Book Synopsis Chamber Music by : Lucy Miller Murray
Download or read book Chamber Music written by Lucy Miller Murray and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Chamber Music: An Extensive Guide for Listeners,Lucy Miller Murray transforms her decades of program notes for some of the world’s most distinguished artists and presenters into the go-to guide for the chamber music novice and enthusiast. Offering practical information on the broad array of chamber music works from the Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods—and an artful selection from the Baroque period of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works—Chamber Music: An Extensive Guide for Listeners is both the perfect reference resource and chamber music primer for listeners. Covering over 500 works, Murray surveys in clear and simple language the historical and musical impact of some 130 composers—20 of them living. Notably, Chamber Music includes the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Bartok, and Shostakovich, as well as 35 piano trios of Haydn. It also provides critical information and assessments of works by composers not nearly so well known, both past and present. Entries appear in alphabetical order by composer, and, in every instance, give a brief introduction to the composer’s life and work. Of particular interest are the brief spotlight contributions, from well-known figures in the chamber music world, who focus on the performance experience or offer special knowledge of the works. This work is an ideal introduction and reference for students and scholars, new listeners, and enthusiasts of the chamber music tradition in Western music. Download or read book Ruth Gipps written by Jill Halstead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ruth Gipps died in 1999, her legacy was as one of Britain's most prolific female composers. Her creative output spanned some seventy years and includes symphonies, tone poems, concertos, string quartets and various large-scale choral and chamber works. Not content with her creative activities, her boundless energy fuelled her other roles as conductor, concert pianist, orchestral musician and pedagogue. Her many talents were acknowledged but not always respected and she was a figure often dogged by controversy. She gained a reputation for being uncompromising both personally and musically, a reputation that was ultimately to leave her isolated. In the first major review of her life and work the importance of Ruth Gipps is established in two ways: first, as a pioneering woman composer and conductor whose work challenged prevailing attitudes in the era directly after the war and second, as a composer whose musical philosophy was often at odds with mainstream thinking. Although she was branded a reactionary, her position reveals a number of important counter currents in English musical life in the twentieth century. The first section of the book documents her formative years, her life as child prodigy, the disruption and opportunities offered by war, the dramatic end of her career as a concert pianist and her subsequent entry into the world of conducting. The influence of key figures such as Vaughan Williams, Arthur Bliss, Malcolm Arnold and George Weldon is explored, as is Gipps's habitually thorny relationship with a range of musical institutions including the BBC and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In the second part of the book her compositional output is reviewed. Works are explored via the guiding themes of her creative agenda; namely anti-modernism and Englishness. The book closes with an analysis of a group of works which all have gendered narratives or readings. As Gipps regularly used personal experience as the basis for such musical narr
Download or read book The String Quartet written by Jos Langens and published by Jos Langens. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever thought about how you as a human being are part of a species that makes the fate of all other living things entirely subservient to its own needs and uses its fellow inhabitants purely to meet those needs? What would happen if that were to change? What would happen if people chose to exchange that which makes them human for something else? That's what seems to be happening in "The String Quartet". A string of seemingly inexplicable events gradually reveals how our anthropocentric way of life is about to be fundamentally and irrevocably changed. Classical string quartet music plays a central role in these events. How do these situations arise, and what is the driving force behind the sometimes irrational choices people make – or seem to make – of their own free will? The events described in The String Quartet and the resulting choices people make invite you as a reader to reflect on your own situation and how you lead your life. What choices have you made, and what choices will you make in the future? And how sure are you that those choices are yours?
