Book excerpt: The Irreducible I: Space, Place, Authenticity, and Change examines subjectivity within the shared space of the everyday, engaging an eclectic mix of disciplines from Bruno Latour's social theories to Barbara Hammer's filmic possession of the feminine. The writings of Georges Perec and Raoul Vaneigem are tested against the observations of geographer Yi-Fu Tuan, journalist Naomi Klein, and social historian W. E. B. Du Bois, connecting processes by which humans become subjects and non-humans, technologies, and objects become key relational elements in the formation of an authentic space of daily life. Works by Felix Guattari, Kathy Acker, Avital Ronell, Bruno Latour, Gloria Andaldua, and Michel de Certeau are brought together, locating pathways of resistance to the narrowing of experience by state and corporate agendas for control. The relational I emerges as a key for human agency, for presenting an everbecoming self to an ever-forming and interconnected global landscape of actual possibility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth examination of the novel ways young people support and learn from each other though participation in online fanfiction communities. Over the past twenty years, amateur fanfiction writers have published an astonishing amount of fiction in online repositories. More than 1.5 million enthusiastic fanfiction writers—primarily young people in their teens and twenties—have contributed nearly seven million stories and more than 176 million reviews to a single online site, Fanfiction.net. In this book, Cecilia Aragon and Katie Davis provide an in-depth examination of fanfiction writers and fanfiction repositories, finding that these sites are not shallow agglomerations and regurgitations of pop culture but rather online spaces for sophisticated and informal learning. Through their participation in online fanfiction communities, young people find ways to support and learn from one another. Aragon and Davis term this novel system of interactive advice and instruction distributed mentoring, and describe its seven attributes, each of which is supported by an aspect of networked technologies: aggregation, accretion, acceleration, abundance, availability, asynchronicity, and affect. Employing an innovative combination of qualitative and quantitative analyses, they provide an in-depth ethnography, reporting on a nine-month study of three fanfiction sites, and offer a quantitative analysis of lexical diversity in the 61.5 billion words on the Fanfiction.net site. Going beyond fandom, Aragon and Davis consider how distributed mentoring could improve not only other online learning platforms but also formal writing instruction in schools.

An exciting new relationship with a great guy convinces her that it might not be too late—until he drops a bombshell that has her questioning whether she really can have it all. Although Pam Eiland adores her husband, she feels restless now that the kids are grown. Finding sexy new ways to surprise him brings the heat and humor back to their marriage, but when unexpected change turns her life upside down, she'll have to redefine herself. Again. Through romance and heartbreak, laughter and tears, the girls of Mischief Bay will discover that life is richer with friends at your side. Don't miss Susan Mallery's latest book, The Stepsisters! Book excerpt: Teacher Mr Bernard Boyle (aka Bernard0 B0ilinni Ringhi0 di R0ssi of the Orb Zeronia) was almost out of breath, but never of magical Boyle-Breaths - good and bad! (BOYLE-BREATH - Bk1). Bernard had just been made Acting Head at Roquefort High School, and Bernard0 had saved a teenage school suicide jumper off Roqueforts infamous 3Rs bridge, its Rogue-Rapids Roadbridge; but at the action-packed end of Bernards first term as a Depute Head (BOYLE-BREATH BREATHES - Bk2) the Highs Mr Damien Mortenson had resigned. Aaron Brown somehow had survived; but Damien had had enough, especially his having found out that school bully-chief Nikki Dedsons evil-mentor Cameron Mitchell was his own (previously sent for adoption) son! Quite why Dedsons helper-in-chief Aaron Brown had tried to kill himself was a secret known only to the Bernards and the boy himself. A new school term beckoned, so schoolchildren and their families did too (indeed Boyles half-Zero children Rino and Zea were now both 13 younger Zero girls catching up with 0 brothers in actual human age as well as the usual intelligence and behaviour). Bullying was continuing also; sances, ghosts and vampires, dream-haunting and clinical depression but murder? Social Workers, theyre always about somewhere, always for the best yeah? Immigrants and gypsies, angels and devils, tattooists and em referees? IEDs! (But what if that Time-shifting sniper Mortenson had been able to pull the trigger on Lady Di; what if the Confederates won the American Civil War...would Abraham Lincoln have become a Vampire Slayer? That Butterfly Effect theory, Ray, does it hold truth? Really, really?) Father Stephen OReilly, what of him...a Time-travelling priest? Bless me Father!! Remember HIM &HER? Mm well of course you do! What if Richard and Faith decided to get married and tell everyone everything in the end?! Nikki Dedson: the Bully extraordinaire? Yes, hes still alive, but hes in two worlds now. Is he still a bully? Of course he is, and in both! Boyle-Breath is a stinker, but with all those earthly pongs and perfumes at his beck and call he could, he had, and he would continue to help change noses, minds, lives, worlds! What was Mr Boyle to do first though? How was his Zeronian half Bernard0 to help? Where was a question: Earth &/or Zeronia? When was the subsequent problem...the Past, the Present; the Future?? Theyd beginat the End. Boyle-Breath Breathes BREATHTAKING! The Zeronian Bugle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone in fourteen-year-old Cecilia’s Mexican-American community has a don—a special gift or talent. Her father, who’s named after St. Anthony, helps people find things, or parts of themselves, that they’ve lost. Paco, the janitor in the building where she lives, can tell fortunes. Cecilia can’t figure out hers, and she really needs to since her confirmation is coming up. The truth is, Cecilia doesn’t really believe people have celestial gifts. Her opinion begins to change when she gets apprenticed to Dona Faustina, who has a magic way with coffee. Soon Cecilia realizes that her apprenticeship involves something more sinister than a mystical brew! And on a trip back to the special Mexican village of Santa Cecilia, she and her friends Julie and Lebna learn something about friendship, community and the powers of good and evil. Award-winning author Viola Canales returns with an appealing novel for teens that highlights a Mexican-American immigrant community and the conflict first-generation young adults experience caught between contemporary American life and their parents’ traditional ways.
