Book excerpt: The field of transition metal catalysis has experienced incredible growth during the past decade. The reasons for this are obvious when one considers the world's energy problems and the need for new and less energy demanding syntheses of important chemicals. Heterogeneous catalysis has played a major industrial role; however, such reactions are generally not selective and are exceedingly difficult to study. Homogeneous catalysis suffers from on-site engineering difficulties; however, such reactions usually provide the desired selectivity. For example, Monsanto's synthesis of optically-active amino acids employs a chiral homogeneous rhodium diphosphine catalyst. Industrial uses of homogeneous catalyst systems are increasing. It is not by accident that many homogeneous catalysts contain tertiary phosphine ligands. These ligands possess the correct steric and electronic properties that are necessary for catalytic reactivity and selectivity. This point will be emphasized throughout the book. Thus the stage is set for a comprehensive be treatment of the many ways in which phosphine catalyst systems can designed, synthesized, and studied.

Book excerpt: In the last decade there have been numerous advances in the area of rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation, such as highly selective catalysts of industrial importance, new insights into mechanisms of the reaction, very selective asymmetric catalysts, in situ characterization and application to organic synthesis. The views on hydroformylation which still prevail in the current textbooks have become obsolete in several respects. Therefore, it was felt timely to collect these advances in a book. The book contains a series of chapters discussing several rhodium systems arranged according to ligand type, including asymmetric ligands, a chapter on applications in organic chemistry, a chapter on modern processes and separations, and a chapter on catalyst preparation and laboratory techniques. This book concentrates on highlights, rather than a concise review mentioning all articles in just one line. The book aims at an audience of advanced students, experts in the field, and scientists from related fields. The didactic approach also makes it useful as a guide for an advanced course.

Book excerpt: Catalyst lifetime represents one of the most crucial economic aspects in industrial catalytic processes, due to costly shutdowns, catalyst replacements, and proper disposal of spent materials. Not surprisingly, there is considerable motivation to understand and treat catalyst deactivation, poisoning, and regeneration, which causes this research topic to continue to grow. The complexity of catalyst poisoning obviously increases along with the increasing use of biomass/waste-derived/residual feedstocks and with requirements for cleaner and novel sustainable processes. This book collects 15 research papers providing insights into several scientific and technical aspects of catalyst poisoning and deactivation, proposing more tolerant catalyst formulations, and exploring possible regeneration strategies.

Book excerpt: Molybdate, a molecular metal oxide, readily binds CO2 at room temperature to produce a robust monocarbonate complex, [MoO3(k2-CO3)]2−. In the presence of excess CO2, a pseudo-octahedral dioxo dicarbonate complex, [MoO3(k2-CO3)2]2−, is formed. The monocarbonate [MoO3(k2-CO3)]2− reacts with triethylsilane to produce formate together with silylated molybdate. A different system investigated in the context of CO2 reduction to formate was sodium borohydride. The uptake of three equivalents of CO2 by NaBH4 is described, along with full spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization of the resulting triformatoborohydride, Na[HB(OCHO)3]. In order to develop catalytic transformations for CO2 utilization, we undertook an extensive investigation into the synthesis of novel phosphine ligand architectures that could support transition metal catalysts. A new, chelating, cationic P,N-ligand, [pyP2dmb2][SbF6], was synthesized by treatment of the robust bicyclic diphosphane, 3,4,8,9-tetramethyl-1,6-diphosphabicyclo(4.4.0)deca-3,8-diene or P2dmb2, with 2-iodopyridine, followed by an anion exchange. This phosphino-phosphonium salt was investigated as a ligand for group 6 and group 10 transition metals. Other cationic and zwitterionic ligand frameworks were also briefly investigated. A family of cis-macrocyclic diphosphines was prepared in just three steps from white phosphorus and commercial materials using a modular synthetic approach. Alkylation of bicyclic diphosphane P2dmb2 produced phosphino-phosphonium salts [RP2dmb2]X, where R is methyl, benzyl, isobutyl, or neopentyl. Treatment of these salts with organometallic reagents yielded macrocyclic diphosphines of the form cis-1-R-6-R′-3,4,8,9-tetramethyl-2,5,7,10-tetrahydro-1,6-DiPhospheCine, or R,R′–DPC, in which R′ is methyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, mesityl or neopentyl. Alternatively, symmetric diphosphine Cy2–DPC was synthesized from the dichlorodiphosphine Cl2P2dmb2. Multidentate ligands with additional S, P and N donor atoms have also been prepared. The coordination chemistry of these cis-macrocyclic diphosphines was explored, with a focus on nickel and cobalt complexes. An unusual iodide-bridged cobalt(I) dimer, [(Cy2–DPC)CoI]2, was prepared and structurally characterized. These nickel and cobalt complexes supported by cismacrocyclic diphosphines were investigated as potential catalysts for the coupling of carbon dioxide and ethylene to produce acrylate, a valuable polymer precursor. The nickel complexes studied showed similar or better turnover numbers for acrylate production compared to complexes of commercial diphosphine ligands. Although not yet catalytic, the first examples of cobalt complexes capable of mediating acrylate formation from CO2 and ethylene are reported.

