Book excerpt: Decision making in modem obstetrics and perinatology is con trolled by a variety of different factors, but there is little doubt that in industrialized countries one of the most powerful single factors is the concern and fear of causing permanent brain damage in the unborn and newborn. The dramatic increase in the rates of abdom inal deliveries in many parts of the world is certainly rooted to a substantial part in the ~bstetrician's concern not so much about possible perinatal death, but more so about permanent brain dam age in surviving children. This trend has been accelerated by the increasing number of litigations in connection with brain damage observed in many societies. This problem itself has many aspects, but it seems evident that litigation - justified or unjustified - is one modem expression of the human and social tragedy inflicted on individuals and families by the birth of a brain-damaged child. The medical, social, and human importance of the problem is in sharp contrast to the relative lack of scientific knowledge avail able. This became very clear when the National Institutes of Health published the excellent review in 1985 on "Prenatal and Perinatal Factors Associated with Brain Disorders" and its editor, J. M.

Book excerpt: First published in 1986, Where it hurts provides a straightforward and accessible introduction to sociology for beginning students. In dealing with key areas of sociology (such as class, gender, race and ethnicity, age, work, and the state) and grounding theory and concepts in real issues, it demonstrates how sociology works in a specific application- the social history of health and health care. Students for whom sociology is part of a health or welfare-related course will find this a lively and thought-provoking text. But in its style and content, it responds equally well to the demands of all beginning students in sociology for a clear and relevant introduction to the critical tradition.

Although it is well known that life expectancy for Australians increased over the last century, analyses presented in this report show how the changes in the causes of death help to explain why we are living longer. This report describes patterns and trends in mortality over the century, highlighting the great successes but also some areas where improvements are still clearly needed.

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of the Oxford Textbook of Public Health, a major revision of the previous edition, updates the accomplishments in the field of public health, the continuing problems and the constantly changing agenda required to meet current and emerging challenges. As in the previous twoeditions, the book portrays the philosophy and underlying principles of public health, the methods used in the investigation of public helath problems and current solutions to these problems. In addition the textbook presents the moral basis for striving for "health for all" in the face ofincreasing fiscal and political pressures to reduce governmental support for this right. The textbook is intended to be a comprehensive reference source for postgraduate students in the field, but it is also written to provide insights for those not primarily in public health. It is intended to be a comprehensive textbook of this diverse field which will be included in the library ofevery major institution concerned with the field of public health and community-based, population-orientated medicine.Since the publication of the second edition of the Oxford Textbook of Public Health, major changes have occurred in the problems which public health must address. The editors have recruited leading authorities in the various aspects of public health to present and discuss continuing and newchallenges to promoting the health of the public. There are many examples of these new challenges. The first volume deals with the scope of public health, including its development, philosophy and change. The second volume presents the science, methods, and disciplines currently used by public health to identify, measure, and resolve health problems. The third volume presents the applications ofpublic health science to the resolution of the major public health problems occurring in the nineties, and the public health functions critically required to achieve these objectives.
