Book excerpt: Critical or creative thinking is simply thinking of a higher order by persons informed by fact and logic, insight and empathy. It is necessary for problem solving, invention, and achievement. Every child has the ability to be a thinker. Thinking is an act and, as such, improves with practice. The curriculum and the teacher can help student thinking in several ways: (1) The teacher can set up projects that require thoughtful planning and execution. (2) Encouragement can be offered by the teacher when children try to exercise their mental powers. (3) Students can be given constructive feedback--the classroom should be an arena in which students are active and dialogue takes place. (4) Quantitative results can be downplayed without neglecting standards. (5) A key word should be cooperation--students should see themselves, not others, as the primary competitor. A brief review of the literature is provided, followed by a discussion of the kind of classroom environment that promotes thinking. The document then describes the social studies curriculum grade by grade and discusses, using concrete examples, how critical thinking can be integrated into the learning process. A 28-item bibliography is included. (JB)

Book excerpt: The Four Question Method identifies the questions that drive the thinking that real people do when they take the human world seriously. The authors, Jonathan Bassett and Gary Shiffman, have figured out how to describe and teach what it takes to answer those questions well. This inquiry method gives educators a way to integrate content 'coverage' – through storytelling! – with practice in thinking skills that are central to history and its affiliated academic disciplines, together called social studies. The Four Question Method helps teachers to plan more effectively and students to learn more effectively. It provides guidance for writing research essays. And it transfers: the skills our students practice will work for them when they encounter and make their own history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting and Ending with Thinking in Social Studies offers teachers a holistic system for incorporating historical thinking skills as the focus for instruction and assessment in a social studies classroom. Leveraging over two decades of teaching experience, this research-based approach to teaching critical thinking offers formulas, scaffolding, graphic organizers, and troubleshooting advice that create a unique and systematic approach to the discipline. This work offers a master class in seven historical thinking skills: causation, comparison, contextualization, change and continuity over time, interpretation, evaluation, and synthesis. It also offers techniques for implementing these skills in argumentation through meta-cognitive reflection and digital learning, culminating in increased life-long personal and professional success for both teachers and students. This model will clarify the teacher's approach to skill based instruction in social studies by generating a paradigm shift from recalling facts to performing rigorous critical thinking. In a world where students and employees can Google anything, it should be the primary goal of teachers to ensure that students instead learn to be discerning and creative in leveraging information. When implemented in the classroom, this ground-breaking system helps all students develop a growth mindset and abstract thinking flexibility that transcends the classroom and enhances employ-ability in the 21st century. As many educators can attest, abstract and complex thinking skills that are often passed on through modeling by affluent, educated parents are frequently missed by disadvantaged or at risk students. This work will also help students from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome socioeconomic academic and achievement gaps through thorough scaffolding and spiral teaching techniques. Incorporating backwards planning, this book serves as a comprehensive manual, as well as a quick reference tool, to guide and support teachers in implementing instruction, assessment, and reflection that evolves the discipline of social studies.
