Book excerpt: During the past year we have completed our characterization of the factors that control the structure of fully oxidized W and Mo on silica and have established that support hydroxyl groups play a central role in dispersing and attaching cations to the support oxide. Work with M2(CO)4Cp2(M2=MoMo, WW, MoW) system has been very encouraging and continues to support the notion that it may be possible to control the structure of adsorbed catalysts (in this case generate metal dimers) by use of organometallic precursors. Techniques are being developed necessary to employ XPS as a means to characterize the attachment process and the oxidation state of the cations after various thermal and photolytic reduction steps.

Book excerpt: This project revolves around understanding the fundamental processes involved in the catalytic removal of harmful oxygenated organics present in coal liquids. We are modelling the complex type of sulfided Mo catalyst proposed for these reactions with simple single crystal surfaces. These display a controlled range and number of reaction sites and can be extensively characterized by surface science techniques. We then investigate the reaction pathways for representative simple oxygenates upon these surfaces. We have made considerable progress in characterizing the adsorption site of sulfur on the Mo(110) surface. The sulfur is probably located in the quasi-fourfold center hollow site on the surface at a vertical distance of about 1.5Å above the topmost metal layer. At present the calculations assume no reconstruction of the metal layer and this tentative finding may change when we allow the metal to reconstruct. We have also progressed in our understanding of the reactions of furan on these surfaces. The data is therefore consistent with propane adsorption being hindered relative to either ethylene or furan, but the release of hydrogen from adsorbed furan is a higher energy process than the equivalent process for a simple hydrocarbon. The effect of preadsorbed S on furan and hydrocarbon adsorption is consistent with an adsorption site blocking role.

Book excerpt: We are studying model catalysts in which the active phase is deposited onto flat oxide substrates in order to understand how a catalyst is affected by its support. We have examined the following growth and stability of titania overlayers which had been vapor deposited onto a Rh foil; the growth of Pt films on ZnO(0001)Zn and O(0001)O and compared the results to those obtained for Pt on?-Al2O3(0001). Samples were prepared by vapor deposition of Pt onto flat substrates in ultra high vacuum, and metal coverages were measured using a quartz-crystal, film thickness monitor; the structure and CO adsorption properties of Pt films vapor deposited onto a ZrO2(100) crystal; the deposition of Rh on a ZrO2(100) crystal; The absorption of NO on Pt particles supported on CeO2,?-Al2O3(0001), and the Zn- and O-polar surfaces of ZnO(0001). We have investigated supported oxides in order to understand the acidic properties that have been reported for monolayer oxides. Our first studies were of amorphous, silicalumina catalysts. Finally, we have also begun to prepare model supported oxides in order to be able to used spectroscopic methods to characterize the sites formed on these materials. Our first studies were of niobia deposition on oxidized Al films and on an?-Al2O3(0001) crystal.

Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's industrial policy has directed that nation's economy through nearly three decades of spectacular growth. But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Book excerpt: At 550°C, the 1 wt % SO42−l wt % Sr/La2O3 catalyst, one of the most active catalyst for the selective conversion of methane at these moderate temperatures, showed a very good stability with a reactant mixture of CH4/air = 1/1 with GHSV = 70,040 l/kg catal/hr. During a 25 hr catalytic test, the conversion of CH4 and the C2 selectivity did not change, indicating good stability of the catalyst. At the same time, the CO2/CO ratio remained steady at about 2.2, but the C2{sup =}/C2 ratio shifted slightly with time from 0.74 to 0.68. The oxidative coupling of CH4 to C2-hydrocarbons was very sensitive at 550°C to the alteration of the CH4/air reactant ratio at GHSV = 70,040 l/kg catal/hr. It was observed that the conversion of CH4, the C2 selectivity, and the %yield of C2+ hydrocarbon products decreased very rapidly with increasing CH4/air ratio from 1 to 3-4. At the largest CH4/air ratio of 40.77 that was used utilized, the CH4 conversion was less than 0-5 C-mol%. The reverse process of decreasing the CH4/air ratio from (almost equal to)40 to 1 showed nearly reversible catalytic performance, but some deactivation was apparent at the lowest reactant ratios. The 1 wt % SO42−1 wt % Sr/La2O3 catalyst used in the experiments in which the CH4/air ratio was varied subsequently revealed a good stability in the CH4 conversion level during testing at 550°C for 15 hr (GHSV = 70,040 l/kg catal/hr and CH4/air = 1/1). Indeed, the C2+ selectivity even increased by 3 to 4 C-mol%. Increasing the temperature from 550 to 600°C resulted in a further recovery of the activity of the partially deactivated catalyst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In chemical processes, the progressive deactivation of solid catalysts is a major economic concern and mastering their stability has become as essential as controlling their activity and selectivity. For these reasons, there is a strong motivation to understand the mechanisms leading to any loss in activity and/or selectivity and to find out the efficient preventive measures and regenerative solutions that open the way towards cheaper and cleaner processes. This book covers in a comprehensive way both the fundamental and applied aspects of solid catalyst deactivation and encompasses the state-of-the-art in the field of reactions catalyzed by zeolites. This particular choice is justified by the widespread use of molecular sieves in refining, petrochemicals and organic chemicals synthesis processes, by the large variety in the nature of their active sites (acid, base, acid-base, redox, bifunctional) and especially by their peculiar features, in terms of crystallinity, structural order and textural properties, which make them ideal models for heterogeneous catalysis. The aim of this book is to be a critical review in the field of zeolite deactivation and regeneration, by collecting a series of contributions by experts in the field which describe the factors, explain the techniques to study the causes and suggest methods to prevent (or limit) catalyst deactivation. At the same time, an anthology of commercial processes and exemplar cases provides the reader with theoretical insights and practical hints on the deactivation mechanisms and draws attention to the key role played by the loss of activity on process design and industrial practice.
