Download or read book Pet Politics written by Susan Hunter and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-15 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although scholars in the disciplines of law, psychology, philosophy, and sociology have published a considerable number of prescriptive, normative, and theoretical studies of animals in society, Pet Politics presents the first study of the development of companion animal or pet law and policy in Canada and the United States by political scientists. The authors examine how people and governments classify three species of pets or companion animals-cats, dogs, and horses-for various degrees of legal protection. They then detail how interest groups shape the agenda for companion animal legislation and regulation, and the legislative and administrative formulation of anticruelty, kennel licensing, horse slaughter, feral and roaming cat, and breed ban policies. Finally, they examine the enforcement of these laws and policies by agencies and the courts. Using an eclectic mix of original empirical data, original case studies, and interviews-and relying on general theories and research about the policy process and the sociopolitical function of legality-the authors illustrate that pet policy is a unique field of political struggle, a conflict that originates from differing perspectives about whether pets are property or autonomous beings, and clashing norms about the care of animals. The result of the political struggle, the authors argue, is difficulty in the enactment of policies and especially in the implementation and enforcement of laws that might improve the welfare of companion animals.

Book Synopsis Leaving the Wild by : Gavin Ehringer
Download or read book Leaving the Wild written by Gavin Ehringer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking and surprising book that explores the ever-evolving relationship between humans and domesticated animals. The domestication of animals changed the course of human history. But what are the consequences for these animals who have abandoned their wild existence in exchange for our care and protection? Domestication has proven to be a wildly successful survival strategy, but this success has not been without its drawbacks. A modern dairy cow’s daily energy output equals that of a Tour de France rider. Feral cats overpopulate urban areas. And our methods of breeding horses and dogs have resulted in debilitating and sometimes lethal genetic diseases. But these problems and more can be addressed, if we have the will and the compassion. Human values and choices determine an animal’s lot in life even before he or she is born. Just as a sculptor’s hands shape clay, so human values shape our animals—for good and or evil. The little-examined, yet omnipresent act of breeding lies at the core of Gavin Ehringer’s eye-opening book.

Book Synopsis Animals and Animal Dreams by : Regina Abt-Baechi
Download or read book Animals and Animal Dreams written by Regina Abt-Baechi and published by Daimon. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of a lifelong relationship with cats, dogs, and horses, Regina Abt a graduate of the Zurich C G Jung Institute in 1985 who worked for many years with Dr M-L von Franz, has the ability to understand the dream motifs of cat, dog, and horse in their unique and life-guiding ways. The personal and archetypal dimension of the psyche is nourished by this book. Animals in dreams tell us something about our own inner instinctual nature from which civilised man has increasingly distanced himself. They provide indications as to how we can once again show due respect for this instinctual life energy with its hidden knowledge, and also show us where we underestimate and violate them. In this book we look at animal dreams as a symbolic expression of the instinctual, that is, unconscious psychic functioning of man, which is crucial for the well-being of both the individual and the society.

Book Synopsis Safety of Dietary Supplements for Horses, Dogs, and Cats by : National Research Council
Download or read book Safety of Dietary Supplements for Horses, Dogs, and Cats written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-31 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing numbers of pet owners are giving their pets dietary supplements in hopes of supporting their health. Many people presume that supplements are safer than drugs, but the reality is that there are very limited safety data on dietary supplements for pets. Many challenges stand in the way of determining whether animal dietary supplements are safe and at what dosage. Supplements considered safe in humans and other species are not always safe in horses, dogs, and cats. An improved adverse event reporting system is badly needed. Also, the absence of laws and regulations that specifically address animal dietary supplements causes considerable confusion to the industry and to the public. Clear and precise regulations are needed to allow only safe dietary supplements on the market. This book examines issues in determining safety of animal dietary supplements in general, and the safety of three animal dietary supplements; lutein, evening primrose oil, and garlic, in particular.
