Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Was the Good Samaritan a Bad Economist? Charles K. Wilber argues that the American economy has not only failed to overcome poverty, it has generated extreme inequality that in turn restricts social mobility and further marginalizes the poor. Wilber argues that economic theory is permeated with ethical values and any economics must be so; that human behavior is more complex than the economists’ simple self-interest model; that people are also driven by deeply embedded moral values; that markets require intervention to create equity; and that Catholic social thought provides the perspective and values to develop a more relevant social economics. The author takes that modified economics and uses it to analyze specific social problems: labor markets, poverty, inequality, financial crisis, and development. Wilber next focuses on the important role of families, labor unions, parishes, and small Christian communities, such as the Catholic Worker movement, as mediating institutions in the economy. He concludes with a final look at the questions, "Was the Good Samaritan a Bad Economist?".

Book Synopsis Empirical Foundations of the Common Good by : Daniel K. Finn
Download or read book Empirical Foundations of the Common Good written by Daniel K. Finn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of the common good was borrowed by the Fathers of the early Catholic Church from the rich philosophical traditions of ancient Greece and Rome. It has been a fundamental part of Catholic thinking about social, political, and economic life throughout the Catholic intellectual tradition, from Augustine and Aquinas to modern Catholic social thought in the encyclicals of popes in recent centuries. Yet this history has been rooted in the traditions of philosophy and theology. With the rise of the social sciences in the nineteenth century as distinct disciplines no longer limited to the methods of their philosophical origins, humanity has learned a great deal more about the human condition. Empirical Foundations of the Common Good asks two questions: what have the social sciences learned about the common good? how might theology alter its understanding of the common good in light of that insight? In this volume, six social scientists, with backgrounds in economics, political science, sociology, and policy analysis, speak about what their disciplines have to contribute to discussions within Catholic social thought about the common good. Two theologians then respond by examining the insights of social science and exploring how Catholic social thought can integrate social scientific insights into its understanding of the common good. This volume's interplay of social scientific and religious views is a unique contribution to contemporary discussion of what constitutes "the common good."

Book Synopsis The Humanitarian Engagement of the Church in Nigeria by : Emmanuel Ayebome
Download or read book The Humanitarian Engagement of the Church in Nigeria written by Emmanuel Ayebome and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human dignity, decent life and human rights are effects of extensive humanitarian struggles by a people to achieve reasonable life for all. The possibility of such El Dorado was stalled in the past by unforeseen circumstances and other man-made tribulations in global history. However, these struggles will remain incomplete without a global perspective. Thus, taking the responsibility to understand humanity and her shortfalls in other parts of the globe becomes necessary. This quest consequently triggers the thorough study on how, where and why their plight is intrinsically tied to their social, cultural, religious and political background. Such genuine consequent studies can uproot the causal effect and thus guarantee the success of that developmental slogan of 'helping people to help themselves.' This study attempts to provide a platform that could chart a path towards sustainable answers to basic social questions.

This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Social Concerns provides community-based learning courses, community-based research, and service opportunities for students and faculty and lies at the heart of the University of Notre Dame. It is a place where faith and action, service and learning, research and resolve intersect. For more than 30 years the Center has offered educational experiences in social concerns inspired by Gospel values and the Catholic social tradition so that students and faculty may better understand and respond to poverty and injustice. Through the Center's programs students, faculty, staff, and alumni are enabled to think critically about today’s complex social realities and about their responsibilities in facing them. The Second Vatican Council articulated the significance of the baptismal call to discipleship for all believers, emphasizing active participation of the laity in the life of the church in the world. Responding to that urging, the Congregation of Holy Cross dedicated themselves to intentional formation of the laity through academic study of theology and through long-term immersion at their aposolates in the United States, Peru, Chile, and Uganda. The Center for Social Concerns, founded at the University of Notre Dame in 1983 by Fr. Don McNeill, C.S.C, deepened these efforts through a combination of pastoral theology, community-based learning, and lay formation for mission. This edited volume consists of eleven firsthand accounts from those directly formed by the Center for Social Concerns' approach to pastoral theology and through post-graduate collaboration in ministry with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. These fifteen essays will hold great interest for Catholics wishing to explore the implications of Vatican II for the church's mission in the world, for undergraduate and graduate students focusing on pastoral theology and missiology, and for all the people of good drawn to explore the relationships between faith and justice, contemplation and action.
