Book excerpt: In this in-depth, watershed volume, James Youniss and John J. Convey call for an immediate reexamination of Catholic schools, one focused closely on the problems endemic to the schools themselves instead of how they have impacted political issues, such as vouchers and school choice. In their timely contribution to this effort, the editors have compiled essays that explore how Catholic schools can retain their historical character while adapting to the demographic, personnel, and financial pressures confronting them at the turn of the millennium. Written by eminent researchers and scholars in the field of Catholic education, these essays provide insightful analysis and a wealth of new data to illuminate the challenges and strategies that help Catholic schools achieve their goals. This seminal volume uncovers the complex evolution of Catholic schools and looks toward their future. It will interest educators and anyone concerned with the development and well-being of parochial schools.

Book excerpt: School Choice at the Crossroads compiles exemplary, policy-relevant research on school choice options—voucher, private, charter, and traditional public schools—as they have been implemented across the nation. Renowned contributors highlight the latest rigorous research findings and implications on school vouchers, tuition tax credits, and charter schools in states and local areas at the forefront of school choice policy. Examining national and state-level perspectives, each chapter discusses the effects of choice and vouchers on student outcomes, the processes of choice, supportive conditions of school choice programs, comparative features of school choice, and future research. This timely volume addresses whether school choice works, under what conditions, and for whom—further informing educational research, policy, and practice.

Book excerpt: Catholic education in NSW and ACT is at a crossroads. Changes in enrolment patterns and in their educational and cultural context have radically affected the composition and roles of the Catholic school in recent years. In this Pastoral Letter the Bishops of NSW and the ACT invite reflection on the implications of their changing educational and cultural context, of the rising proportion of nominally-Catholic and other-than-Catholic enrolments, and of the under-participation of students from poorer families. They ask Catholic educational leaders, staff and parents, as well as the broader Catholic community, to join them in recommitting to Catholic schooling in the 21st century. [Back cover, ed]

Book excerpt: This book examines how Catholic educators grappled with public educational policies and reforms like standardization and accreditation, educational measurement and testing, and federal funding for schools during the early to mid-twentieth century. These issues elicited an array of reactions including resistance, cooperation, and co-optation. American Catholics had established one of the largest private educational organizations in the United States by the twentieth century. It rivaled only that of the public school system. At mid-century Catholic schools enrolled some 12 percent of the American school-age population and their enrollments grew in number through the 1960s. The Catholic Church’s lobbying arm, the National Catholic Welfare Conference (NCWC), used its well-earned stature to push for federal funds for students attending their schools. The NCWC succeeded in securing funds with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 for students needing special education services and students living in poverty attending Catholic schools. This signified a major shift in American education policy. Despite this radical change, Catholic schools lost significant enrollment over the next several decades to public, private, and newly minted public charter schools. Catholic schools faced an increasingly competitive landscape in an ever-expanding school-choice environment that they helped create.

Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking book, Gerald Grace addresses the dilemmas facing Catholic education in an increasingly secular and consumer-driven culture. The book combines an original theoretical framework with research drawn from interviews with sixty Catholic secondary head teachers from deprived urban areas. Issues discussed include: *Catholic meanings of academic success *tensions between market values and Catholic values *threats to the mission integrity of Catholic schools *the spiritual, moral and social justice commitments of contemporary Catholic schools This book will be equally useful to leaders of Catholic and other schools and to all those interested in values and leadership in schooling.
