Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the substantial increase in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over the past century, multiple technologies are being explored to capture this greenhouse gas and utilize it as a viable feedstock. A promising outlet for CO2 is hydrogenation to methanol. Methanol is widely used in the chemical industry, primarily in the production of formaldehyde, methyl-tert-butyl-ether, and acetic acid, as well as an alternative to traditional fuels due to its superior combustion properties. In addition, significant research is ongoing to utilize methanol as an energy carrier for use in fuel cells. Significant research has been done to understand the kinetic performance of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst for methanol synthesis, however, much of this research involves lower pressures (

Book excerpt: During the oil embargo, in the winter 1973174, parts of Western Europe present ed an almost war-like aspect on Saturdays and Sundays: no traffic on the high ways, no crowds at ski resorts and other weekend entertainment places, no gaso line at the pumps. Living and teaching then in that part of the world, and discussing the situa tion with our students, we came to the conclusion that it would be timely to col lect the fine chemistry already known at the time in the field of conversion of coal to gasoline and other chemicals, and by this way help to draw the attention to this important alternative to crude oil. The idea of this book was born. The energy shock of the early seventies has been healthy and of great conse quences in chemistry. Large amounts of research money have been put to work since, and our knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of coal-based chemistry has increased enormously. During several years it appeared inap propriate to write a monograph about a topic which was in the midst of such an impetuous development. Nevertheless, we collected, and critically selected, the upcoming work as it appeared in the literature, and also tried to provide some modest input ourselves. Now, ten years later, the situation seems to be settled to a certain degree.
Book Synopsis Preparation and Characterization of Cu/Zno Catalysts by : Stefan Zander
Download or read book Preparation and Characterization of Cu/Zno Catalysts written by Stefan Zander and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methanol is one of the most important industrial base chemicals and also a starting material for many organic syntheses. A steadily rising amount is used as fuel or fuel additive because methanol can serve as liquid hydrogen carrier. In the chemical industry, methanol is produced from synthesis gas over Cu/ZnO based catalysts. The catalyst is prepared by a multi-step synthesis (co-precipitation, calcination, reduction). Already in early stages of the preparation structural characteristics can provide indications for the resulting activity of the final catalyst. In order to investigate correlations between preparation parameters, microstructure and activity of Cu/ZnO based catalysts, the effects of the pH during co-precipitation and aging, use of MgO instead of ZnO and doping with Ga-ions were examined in the present work. Precursors, calcined and reduced samples were investigated with different methods (XRD, XRF, physisorption, TPR, RFC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, XAS, XPS, SEM, TEM) and selected samples were tested in methanol synthesis.

Book excerpt: Unlike homogeneous catalysts, heterogeneous catalysts that have been optimized through decades are typically so complex and hard to characterize that the nature of the catalytically active site is not known. This is one of the main stumbling blocks in developing rational catalyst design strategies in heterogeneous catalysis. We show here how to identify the crucial atomic structure motif for the industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 methanol synthesis catalyst. Using a combination of experimental evidence from bulk-, surface-sensitive and imaging methods collected on real high-performance catalytic systems in combination with DFT calculations. We show that the active site consists of Cu steps peppered with Zn atoms, all stabilized by a series of well defined bulk defects and surface species that need jointly to be present for the system to work.
