This book was released on 2002-10-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whole journals are devoted to catalysis and books describe the various catalysts. However it is very difficult to find detailed protocols offering information on where to source catalysts, how to store them, how to activate them for the synthesis, how to perform the actual synthesis and how to recycle the catalysts out of the synthesis process. This new series of books (accompanied by CD-ROM) addresses all these issues. Each volume publishes approximately 40 detailed procedures and makes use of different catalysts. They are classified according to the type of reaction they are catalysing and in addition a section included incorporates reviews, comparisons between the different types of catalysts and highlights from research in the previous year. It includes approximately 40 detailed procedures and describes the use of different catalysts and is classified according to the type of reaction they perform. The chemist has a vast choice of high-tech catalysts to use when working in fine chemical synthesis but the catalysts are hard to use and require both skill and experience to handle properly. This book contains tested and validated procedures and provides a unique resource for chemists who work in organic chemistry.

This book was released on 2003-06-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catalysts are increasingly used by chemists engaged in fine chemical synthesis within both industry and academia. Today, there exists a huge choice of high-tech catalysts, which add enormously to the repertoire of synthetic possibilities. However, catalysts are occasionally capricious, sometimes difficult to use and almost always require both skill and experience in order to achieve optimal results. This series aims to be a practical help for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, as well as experienced chemists in industry and academia working in organic and organometallic synthesis. The series features: * Tested and validated procedures. * Authoritative reviews on classes of catalysts. * Assessments of all types of catalysts. * Expertise from the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis, Liverpool, UK. The review section in the first volume of the series contains a report by Stanley M. Roberts on the integration of biotransformations into the catalyst portfolio. The procedure section contains a wide variety of synthetic protocols, such as epoxidations of unsaturated ketones and esters, asymmetric reductions of carbon-oxygen double bonds, asymmetric hydrogenations of carbon-carbon double bonds and other types of reaction. The featured catalysts include a wide range of different materials such as poly-D-leucine, D-fructose-based dioxiranes, oxaborolidine borane, some important titanium and ruthenium complexes as well as baker's yeast. For each reaction there are one or several detailed protocols on how to prepare and employ the various catalysts.

The first chapter of this brief describes the importance of the selective oxidation of alcohols and advantages of heterogeneous catalysts over conventional catalysts, use of environmentally benign oxidants, and the design of selective catalysts by tailoring of polyoxometalates at the molecular level. Chapter 2 describes synthesis, characterization 11-molybdophosphate based supported materials and their use as heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of alcohols with molecular oxygen under solvent free mild reaction condition. ZrO2, Al2O3, MCM-41 and zeolite Hβ were used as supports. Chapter 3 describes synthesis, characterization of transition metals (Mn, Co, Ni, Cu)- substituted phosphomolybdates and their use as heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of alcohols with molecular oxygen under solvent free mild reaction condition. Chapter 4 describes conclusive remarks for present catalytic systems.

Book excerpt: Heteropolyacids as Highly Efficient and Green Catalysts Applied in Organic Transformations introduces heteropolyacids (HPAs) as promising candidates for use as green catalysts. This book initially presents an overview of chemistry of HPAs, including the history of their discovery and applications, systematic classifications, solubility, coordination and binding chemistry, isomerization, stability, redox activity, acidic properties, basicity, skeleton structure, structure types, self-assemblage, surface area, electrochemical behavior, methods of investigation, and characterization. Other sections present and compare the applications of HPAs as homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The book provides readers with a basic-to-advanced range of knowledge on how useful and green HPAs can be used for use as catalysts in organic transformations and even the synthesis of complex organic molecules. Focuses on applications of HPAs as catalysts, but also includes basic information on HPAs to make it useful to those researchers and scientists whose activities are focused on biochemical analysis, electrochemistry, electrochemical devices, protection of corrosion, medicine and photo-catalyzed reactions Includes a subdivision devoted to HPA-catalyzed multicomponent reactions for the synthesis of some biologically active compounds via a double-green strategy Illustrates reactions with approximately 100 chemical reaction schemes to aid understanding

The scale of production ranges from millions of tons per year to a few grams per year. The diversity of catalysts is large and encompasses all the known categories of catalyst type: homogeneous, heterogeneous, and biological. This book summarizes the current status in these fields concentrating on rates, kinetics, and reaction mechanisms, but also covers broad topics including modeling, computational simulation, process concepts, spectroscopy and new catalyst development. The similarities and distinctions between the different reaction systems are compared, and the latest advances are described. Comprehensive listing of epoxide products Broad comparison of turnover frequencies of homogeneous, hetergeneous, main-group, biomimetic and biological catalysts Analysis of the general strengths and weaknesses of varied catalytic systems Detailed description of the mechanisms of reaction for classical and emerging catalysts

Book excerpt: In the last years, there is an increasing interest in substituting old technologies by cleaner catalytic alternatives to afford more environmental friendly processes in the chemical industry. In this way, it is a continuous challenge to find new base catalysts able to perform, with high activity and selectivity, reactions for the synthesis of pharmaceutical and fine chemicals. The research described in this work has focused on the study of synthesis protocols for new types of hydrotalcite-like materials with controlled basicity and also, for a new family of short aliphatic chain ionic liquids. The basic properties have been characterized by several techniques and by illustrative test reactions such as the liquid-phase aldol condensation between aldehydes and ketones, double bond migration of olefins and synthesis of unsymmetrical organic carbonates. Good results in terms of conversion and selectivity were obtained employing these new catalysts. The work done in this study can be regarded as a progress in the design of new catalytic systems, more active and efficient for use in fine chemical processes.
