets are and even where the Galactic Center Point is.

Book excerpt: Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, award-winning astronomy writer and popularizer, has been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Tales is the first modern guide to combine all the fascinating myths in one book, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the leading star atlases: Johann Bode’s Uranographia of 1801 and John Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis of 1729. This classic book, now in a revised and expanded edition, presents additional information on the constellations with new and enchanting illustrations. For anyone interested in the stars and classical mythology, for anyone who is an armchair astronomer, this is the perfect gift.

Book excerpt: A reconstruction of the Chinese sky of two thousand years ago, based on analysis of the first star catalogue in China and other sources. Presented in six well-sized star maps for 100 BC, it is especially important for the history of astronomy. The Han sky, with five times more constellations than Ptolemy knew, reflects diverse human activities. The way in which constellations were grouped discloses a systematic cosmology, uniting universe and the state. The work of the three Han schools is comparable to Ptolemy's Almagest. With three detailed Appendices on the constellations of the three schools, well illustrated to demonstrate the relation between sky and human society, this book is valuable not only for astronomy historians and sinologists, but in general for scholars interested in the ancient cultures of Asia.