Book excerpt: During the 70's it has become drastically apparent that our natural resources, including energy, are not in unlimited supply. This realization is strongly felt in the economic turmoil that is occurring, but its effects will penetrate into other areas, even causing moderate social changes. Chemists playa major role in coverting the world's natural resources into products. The public consumes these products and now depends upon them to keep the high standard of living to which they have become accustomed. This topic could easily be expounded into a whole article, but it is sufficent to say that almost everything-from the use of lightweight, strong polymers which are replacing the use of metals in today's automobiles, to the curing of diseases with asymetrically synthesized drugs-is related to the endeavors of chemistry. Catalysts have played a major role in transforming resources to useful products. Since a catalyst lowers the activation energy required for a particular reaction, and often for only one specific pathway where normally many exist, it is not surprising within the extant climate that researchers are now increasing their efforts and focusing their priorities on improving and discovering more efficient and selective catalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanism of the rhodium(I) catalyzed dehydrocoupling of di-n-hexylsilane was investigated by isolating and characterizing products of stoichiometric reactions, by preparing a series of rhodium(I) phosphine precatalysts and silane substrates and measuring catalytic activity, and by observing catalytic reaction mixtures directly using 31P{ 1H} NMR spectroscopy. Catalyst initiation was found to occur via oxidative addition of silane to a rhodium centre, followed by reductive elimination of a chlorosilane generating an unsaturated rhodium hydride complex, the putative active catalyst fragment. The series of precatalysts screened for catalytic activity include [Rh(PPh3)3Cl] (1), [Rh(PPh3)2(μ-Cl)]2 (2). [Rh(dppe)(μ-Cl)]2 (3) [Rh(dppb)(μ-Cl)]2, (4) [Rh(COD)(μ- Cl)]2 (5), [Rh(PPh3)3H] (6), [Rh(PPh3)4H] (7), [Rh(xantphos)(COD)(Cl)]. (8). Of these eight precatalysts the two hydride complexes (6 and 7) displayed the highest catalytic activity. The flexibility of chelating bis(phosphine) ligands was found to be important for catalyst activity. Of the chelating bis(phosphine) rhodium complexes (3, 4, and 8), 4 displayed the highest catalytic activity. The catalyst resting state for all precatalysts containing the monodentate PPh3 ligand was found to be trans-[Rh(PPh3)2LX] when catalytic reactions were observed in situ by 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy. The substitution and steric bulk of the silane substrate was found to influence reactivity as well. Of the substrates studied, the least bulky primary n-hexylsilane was most reactive. By monitoring the reaction over by 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy, decomposition of the catalyst was found to involve phosphine dissociation. Decomposition was found to occur more slowly for precatalysts containing chelating bis(phosphine) ligands than for precatalysts containing monodentate phosphine ligands.

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanistic aspects of the asymmetric rhodium catalyzed hydroboration of vinyl arenes with catecholborane (HBCat) and pinacolborane (HBPin) have been probed. Competition studies conducted with catalysts bearing asymmetric ligands Josiphos or Quinap reveal substituent effects of varying sensitivity correlating to Hammett parameter sigma. In reactions involving the Quinap ligand, rho-values of +1.97 and +1.02 are observed for HBCat and HBPin, respectively. In Josiphos-ligated systems, rho-values of +1.38 and -3.17 are observed, indicating that the reaction proceeds through differing mechanisms depending on the borane employed. Labeling experiments reveal differences in the reversibility of the hydride insertion step of reaction depending on the ligand and borane implemented in hydroboration. A new methodology has been developed for regioselective rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration of internal olefins with pinacolborane. The addition of co-catalytic Lewis acids results in the activation of cationic rhodium catalysts in chlorinated solvents. Increased catalytic activity and regioselectivity are observed under these conditions. For internal alkyl olefins, selectivity for non-isomerized secondary boronate esters was found originate from the non-coordinating solvents employed in the reaction. For aromatic olefins, increased regioselectivity and reaction acceleration are both effects of the Lewis acid additive. Study of the reaction revealed that these properties are linked to Lewis acid-base mediated heterolytic B-H bond cleavage of pinacolborane, and suggests that the reagent is transferred to the rhodium catalyst as borenium ion and hydride moieties. Inhibition studies confirmed that Lewis acid is required throughout the reaction and does not solely act as an initiator.
