Book excerpt: The maturity of cd-rom technology now shows a dramatic change in the way librarians and teachers do their jobs. Among their biggest challenges are deciding on equipment requirements and managing the disk collection. This manual is an understandable step-by-step guide to making the most of cd-rom technology in schools and libraries--from the acquisition of workstations to purchasing and installing disks. Part 1 gives the nuts and bolts on designing your cd-rom system and developing acquisition strategies. Such topics as hardware requirements, furniture, financial planning, selection criteria, compatibility between systems, copyright issues, and licensing are covered here. Part 2 is a practical guide to managing the cd-rom system, including details on installation of the titles, maintaining hardware and software, and troubleshooting the system. Technical information is provided in Part 3, with information on such matters as configuring the workstations and installing cd-rom titles when the vendor-supplied program fails, and solving common problems associated with dos, Windows, and Macintosh systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's enterprise cannot effectively function without a network, and today's enterprise network is almost always based on LAN technology. In a few short years, LANs have become an essential element of today's business environment. This time in the spotlight, while well deserved, has not come without a price. Businesses now insist that LANs deliver vast and ever-increasing quantities of business-critical information and that they do it efficiently, flawlessly, without fail, and most of all, securely. Today's network managers must consistently deliver this level of performance, and must do so while keeping up with ever changing, ever increasing demands without missing a beat. At the same time, today's IT managers must deliver business-critical information systems in an environment that has undergone radical paradigm shifts in such widely varied fields as computer architecture, operating systems, application development, and security. The Local Area Networks Handbook focuses on this collective environment, in which networking and information technology work together to create LAN-based enterprise networks. Topics have been selected and organized with this in mind, providing both depth and breadth of coverage. The handbook will provide you not only an understanding of how LANs work and how to go about selecting and implementing LAN products, but also of how to leverage LAN capabilities for the benefit of your enterprise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local Area Networks (LANs) have a high potential for alleviating many of the problems associated with stand-alone microcomputers. Kibirige's issue-oriented study explores microcomputer networking systems with particular emphasis on LANs. Although his analysis emphasizes issues from an information scientist's perspective, readers who want to gain an understanding of LAN technology and its applications should find it useful. "Kibirige . . . adds a unique flavor to his book by discussing the LAN as an information-processing structure--putting more emphasis on the utility of LANs than on the technology. Kibirige argues that the LAN is an information-optimization structure that allows the individual and the organization to get maximum utility from the information services and products available, such as the large external databases, e.g. CompuServe. . . . many of the applications he discusses should be of interest to upper-division library science students." Book excerpt: Telecommunications will face a tremendous challenge in the coming years to be able to design, architect, and manage networks in such a rapidly evolving industry. Develop ment and application of heuristic methods will be fundamental to our ability to meet this challenge. Robert Doverspike, AT&T Labs Research Iraj Saniee, Bell-Labs, Lucent Technologies June PI, 1999 3 '' Journal of Heuristics, 6, 9-20 (2000) •"'Il © 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers Telecommunications Network Case Study: Selecting a Data Network Architecture ERIC ROSENBERG AT&T Labs, Middletown, NJ 07748, USA email: eric. rosenberg@att. com Abstract This paper documents a model that was pivotal in deciding which of two architectures should be selected for a frame relay data communications network. The choices are either to continue using the current architecture, or to make a large incremental investment in new equipment which reduces the number of high speed inter-office trunks required to interconnect the switches. The analysis requires optimizing the mix of two types of customer port cards to determine the maximum customer port capacity of a switch. Simple approximations are used to estimate the number of inter-office trunks and trunk cards required. Based in large part on the costs computed by this model, an executive level decision was made to move to the new architecture. Key Words: data communications, network architecture, network design, frame relay, virtual circuits, economic analysis 1. Introduction To design a data communications network, it is necessary to consider a variety of factors.
