This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of reliable and comprehensive data on the magnitude, composition and distribution of a country’s population is essential in order for governments to provide services, administer effectively and guide a country’s development. The primary source of basic demographic statistics is frequently a population census, which provides hugely important data sets for policy makers, practitioners and researchers working in a wide range of different socio-demographic contexts. The Routledge Handbook of Census Resources, Methods and Applications provides a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the collection, processing, quality assessment and delivery of the different data products that constitute the results of the population censuses conducted across the United Kingdom in 2011. It provides those interested in using census data with an introduction to the collection, processing and quality assessment of the 2011 Census, together with guidance on the various types of data resources that are available and how they can be accessed. It demonstrates how new methods and technologies, such as interactive infographics and web-based mapping, are now being used to visualise census data in new and exciting ways. Perhaps most importantly, it presents a collection of applications of census data in different social and health science research contexts that reveal key messages about the characteristics of the UK population and the ways in which society is changing. The operation of the 2011 Census and the use of its results are set in the context of census-taking around the world and its historical development in the UK over the last 200 years. The results of the UK 2011 Census are a unique and reliable source of detailed information that are immensely important for users from a wide range of public and private sector organisations, as well as those working in Population Studies, Human Geography, Migration Studies and the Social Sciences more generally.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Regional Committee warns that preparations for the 2011 Census risk a repeat of the difficulties of the 2001 Census, where the population of several London boroughs was seriously undercounted. The acknowledged undercounting of London's population in the 2001 Census continues to have an effect on the funding provided to London's boroughs for the services they are expected to provide for the capital's population. The report welcomes improvements which have been made to arrangements for the conduct of the 2011 Census and acknowledges that substantial lessons have been learned from the 2001 exercise. However, the MPs raise concerns that these preparations will not be enough to boost the number of census forms delivered, completed and collected in the capital to acceptable response levels. The Committee callS on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to address potential problems with recruitment of skilled enumerators with the local knowledge required to ensure the successful delivery and collection of as many Census forms as possible. The MPs also recommend that ONS discusses with London boroughs the methods it proposes to use to calculate final Census figures and estimate missing returns, in order to share expertise on the particular population profiles in each borough.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population-based survey experiments have become an invaluable tool for social scientists struggling to generalize laboratory-based results, and for survey researchers besieged by uncertainties about causality. Thanks to technological advances in recent years, experiments can now be administered to random samples of the population to which a theory applies. Yet until now, there was no self-contained resource for social scientists seeking a concise and accessible overview of this methodology, its strengths and weaknesses, and the unique challenges it poses for implementation and analysis. Drawing on examples from across the social sciences, this book covers everything you need to know to plan, implement, and analyze the results of population-based survey experiments. But it is more than just a "how to" manual. This lively book challenges conventional wisdom about internal and external validity, showing why strong causal claims need not come at the expense of external validity, and how it is now possible to execute experiments remotely using large-scale population samples. Designed for social scientists across the disciplines, Population-Based Survey Experiments provides the first complete introduction to this methodology. Offers the most comprehensive treatment of the subject Features a wealth of examples and practical advice Reexamines issues of internal and external validity Can be used in conjunction with downloadable data from ExperimentCentral.org for design and analysis exercises in the classroom

Book excerpt: 'While there already exists a crowded body of publications addressing the effect of an aging population on the economy, this monograph is most outstanding in presenting a global, in-depth analysis of the implications thereby generated for 23 developed and developing countries. . . Scholars, researchers, and practitioners everywhere will benefit immensely from this comprehensive work.' – H.I. Liebling, Choice 'Ron Lee and Andrew Mason's Population Aging and the Generational Economy is a demographic and economic tour-de-force. Their collaborative, intercontinental. . . study of aging, consumption, labor supply, saving, and private and public transfers is the place to go to understand global aging and its myriad and significant economic challenges and opportunities.' – Laurence Kotlikoff, Boston University, US 'The culmination of. . . work by Lee, Mason, and their collaborators from around the world to extend Samuelson's framework to accommodate realistic demography, empirical measurement of age-specific earnings, consumption, tax payments, and benefit receipts, the studies. . . demonstrate the power of this integrated economic-demographic framework to advance our understanding of critical public policy challenges faced by countries at different stages of demographic transition and population aging.' – Robert Willis, University of Michigan, US 'Lee and Mason have done scholars and practitioners a magnificent service by undertaking this comprehensive, compelling, and supremely innovative examination of the economic consequences of changes in population age structure. The book is a bona fide crystal ball. It will be a MUST READ for the next decade!' – David Bloom, Harvard School of Public Health, US 'Population Aging and the Generational Economy provides an encompassing account of what we know about population aging and the impact that this process will have on our economies. It does not confine itself to the advanced industrial countries, where aging has already been largely studied, but adopts a truly global perspective. I am sure it will become a key reference for researchers, students and those involved in policy-making in areas that are affected by population aging.' – Giuliano Bonoli, Swiss Graduate School of Public Administration (IDHEAP), Switzerland Over coming decades, changes in population age structure will have profound implications for the macroeconomy, influencing economic growth, generational equity, human capital, saving and investment, and the sustainability of public and private transfer systems. How the future unfolds will depend on key actors in the generational economy: governments, families, financial institutions, and others. This path-breaking book provides a comprehensive analysis of the macroeconomic effects of changes in population age structure across the globe. The result of a substantial seven-year research project involving over 50 economists and demographers from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the United States, the book draws on a new and comprehensive conceptual framework – National Transfer Accounts – to quantify the economic lifecycle and economic flows across generations. It presents comprehensive estimates of both public and private economic flows between generations, and emphasizes the global nature of changes in population age structure that are affecting rich and poor countries alike. This unique and informative book will prove an invaluable reference tool for a wide-ranging audience encompassing students, researchers, and academics in fields such as demography, aging, public finance, economic development, macroeconomics, gerontology, and national income accounting; for policy-makers and advisers focusing on areas of the public sector such as education, health, pensions, other social security programs, tax policy, and public debt; and for policy analysts at international agencies such as the World Bank, the IMF, and the UN.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where jobs are plentiful and the cost of living is high, countries are seeing waves of migration from city centres to peri-urban areas where the cost of living may be lower but basic services and jobs may be in short supply. This report makes the case that with planning and the right investments in people now - to empower them to make choices that are not only good for themselves but for our global commons - our world of 7 billion can have thriving, sustainable cities, productive labour forces that can fuel economic growth, youth populations that contribute to the well-being of economies and societies, and a generation of older people who are healthy and actively engaged in the social and economic affairs of their communities. In many parts of the developing world, where population growth is outpacing economic growth, the need for reproductive health services, especially family planning, remains great. The attainment of a stable population is a sine qua non for accelerated, planned economic growth and development.Governments that are serious about eradicating poverty should also be serious about providing the services, supplies, information that women need to exercise their reproductive rights. This record population size can be viewed in many ways as a success for humanity: People are living longer, healthier lives. But not everyone has benefited from this achievement or the higher quality of life that this implies. Great disparities exist between and within countries. Disparities in rights and opportunities also exist between men and women, girls and boys. Charting a path now to development that promotes equality, rather than exacerbates or reinforces inequalities, is more important than ever. Everyone has a stake in the future of humanity. Every individual, every government, every business, is more interconnected and interdependent than ever, and the choices made today will impact on the future world.
