Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Multiple Functions of the Endothelial Cells / Calcium Signaling in Vascular Cells and Cell-to-Cell Communications / Endothelium-Dependent Regulation of Vascular Tone / Conclusion / References

Download or read book Integration of Mitochondrial Function written by J.J. Lemasters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In aerobic tissues such as heart, brain, kidney, liver and brown fat, mitochon dria account for more than 20% of cell protein and play an essential role in res piration, ATP formation, ketogenesis, gluconeogenesis, amino acid metabolism, ureagenesis, thermogenesis and a variety of other metabolic activities. The mecha nisms by which these activities are integrated and regulated within the overall context of cellular physiology is of much current research interest. In order to bring together scientists examining the various diverse aspects of this overall pro blem, an International Conference on INTEGRATION OF MITOCHONDRIAL FUNC TION was held June 4-7, 1987 at the Hanes Art Center on the campus of the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The chapters of this volume derive from presentations made at this conference. The focus of INTEGRATION OF MITOCHONDRIAL FUNCTION is on signifi cant new experimental and theoretical advances concerning integration of mito chondrial function at the organelle, cell, tissue and whole organism levels of organization.

Book Synopsis The Mechanism of gated calcium Transport across Biological Membranes by : S. Tsuyoshi Ohnishi
Download or read book The Mechanism of gated calcium Transport across Biological Membranes written by S. Tsuyoshi Ohnishi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mechanism of Gated Calcium Transport Across Biological Membranes presents the proceedings of a symposium, which was an unprecedented attempt to bring together diverse groups working on various aspects of the problem of gated Ca2+ transport. A variety of tissues, from Paramecium to vertebrate, and from the cell membrane to the internal membrane system, are included. This attempt appears to have been a success as many participants felt that they learned a great deal about the phenomenon in different preparations. This book is divided into six sections, with the first focusing on gated calcium transport in various tissues. It discusses such topics as the general properties of gated calcium transport, development of calcium channels in the cleavage-arrested embryo of a certain ascidian, and calcium currents in mammalian neurons. The following sections then focus on the kinetics of gated calcium transport; the pharmacology of gated calcium transport; regulation of gated calcium transport; calcium release from fragmented SR; and calcium-induced calcium release. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of pharmacology, physiology, and experimental pathology.

Book Synopsis Calcium Entry Channels in Non-Excitable Cells by : Juliusz Ashot Kozak
Download or read book Calcium Entry Channels in Non-Excitable Cells written by Juliusz Ashot Kozak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium Entry Channels in Non-Excitable Cells focuses on methods of investigating the structure and function of non-voltage gated calcium channels. Each chapter presents important discoveries in calcium entry pathways, specifically dealing with the molecular identification of store-operated calcium channels which were reviewed by earlier volumes in the Methods in Signal Transduction series. Crystallographic and pharmacological approaches to the study of calcium channels of epithelial cells are also discussed. Calcium ion is a messenger in most cell types. Whereas voltage gated calcium channels have been studied extensively, the non-voltage gated calcium entry channel genes have only been identified relatively recently. The book will fill this important niche.

Book Synopsis The Transfer of Calcium and Strontium Across Biological Membranes by : R Wasserman
Download or read book The Transfer of Calcium and Strontium Across Biological Membranes written by R Wasserman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Transfer of Calcium and Strontium Across Biological Membranes represents the proceedings of a Conference on The Transfer of Calcium and Strontium Across Biological Membranes, held in Cornell University, Ithaca, New York on May 13-16, 1962. This book is organized into seven sections encompassing 22 chapters, and deals first with some of the properties of biological membranes, the general aspects of ion transport, and chelation of divalent cations. These subjects are all important to understand the transfer of calcium and strontium across membranes. The subsequent sections are devoted to the physiological and nutritional aspects of intestinal absorption, with a particular emphasis on the influence of vitamin D and other nutritional factors on the absorption of calcium and strontium. A section describes the biological transfer and movement of calcium and strontium across kidney, mammary gland, nerve, and muscle. The last section examines the behavior of chronically ingested radiostrontium in animals. This section also provides an overview of strontium and calcium metabolism principles.
Book Synopsis Calcium and Phosphate Transport Across Biomembranes by : Felix Bronner
Download or read book Calcium and Phosphate Transport Across Biomembranes written by Felix Bronner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium and Phosphate Transport Across Biomembranes is a collection of papers presented at the 1981 Calcium and Phosphate Transport Across Biomembranes international workshop held in Vienna, Austria. Contributors from a wide range of disciplines explore the intracellular role of calcium and phosphate and their transport into and out of the body through the intestine and the kidney. In particular, they describe calcium movement in the cell and across the plasma membrane, along with phosphate transport into the cell, particularly, at the brush border. Organized into 10 sections encompassing 53 chapters, this collection begins with an overview of the mechanisms underlying the net movements of calcium in the cell and plasma membrane. The discussion then shifts to the crystal structure of calmodulin, the phosphate transport in the mitochondria, the mechanisms for calcium extrusion, the calcium uptake by brush border membranes, and the possible role of the mitochondria in intracellular calcium regulation. The book also introduces the discussion on mitochondrial calcium transport protein, polypeptide and amine hormone regulation of calcium fluxes, mechanism of secretion by cultured pituitary cells, and regulation of the tubular transport of phosphate. A chapter that assesses the effects of vitamin D and insulin on phosphate transport in the differentiating chick small intestine concludes the book. This collection of papers will be of interest to scientists, neurochemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, biochemists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, and pathophysiologists.

Book Synopsis Calcium and Cellular Metabolism by : J.R. Sotelo
Download or read book Calcium and Cellular Metabolism written by J.R. Sotelo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we began to organize the workshop "Calcium and Cellular Metabolism: Transport and Regulation" the goal we had in mind was to put together the knowledge of 2 several specialists on Ca + homeostasis, with various examples of cellular metabolisms 2 2 (such as protein synthesis), regulated by Ca + ions. Regarding the homeostasis of Ca + ions, we invited Ernesto Carafoli to write the first chapter as a general state-of-the-art introductory review. On the other hand, the other chapters are the contribution of different specialists on membrane calcium transport mechanisms, aiming to reunite at least in part the wide field of calcium homeostasis. We roughly try to group chapters that share similar subjects. The first group of chapters (Chapters 2 to 6), are mainly related to calcium channels. Thus, Chapter 2 by Rodolfo Llimis et a!. describes a new concept related to the dimen sions of the calcium action domain at the inner mouth of calcium channels in the squid gi ant synapse and its relationship to neurotransmitter release. Chapter 3 by Martin Morad et a!. informs us about new ways of identifying and measuring, by confocal microscopy, in dividual sites where calcium release occurs in ventricular myocytes. In the same group Osvaldo Uchitel and Eleonora Katz classify and evaluate the variety of calcium channels at the neuromuscular junction, in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 by Gustavo Brum et a!.
