Book excerpt: This book offers an analysis of the content and background of Theophile Brachet de la Milletiere's irenic proposals to the competing religious parties in France (1634-1645), as well as an overall picture of religious France in that period, since both Roman Catholics (the Gallican clergy, the Jesuits and their rivals, the Jansenists) and Calvinists (the ministers of Charenton, the scholars of Saumur and orthodox theologians like Rivet) combatted this alleged 'third religion'.
Book Synopsis Edmond Richer and the Renewal of Conciliarism in the 17th century by : Philippe Denis
Download or read book Edmond Richer and the Renewal of Conciliarism in the 17th century written by Philippe Denis and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1611 Edmond Richer, the syndic of the Faculty of Theology of Paris, published a short but incisive defence of the conciliarist doctrine under the title De ecclesiastica et politica potestate. He claimed that this doctrine had been almost uninterruptedly followed by the University of the Paris since the time of the Council of Constance in the early 15th century. Within two years, at least six Latin, French or bilingual editions of the treatise saw the light as well as an English and a Dutch translation. The book was condemned at a meeting of the French bishops in March 1612 and its author was dismissed from his position of syndic of the Faculty of Theology a few months later. He withdrew from public life but remained influential. He continued to write in defence of the conciliarist doctrine and the so-called liberties of the Gallican Church until his death in 1631. He vehemently opposed Cardinal Bellarmine's doctrine of the indirect power of popes in temporal matters but never subscribed to the doctrine of the divine power of kings. Most of his books were published posthumously. Philippe Denis retraces Edmond Richer's career and examines his ecclesiological and political thinking. Without taking all the syndic's opinions at face value, this volume commits itself to taking seriously Richer's declared intention, which was to vindicate the teaching of the School of Paris and that of Jean Gerson in particular. Philippe Denis places the heated, sometimes aggressive, debates between Richer and his adversaries in the context of a double progression: that of the doctrine of an absolute monarchy, a form of government which had been developing since the troubles of the League, and that of the Ultramontane ideas, often disputed but supported with growing vigour, in France and elsewhere, in the context of the reception of the Council of Trent. Philippe Denis presents the English translation of his book originally published in French (Editions du Cerf in Paris, 2014).

Book Synopsis Vincent de Paul, the Lazarist Mission, and French Catholic Reform by : Alison Forrestal
Download or read book Vincent de Paul, the Lazarist Mission, and French Catholic Reform written by Alison Forrestal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vincent de Paul, the Lazarist Mission, and French Catholic Reform offers a major re-assessment of the thought and activities of the most famous figure of the seventeenth-century French Catholic Reformation, Vincent de Paul. Confronting traditional explanations for de Paul's prominence in the dévot reform movement that emerged in the wake of the Wars of Religion, the volume explores how he turned a personal vocational desire to evangelize the rural poor of France into a congregation of secular missionaries, known as the Congregation of the Mission or the Lazarists, with three inter-related strands of pastoral responsibility: the delivery of missions, the formation and training of clergy, and the promotion of confraternal welfare. Alison Forrestal further demonstrates that the structure, ethos, and works that de Paul devised for the Congregation placed it at the heart of a significant enterprise of reform that involved a broad set of associates in efforts to transform the character of devotional belief and practice within the church. The central questions of the volume therefore concern de Paul's efforts to create, characterize, and articulate a distinctive and influential vision for missionary life and work, both for himself and for the Lazarist Congregation, and Forrestal argues that his prominence and achievements depended on his remarkable ability to exploit the potential for association and collaboration within the dévot environment of seventeenth-century France in enterprising and systematic ways. This is the first study to assess de Paul's activities against the wider backdrop of religious reform and Bourbon rule, and to reconstruct the combination of ideas, practices, resources, and relationships that determined his ability to pursue his ambitions. A work of forensic detail and complex narrative, Vincent de Paul, the Lazarist Mission, and French Catholic Reform is the product of years of research in ecclesiastical and state archives. It offers a wholly fresh perspective on the challenges and opportunities entailed in the promotion of religious reform and renewal in seventeenth-century France.

Book Synopsis The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter-Reformation between 1558 and 1640 by : A.F. Allison
Download or read book The Contemporary Printed Literature of the English Counter-Reformation between 1558 and 1640 written by A.F. Allison and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1956 Allison and Rogers published A Catalogue of Catholic Books in English Printed Abroad Secretly in England, 1558-1640. Known simply as A & R, it is the standard listing of the clandestine vernacular output of English Catholics during that period. Now, after more than thirty years work, Allison and Rogers have produced a substantially updated, comprehensive catalogue to be published in two interlocking volumes. This first volume describes books which are linked to specific English Catholic writers, including translators and editors, or to various English bodies, and nearly two hundred other publications which concern English Catholic affairs. It is a major reference tool for historians and bibliographers. 'The one thing that has characterised the two editors in everything they have done is their careful and painstaking scholarship, and that is evident throughout this work...this monument will stand for a long time and serve students of the history, religion, and literature of early modern Europe for many years to come' The Catholic Historical Review 'a remarkable achievement...If there is such a thing as an absolute bibliography, then this is it' TLS A.F. Allison had special responsibility for early printed books at the British Museum Library, while D.M. Rogers was head of Special Collections in the Department of Printed Books at the Bodleian Library. Both have written widely and together founded, in 1951, the periodical 'Biographical Studies', later re-named 'Recausant History'.
