The experimental run was made using a Pamco coal-derived liquid containing 0.40% sulfur and 0.95% nitrogen. The catalyst utilized was an American Cyanamide HDN-30, Ni-Mo-Al2O3. Run conditions were at 399C (750F), 1500 psig and space times up to two hours. Sample analyses are not yet available from this experiment. Two runs were completed in the Catalyst Life Test Unit (CLTU) utilizing a liquid containing 50% Synthoil and 50% Raw Anthracene oil. This fluid has a 0.54% sulfur and 1.21% nitrogen. Two Ni-MoAl2O3 catalysts were used - Shell-324, and H-Oil. Both experiments were terminated prematurely because of equipment malfunction. Sample analyses are not yet available from these two experiments.

This reactor will be used to conduct investigations of throwaway type catalysts and zoned or mixed catalyst beds. It will also be used to support studies of catalyst activity decay. Most of these decay studies will be conducted in the Catalyst Life Test Unit (CLTU). The CLTU has been improved by redesign of the H2 flow system and several minor changes. A new H2 supply system has been designed and items ordered for installation. One experimental run was conducted in one of the three reactors of the CLTU. Raw anthracene oil was the feedstock and a vendor catalyst was used (Nalco, NM-502, Ni-Mo-Al2O3). Run conditions were: 700F(371C), 1500 psig and 2.0 hour space time (volume hourly). The objective of this run was to test equipment, familiarize personnel and to obtain a data base for future experiments. The sulfur removal was better than 95% throughout the 162 hours of operation. However, nitrogen removal activity decayed from 70% to about 35% after only 30 to 50 hours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear relationship represents the hydrogenation activity decay of catalysts used in four experimental runs reported previously. The weight percent hydrogen in the reactor product oils plotted against oil-catalyst contact time for experimental runs ZBB, ZBC, ZBD, and ZBE reveals a linear decay rate of 0.0083 wt% hydrogen per hour. This is one quantitative measure of catalyst activity decay. The data for the plot incorporate three different catalysts or combinations used to process a PAMCO liquid at 1500 psig, 435C and LVHST of 2 hours. The data set covers run duration of up to 120 hours of oil-catalyst contact. An air driven hydrogen compressor was installed in the Catalyst Life Test Unit to reduce the costs associated with bottle hydrogen. Minor repairs were made on the oil feed pump. Five experimental runs were made with Shell 324 NiMo/Al catalyst using two feedstocks: (1) 40 wt% EDS/EDS raw solvent and (2) 30 wt% SRC-I creosote oil. The EDS feed oil proved to be rather easily hydrotreated as evidenced by 82 to 100% nitrogen removal, essentially complete desulfurization and no catalyst activity decay during 260 hours of continuous operation. Rapid coking resulted from the highly hydrogen deficient SRC/creosote mixture. The Shell 324 catalyst gave excellent hydrogenation of both liquids by increasing the hydrogen content of the product oils by about 3.8 wt%. This catalyst will be used in future studies; however, a new feedstock consisting of 30 wt% SRC-I/PAMCO process solvent will be assessed for use in catalyst decay mechanism studies.

The experiments were designed to obtain data on zoned catalyst beds. This new reactor system demonstrated satisfactory performance in temperature, pressure and flow control. High desulfurization and denitrogenation were achieved on both catalysts tested at conditions of 815F, 1500 psig. These catalysts were a CoMo/Al and NiMo/Al. Zoned bed of 50-50 volume percent of the two catalysts tested revealed no advantages with respect to desulfurization, denitrogenation and activity decay. The level of nitrogen removal was initially high, but activity decay was significant over the operational interval of 100 hours. Two experimental runs were completed in the Catalyst Life Test Unit (CLTU) utilizing a liquid containing 50% Synthoil and 50% Raw Anthracene Oil. This fluid has a 0.54 weight percent sulfur and a 1.21 weight percent nitrogen. The catalyst used in this study was a Ni-Mo-Al2O3 (Shell 324). The objective of the experiments was to demonstrate the effect of diluting the catalyst bed with a small size inert particle to improve gas-liquid contact and reduce channeling. No difference could be distinguished between the use of particle sizes in the range of 0.25 to 1.00 mm diameter. One run was terminated prematurely because the small particles plugged the catalyst support screens. Precipitous catalyst activity decay was noted for both nitrogen and sulfur removal.

Book excerpt: Coal-derived liquids are characterized by the presence of a considerable concentration of oxygen-containing components. Therefore, a systematic catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) study of coal-derived liquids and related model compounds is being carried out. This study provides information not only on the mechanism of HDO as related to the subject of catalytic upgrading of coal-derived liquids, but also on the role of oxygen-containing compounds in primary coal liquefaction processes. The main objective of this research project is to develop effective catalyst systems and processing conditions for hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coal-derived liquids (CDL) in a wide range of nitrogen contents and structural type composition. This is of particular importance in view of the higher concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds in CDL as compared to that in petroleum feedstocks. For a better understanding of denitrogenation processes, the project includes systematic denitrogenation studies not only of CDL but also of related model N-containing compounds found in such liquids, e.g., phenanthridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, carbazoles, acridines, etc., as a function of catalysts type and experimental rate, mechanism and stereochemistry of HDN of structurally distinct N-containing aromatic systems in the presence of sulfided catalysts.

Book excerpt: The principal objective of this research is to evaluate the hydrotreatment properties of [gamma]-Al2O3 supported Mo oxynitride and oxycarbide catalysts. This information will be used to assess the potential of these materials for use as commercial catalysts for hydrotreating coal-derived liquids. During this quarter, the authors evaluated the catalytic properties of a series of supported molybdenum nitride catalysts. These catalysts were prepared in the laboratory for comparison with the supported molybdenum oxynitrides. Pyridine hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) was used as the test reaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved efficiency in direct coal liquefaction processes can be obtained by developing catalysts with better activity, selectivity, and life. In previous exploratory research at Sandia National Laboratories, catalysts prepared via hydrous metal oxide (HMO) ion exchangers have been shown to have potential for application to a number of reactions associated with the conversion of coal to liquid fuels. In the present effort, one member of this class of catalysts, hydrous titanium oxide (HTO), has been developed for use in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coal liquids. The unsupported (or bulk) NiMo-HTO catalyst performed well for HDS/HDN of a coal derived liquid as compared to the benchmark Shell 324 catalyst. The CoMo-HTO, while performing better than the Shell 324 catalyst, did not perform quite as well as the NiMo-HTO. In a side-by-side comparison of supported NiMo-HTO catalysts with commercial counterparts, the supported NiMo-HTO catalysts outperformed the Shell 324 and Amocat 1C catalysts on a weight of Mo basis. On a catalyst weight basis, the NiMo-HTO coated catalyst on a Shell 324 blank under performed Shell 324, while the NiMo-HTO coated catalyst on an Amocat 1C support performed as well as the Amocat 1C catalyst.
