Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last 10 years, the immune system of ruminants, especially T cells and their interactions with other cells, has been an important topic of study for veterinary immunologists and an area of interest for medical and fundamental immunologists. This book brings together all the latest data on ruminant cell-mediated immunology. In the first half of the book, leukocytes and their membrane molecules and cytokines are reviewed. Markers, tissue distribution, functional characterization, ontogeny, cytokines, and histocompatibility are covered in depth in separate chapters. In the second half of the book, cell-mediated immune responses against infectious diseases such as East Coast fever, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, foot and mouth disease, maedi-visna, and gastrointestinal nematodes are analyzed. The application of cytokines to ruminants against infectious diseases is also reviewed.

Book excerpt: This book has been cunningly designed to provide an overview of our current knowledge about the innate immune systems of these three types of organisms. It not only covers the innate immune mechanisms and responses of such diverse organisms as plants, Cnidaria, Drosophila, urochordates and zebrafish, but also the major receptor systems in mammalians and humans. It delves too into the central defense mechanisms, antimicrobial peptides and the complement system.

Kesterson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypothesis of this study is that RB51 booster vaccinations will provide either increased cell mediated or humoral immunity as compared to a single calf-hood vaccination alone. This research includes four specific aims; 1) that multiple doses of RB51 vaccine will induce a measurable increase in cell-mediated and humoral immunity and that this will correlate with a decreased incidence of infection and abortion at challenge; 2) that multiple doses of RB51 will not induce abortion when an adult booster vaccination is given during pregnancy; 3) that we will be able to correlate cell-mediated immunity data with a predicted outcome at challenge to establish an immune correlate for vaccination; 4) that RB51 titers to multiple doses of vaccine will correlate with previous studies in terms of safety of the vaccine. Cattle have been divided into four treatment groups; three treatment groups (n=7 each) and a control group (n=4). Each treatment group was assigned to be vaccinated with zero, one, two, or three doses of vaccine. All cattle were treated under normal ranching conditions and were vaccinated for diseases following the usual protocols for this region. Cell-mediated immunity has been measured through semi-quantitative PCR, cytokine suspension array, flow cytometry, and cell proliferation and killing assays. Humoral immunity was measured through an RB51 ELISA developed de novo at the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (WSVL). Cell killing assays were used to determine the up-regulation in cytokine expression and cell killing. An immortalized bovine macrophage cell line was obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture facility in Ames, IA to perform cell-mediated immunity assays. Baseline results will be presented for all assays listed above. The results will reflect data from all three RB51 vaccine doses. Conclusions will be presented as the characterization and comparison of all three vaccine associated immune responses. Vaccinated cattle and control cattle were challenged with B. abortus S2308 to determine the efficacy of multiple doses on bacterial burden and incidence of abortion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been recognized in printed records dating from the sixteenth century, and since the eradication of rinderpest (cattle plague) in the early part of the twentieth century it has been rec- nized as the most important and feared disease of cattle and other dom- tic livestock. The beginning of the twenty-first century brought the worst outbreak of FMD ever experienced in England, which had been completely free of the disease for 33 years. This tragic epidemic, which spread to Northern Ireland, Scotland, France and the Netherlands with severe e- nomic consequences, emphasized the need for further research into better methods for the detection and control of the disease. FMD is caused by a small RNA virus which is highly contagious and can survive in meat and other animal products for long periods at normal pH levels. The virus typically infects cloven-hoofed animals, including c- tle, goats, pigs and sheep, as well as a wide range of non-domesticated a- mals in regions of the world where FMD virus is endemic, such as the Af- can continent. There are seven recognized serotypes of FMD virus, with numerous subtypes, and as a consequence vaccine production and administration is complex and a major debate surrounds every disease outbreak regarding the relative merits of vaccination as opposed to the slaughter of all infected animals.

Book excerpt: In short, all organ-systems are interrelated in a physiological as well as an immunological sense. While such interrelationships as the gut and mammary gland are very obvious, those involving other systems may be more subtle, but they are no less important and certainly not to be ignored. While scientists in ruminant immunology should have little trouble justifying their activities from an economic standpoint, such purely practical considerations alone should not dictate our desire to understand the basic mechanisms of the ruminant immune system. On the contrary, such an approach can be extremely dangerous. In every society and discipline, pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowledge has its rightful place.
