Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A linear relationship represents the hydrogenation activity decay of catalysts used in four experimental runs reported previously. The weight percent hydrogen in the reactor product oils plotted against oil-catalyst contact time for experimental runs ZBB, ZBC, ZBD, and ZBE reveals a linear decay rate of 0.0083 wt% hydrogen per hour. This is one quantitative measure of catalyst activity decay. The data for the plot incorporate three different catalysts or combinations used to process a PAMCO liquid at 1500 psig, 435C and LVHST of 2 hours. The data set covers run duration of up to 120 hours of oil-catalyst contact. An air driven hydrogen compressor was installed in the Catalyst Life Test Unit to reduce the costs associated with bottle hydrogen. Minor repairs were made on the oil feed pump. Five experimental runs were made with Shell 324 NiMo/Al catalyst using two feedstocks: (1) 40 wt% EDS/EDS raw solvent and (2) 30 wt% SRC-I creosote oil. The EDS feed oil proved to be rather easily hydrotreated as evidenced by 82 to 100% nitrogen removal, essentially complete desulfurization and no catalyst activity decay during 260 hours of continuous operation. Rapid coking resulted from the highly hydrogen deficient SRC/creosote mixture. The Shell 324 catalyst gave excellent hydrogenation of both liquids by increasing the hydrogen content of the product oils by about 3.8 wt%. This catalyst will be used in future studies; however, a new feedstock consisting of 30 wt% SRC-I/PAMCO process solvent will be assessed for use in catalyst decay mechanism studies.

Book excerpt: Studies on the basic properties of supported sulfide catalysts showed that different supports have a profound influence on catalytic activities of CoMo catalysts. The three functions of hydrodesulfurization, hydrogenation and cracking were differently affected depending on the support used and the manner of preparation of the catalyst. Also, incorporation of additives to the support showed that the different catalytic functions can be selectively affected. A systematic study concerned with catalytic cracking of coal-derived liquids, viz., an SRC-II middle-heavy distillate and four hydrotreated SRC-II products was carried out in the range of 375 to 500/sup 0/C (LHSV, 0.2 to 3.9 h/sup -1/). Hydrotreatment, even to a limited extent, results in a remarkable improvement in the yield of gasoline-range products from the SRC-II distillate. This improvement is ascribed to: (a) hydrogenolysis reactions leading to lower molecular weight feedstock components and (b) limited hydrogenation of aromatic rings leading to polycyclic feed components with sufficient concentration of hydroaromatic rings needed for effective cracking. The results with model compounds and the data on hydrogen consumption during hydrotreatment of SRC-II liquids indicate that for tricyclic, tetracyclic, and pentacyclic coal-liquid components the optimal concentration of hydroaromatic rings for effective subsequent cracking is at least two rings per molecule.

Therefore, a systematic catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) study of coal-derived liquids and related model compounds is being carried out. This study provides information not only on the mechanism of HDO as related to the subject of catalytic upgrading of coal-derived liquids, but also on the role of oxygen-containing compounds in primary coal liquefaction processes. The main objective of this research project is to develop effective catalyst systems and processing conditions for hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) of coal-derived liquids (CDL) in a wide range of nitrogen contents and structural type composition. This is of particular importance in view of the higher concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds in CDL as compared to that in petroleum feedstocks. For a better understanding of denitrogenation processes, the project includes systematic denitrogenation studies not only of CDL but also of related model N-containing compounds found in such liquids, e.g., phenanthridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, carbazoles, acridines, etc., as a function of catalysts type and experimental rate, mechanism and stereochemistry of HDN of structurally distinct N-containing aromatic systems in the presence of sulfided catalysts.

Book excerpt: Analysis of a group of coal liquids produced by catalytic hydrogenation of Utah coals with ZnCl/sub 2/ catalyst was begun. Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography techniques will be used to correlate chemical properties with hydrogenation reactivity. Equipment previously used for downflow measurements of heat and momentum transfer in a gas-coal suspension was modified for upflow measurements. The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of methyl benzoate has been studied to elucidate the reactions of ester during upgrading of coal-derived liquids. The kinetics of hydrogenation of phenanthrene have also been determined. The catalytic cracking mechanism of octahydroanthracene is reported in detail. Studies of the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene indicate that some thiophene is strongly adsorbed as a hydrogen-deficient polymer on cobalt-molybdate catalyst. Part of the polymer can be desorbed as thiophene by hydrogenation. Poisoning of the catalyst inhibits the hydrosulfurization activity to a greater degree than the hydrogenation activity. Iron-manganese catalysts for carbon monoxide hydrogenation is studied to determine the role of iron carbide formation on selectivity. Pure iron catalyst forms a Hagg iron carbide phase under reaction conditions.

Book excerpt: The thermal and catalytic baseline runs continued with HDS-1442A as the reference catalyst and toluene soluble conversion as the basis for liquefaction performance. Results from these experiments suggested that a 30-minute run time should be selected for screening experiments. No promising candidates for testing in the continuous aging unit were identified. Catalyst Aging Tests: Eastern Coal was centered around evaluation of the new SRC II slurry oil as a liquefaction solvent as well as a design change in the catalyst basket for the continuous aging unit. Uncertainties in Run 5188 clouded the assessment of the slurry oil effect. Subsequent runs with the new SRC II solvent indicated that slurry oil effects are small. Catalyst Aging Tests: Western Coal concentrated on ascertaining the liquefaction behavior of a Western Coal such as Wyodak with AMOCAT type catalysts. Simplifications were made in the composition of our synthetic coal feed to improve analytical and kinetic accuracy. Using SRC II heavy distillate as the slurry oil and Illinois No. 6 coal feed, the results from the aging test are quite clear. The recently prepared 500 pound batch of AMOCAT 1A is good quality and exhibits highly improved performance over the H-Coal catalyst, HDS-1442A. Benzene and hexane soluble conversion are markedly higher with hexane soluble conversion declining less rapidly with time. The highly improved catalyst should be considered for future evaluation in the larger H-Coal process development unit.
