Book excerpt: A Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst was prepared by slurry coating ZSM-5 zeolite onto a cordierite monolith, then subliming an iron salt onto the zeolite, calcining the monolith, and then dipping the monolith either into an aqueous solution of manganese nitrate and cerium nitrate and then calcining, or by similar treatment with separate solutions of manganese nitrate and cerium nitrate. The supported catalyst containing iron, manganese, and cerium showed 80 percent conversion at 113 degrees Celsius of a feed gas containing nitrogen oxides having 4 parts NO to one part NO.sub. 2, about one equivalent ammonia, and excess oxygen; conversion improved to 94 percent at 147 degrees Celsius. N.sub. 2O was not detected (detection limit: 0.6 percent N.sub. 2O).

Book excerpt: A method for catalytically reducing nitrogen oxide compounds (NO.sub.x, defined as nitric oxide, NO, +nitrogen dioxide, NO.sub. 2) in a gas by a material comprising a base metal consisting essentially of CuO and Mn, and oxides of Mn, on an activated metal hydrous metal oxide support, such as HMO:Si. A promoter, such as tungsten oxide or molybdenum oxide, can be added and has been shown to increase conversion efficiency. This method provides good conversion of NO.sub.x to N.sub. 2, good selectivity, good durability, resistance to SO.sub. 2 aging and low toxicity compared with methods utilizing vanadia-based catalysts.

Book excerpt: Significant work has been done by the investigators on the cerium oxide-copper oxide based sorbent/catalysts for the combined removal of sulfur and nitrogen oxides from the flue gases of stationary sources. Evaluation of these sorbents as catalysts for the selective reduction of NO[sub x] gave promising results with methane. Since the replacement of ammonia by methane is commercially very attractive, in this project, the effect of promoters on the activity and selectivity of copper oxide/cerium oxide-based catalysts and the reaction mechanism for the SCR with methane was investigated. Unpromoted and promoted catalysts were investigated for their SCR activity with methane in a microreactor setup and also, by the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The results from the SCR experiments indicated that manganese is a more effective promoter than the other metals (Rh, Li, K, Na, Zn, and Sn) for the supported copper oxide-ceria catalysts under study. The effectiveness of the promoter increased with the increase in Ce/Cu ratio. Among the catalysts tested, the Cu1Ce3 catalyst promoted with 1 weight% Mn was found to be the best catalyst for the SCR of NO with methane. This catalyst was subjected to long-term testing at the facilities of our industrial partner TDA Research. TDA report indicated that the performance of this catalyst did not deteriorate during 100 hours of operation and the activity and selectivity of the catalyst was not affected by the presence of SO[sub 2]. The conversions obtained by TDA were significantly lower than those obtained at Hampton University due to the transport limitations on the reaction rate in the TDA reactor, in which 1/8th inch pellets were used while the Hampton University reactor contained 250-425-[micro]m catalyst particles. The selected catalyst was also tested at the TDA facilities with high-sulfur heavy oil as the reducing agent. Depending on the heavy oil flow rate, up to 100% NO conversions were obtained. The temperature programmed desorption studies a strong interaction between manganese and cerium. Presence of manganese not only enhanced the reduction rate of NO by methane, but also significantly improved the N[sub 2] selectivity. To increase the activity of the Mn-promoted catalyst, the manganese content of the catalyst need to be optimized and different methods of catalyst preparation and different reactor types need to be investigated to lower the transport limitations in the reactor.

Book excerpt: Nitrogen oxides are a major threat to human health and largely released by Diesel engines. The present book describes the preparation and characterization of appropriate catalyst systems for low temperature removal (150 - 400°C) and conversion of nitrogen oxides. The presented catalysts include commercially available activated carbon and zeolite supports, infiltrated with iron, copper, manganese and their oxides. The investigated catalysts adsorb and convert nitrogen dioxide almost completely and convert it quickly subsequently into the less toxic nitric oxide and nitrous oxide. Some eventually release nitrogen and oxygen, thus outperforming even the well-known Cu-ZSM-5 catalyst at low temperature.

Book excerpt: A hydrothermally stable dual-catalyst aftertreatment system for emission control of nitrogen oxides (NOx) with lower hydrocarbons (CHx) has been developed for natural gas-fired stationary lean-burn engines. The dual-catalyst system consists of a physical mixture of a reduction catalyst, palladium supported on sulfated zirconia (Pd/SZ) and an oxidation catalyst, cobalt oxide supported on ceria, CoOx/CeO2. The multifunctional aftertreatment system oxidizes nitric oxide (NO) to nitrogen dioxide (NO2), reduces NO2 to nitrogen (N2), and oxidizes carbon monoxide (CO) and the unutilized hydrocarbons. For practical applications in environmental catalysis, the catalytically active powder catalyst needs to be wash-coated onto a monolith core. To prevent permanent loss of activity due to physical separation of the wash-coat from the walls of the monolith core, adhesivity enhancing materials (binders) are added to the wash-coat. A novel method of incorporating binder to the active catalyst in situ during sol-gel synthesis is presented in this work. Alumina binder incorporated into Pd/SZ in situ during sol-gel synthesis was chosen for further development of a catalytically active washcoat based on activity tests under simulated engine-exhaust conditions. The alumina binder-incorporated Pd/SZ catalyst slurry controlled at pH 1 and calcined at 700°C demonstrated the most promising NOx reduction and CH4 oxidation activity. Cyclic thermal shock tests demonstrated enhanced adhesive properties of the wash-coat to the walls of the cordierite monolith core. Thus, a catalytically active wash-coat with superior adhesive properties was developed for practical application in a real-world aftertreatment unit.

Book excerpt: A multi-stage selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit (32) provides efficient reduction of NOx and other pollutants from about 50-550.degree. C. in a power plant (19). Hydrogen (24) and ammonia (29) are variably supplied to the SCR unit depending on temperature. An upstream portion (34) of the SCR unit catalyzes NOx+NH.sub. 3 reactions above about 200.degree. C.A downstream portion (36) catalyzes NOx+H.sub. 2 reactions below about 260.degree. C., and catalyzes oxidation of NH.sub. 3, CO, and VOCs with oxygen in the exhaust above about 200.degree. C., efficiently removing NOx and other pollutants over a range of conditions with low slippage of NH.sub. 3. An ammonia synthesis unit (28) may be connected to the SCR unit to provide NH.sub. 3 as needed, avoiding transport and storage of ammonia or urea at the site. A carbonaceous gasification plant (18) on site may supply hydrogen and nitrogen to the ammonia synthesis unit, and hydrogen to the SCR unit.
