This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis offers novel methods for catalyst and process design for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene and 1,3-butadiene. The author predicts the properties of supported Pd–Ni bimetallic catalysts using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The excellent correlation between model surfaces and supported catalysts demonstrates the feasibility of designing effective bimetallic catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions. The author also proposes a method for designing non-precious metal catalysts to replace precious metals. She modifies the process of selective hydrogenation of acetylene by coupling the selective adsorption to the selective hydrogenation in the liquid phase, as a result of which the ethylene selectivity is greatly improved and heat transfer is greatly enhanced. Lastly, by analyzing the mechanism of liquid-phase hydrogenation, the author proposes a multi-stage slurry bed reactor for industrial applications.“/p>

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gas-phase catalytic hydrogenation of acetylene to produce ethylene, commonly practiced in industries, has green oil formation, which leads to catalyst deactivation and sometimes reactor runaway risks due to high exothermicity. To overcome these issues as well as to increase the selectivity and conversion, liquid-phase hydrogenation of acetylene was investigated in packed bed reactors (PBR) using a commercial catalyst. The reactor performance of two-phase flow PBRs was assessed experimentally complemented by a validated mathematical model at different scales. The selective hydrogenation of acetylene in the liquid phase over a commercial 0.5 wt% Pd/Al2O3 catalyst was investigated in a slurry and basket stirred-tank reactor to extract the intrinsic and apparent kinetics respectively, and in packed bed reactors in trickle flow and upflow at selected operating conditions to study the reactor performance. The selective solvent, N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) with absorbed acetylene, was used as the liquid phase. Rate equation models were derived and fit to the experimental data to estimate the kinetic parameters. Using Residence Time Distribution (RTD) experiments at scaled-down operating conditions for different catalyst bed packings and types of reactors (with and without thermowell), the axial dispersion coefficient and dynamic liquid holdup were measured and correlated. The reactor performance was evaluated in the packed bed with the downflow and upflow of the reactants. Both the mode resulted in high conversion and ethylene selectivity while upflow performed better. The reactor scale model, integrating the kinetics and the hydrodynamic parameters along with the wetting and mass transfer correlations, was able to simulate the experimental data with good agreement"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamics and Mass Transfer in Downflow Slurry Bubble Columns by : Subrata Kumar Majumder
Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Mass Transfer in Downflow Slurry Bubble Columns written by Subrata Kumar Majumder and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slurry bubble column reactors are intensively used as a multiphase reactor in the chemical, biochemical, and petrochemical industries for carrying out reactions and mass transfer operations in which a gas, made up of one or several reactive components, comes into contact or reacts with a liquid. This volume describes the hydrodynamics of three-phase gas-liquid-solid flow in a downflow slurry bubble column. The efficiency of the downflow gas interacting system is characterized by the self-entrainment of secondary gas. The book covers the gas entrainment phenomena, gas holdup characteristics, pressure drop, gasliquid mixing characteristics, bubble size distribution, interfacial phenomena, and the mass transfer phenomena in the downflow slurry system. This volume will be useful in chemical and biochemical industries and in industrial research and development sectors, as well as in advanced education courses in this area. The book will be helpful for further understanding the multiphase behavior in gas interacting multiphase systems for research and development. The hydrodynamic and mass transfer characteristics discussed will be useful in the design and installation of the modified slurry bubble column in industry for specific applications.
