Teacher effectiveness in general has also been correlated with various aspects of school life such as student learning and achievement, teacher leadership, and school effectiveness. However, there is little research of what constitutes effective teaching in a Catholic school. The purpose of this study was to explore the degree of importance that Catholic secondary school principals of the Archdioceses of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York (N=166) attribute to the five qualities comprising Shimabukuro’s (1993, 1998) typology of the ideal Catholic school teacher and to the six qualities of effective teachers identified by Stronge (2002, 2007). This study investigated the qualities of effective teachers through the lens of secondary school administrators because by their role or position, they are responsible for all aspects of a Catholic school’s mission and purpose. Seventy-three Catholic secondary schools principals participated in this study, representing the archdioceses of Boston (n = 31), Chicago (n = 37), Los Angeles (n = 51), and New York (n = 47). This study utilized survey methodology. The researcher created an online survey instrument, which used and adapted, with permission, Shimabukuro’s (1993, 1998) typology of the qualities of the ideal Catholic school teacher and Stronge’s (2002, 2007) qualities of the effective teacher. The researcher combined both frameworks to serve as the conceptual framework of this study and categorized their combined qualities into four dimensions of the Catholic secondary school teacher’s vocation: (a) faith, (b) profession, (c) self and others, and (d) student learning. Principals who participated in this study perceived all of the qualities of the ideal Catholic school teacher (Shimabukuro, 1993, 1998) and the qualities of effective teachers (Stronge, 2002, 2007) as “important,” rating the affective qualities of a teacher to show the most relative importance with regard to teacher effectiveness. Principals’ ratings and rankings of the affective qualities the frameworks affirm the teachings of the Church and research within Catholic education regarding the centrality of relationships and community in Catholic education.

Book excerpt: The Perceptions of Catholic Elementary School Principals in the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon Concerning the Catholic Identity and Program Effectiveness of Their Respective Schools Since their inception in the 1800s in America, Catholic schools have been essential to the ecclesial mission of the Roman Catholic Church and to the formation of students for the common good. As Catholic schools move further into the 21st century, they face many challenges, including the formation of personnel in their Catholic identity, the high cost of tuition and operations of schools, the preoccupation for financial success of students, and the ongoing rise of secularism in our culture. The USCCB (2005) called upon the Catholic community to address these challenges and to support the advancement of Catholic schools across the nation especially with regard to their Catholic identity and their program effectiveness. This study examined the perceptions of the Catholic elementary school administrators in the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon regarding the extent to which Catholic identity and program effectiveness were operative in their respective schools. The administrators also identified factors that aided as well as challenged the concepts of Catholic identity and program effectiveness. Principals also offered recommendations to the Department of Catholic Schools in Portland to address their concerns. This study utilized mixed methods research: an online survey and face-to-face interviews. The study utilized the Catholic Identity Defining Characteristics Staff Survey and the Catholic Identity Program Effectiveness Staff Survey (Ozar & Weitzel-O’Neill, 2012). Of the 39 elementary school principals who received the invitation to participate in the study, 33, or 85%, accepted and completed the surveys (N=33). In addition, a purposeful sample of six administrators that matched the demographics of the general population was selected to complete face-to-face interviews. The collected data revealed that all of the administrators agreed or strongly agreed that Catholic identity and program effectiveness were exhibited in their respective schools. Principals recognized that a supportive pastor and shareholders were vital to their program effectiveness and identity and that strategic planning at the Archdiocesan level was needed.

Book excerpt: In addition to performing a myriad of administrative duties, Catholic secondary school presidents and principals are called to exercise "faith leadership" within their schools. Faith leadership is a distinctive aspect of Catholic school administration and one that the Catholic Church has historically acknowledged as paramount to its mission. Faith leadership in this study is defined as exercising the competencies and practices related to faith development, community building, moral formation, and mission advancement. This study investigated the perceptions of the presidents and principals of Catholic secondary schools in six (arch)dioceses within northern California--Monterey, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Stockton--regarding their practices and their preparation as the faith leaders of their schools. It examined how they exercised their faith leadership responsibilities at their schools relative to four areas: (a) fostering the faith development of school members, (b) building Christian community within the school and with stakeholders, (c) promoting the moral and ethical formation of school members, and (d) advancing the mission of Catholic education. This study utilized mixed methodology: survey research and telephone interviews. Sixty percent of the population, or 41 respondents, completed the on-line survey. Additionally, five survey respondents, representing the participating (arch)dioceses, participated in follow-up telephone interviews. Both presidents and principals under review reported that they exercised the competencies and practices of faith leadership in a variety of ways and to a great extent. They also reported that their experience as Catholic school administrators greatly influenced their ability to be faith leaders in all four areas studied. In addition, they perceived themselves to be prepared for faith leadership in all four areas. These findings are contrary to those of former studies on the topic.

Book excerpt: As for most of the developed world, Australia is no different in its scrupulous evaluation of school performance data. Annually much attention is given to data surrounding the performance of students, teachers and schools in high stakes Tertiary Entrance Examinations as students seek to qualify for a variety of university programs. So called U+2018league tablesU+2019 are produced measuring school performance on a number of criteria which differ marginally from state to state. Such tables identify both successful and less successful schools. Notwithstanding the limitations of such comparisons and the fact that success is a relative term there is a great deal of interest in the factors that contribute to the attainment of success in the Tertiary Entrance Examination context. This qualitative study identifies and interprets the factors attributed to the success of nine selected secondary schools in the Catholic Education System of Western Australia that have consistently outperformed other U+2018likeU+2019 schools (as measured by their socio-economic index) in the context of the state Tertiary Entrance Examinations. The schools in the study differed on factors such as socio-economic status, gender composition and geographic location. The purpose of the study was four-fold. Firstly, to identify characteristics of leaders in schools that have been identified as U+2018successfulU+2019. Secondly, to identify characteristics of teaching that has resulted in high achievement in the Tertiary Entrance Examinations. Thirdly, to identify characteristics of the student contribution to their schoolsU+2019 success; and finally, to identify the contribution and perceptions of parents in the selected high performing schools. Significantly, the study sought to obtain a U+2018gestaltU+2019 of effective schools by exploring whether the perceptions of each group contributed to a holistic understanding of the factors defining a successful school, in the context of the Tertiary Entrance Examination success. The qualitative research methodology utilized individual semi-structured interviews to gain data from principals and deputy principals in all nine schools. Semi-structured focus group interviews were employed with regard to heads of subject departments, teachers, students and parents across all nine schools. Within the qualitative epistemology, the theoretical perspective employed was an interpretative phenomenological analysis. The data collected was analysed using open coding. The use of four data sets allowed for data triangulation that provided a multi-dimensional and layered portrait of effective schools. Schools striving to attain the epithet U+2018successfulU+2019 might make use of findings as a valuable commencement point. Practical strategies for authentic whole school improvement that sustains student achievement are presented.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to determine if a relationship exists between visionary leadership in Catholic secondary school principals of one diocese and the professional development practices offered at their 2001 principals' academy. This study explored what academy courses were related to the seven pillars of visionary leadership defined by M. Cox and M. E. Rock. Through use of a survey, participants indicated the influence academy attendance had on their perception of themselves as leaders. Additionally, three of the twelve participants were interviewed to ascertain if attendance at the academy influenced their actions when they introduced a new program into their schools. The research from this study revealed that attendance at the 2001 principals' academy did not have a strong influence on the principals' perceptions of themselves as visionary leaders nor in how they introduced new programs into their schools. Although each of the courses had elements of the seven pillars of visionary leadership present in varying degrees, their influence on the actions of the principals acting as visionary leaders was not verified in this study.
