This course is intended to offer the advantages of a thorough English and business education to that large class of our youth who, not intending to follow the professions, stand in no immediate need of classical training but for whom it is of such vast importance that they be well grounded in their faith and spend a few years at least under healthy religious influence. From Wednesday in Holy Week to Wednesday in Easter Week. The feasts of St. Patrick and St. Aloysius. Fast Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day of the Artillery Election. Extraordinary holidays are conceded, but rarely, at the judgment of the President. The hours of attendance are from 81/2 A. M. to 2 P.M., with recesses at convenient intervals. On Saturdays, schools close at 1 P.M.; and on eves of festivals of obligation at 12 M. The first half-hour of each day is occupied in the celebration of Mass. One hour a day is spent in the class of Arithmetic or Mathematics; two hours a week in the study of modern languages; the rest of the time is allotted to the principal class, that of English, Latin and Greek. The Fathers of the Society of Jesus, by whom the College is conducted, have for object to impart a religious, classical and scientific education. The act of incorporation provides that "no student in said college shall be refused admission to, or denied any of the privileges, honors or degrees of said college on account of the religious opinions he may entertain." Students that are not Catholics will not be required to participate in any exercise distinctively Catholic; nor will any undue influence be used to induce a change of religious belief. Catholic students will be required to hear Mass every day, unless distance of residence should furnish reason for exemption; to recite the daily catechetical lesson; to attend the weekly lecture on the doctrines of the Church, and the annual retreat; to present themselves to their confessor every month; and, if they have never received the Sacraments of Penance, Confirmation or Holy Eucharist, to prepare for their reception. On admission, the pupil is examined to determine what classes he should enter. Subsequent progress in the course will depend altogether upon his progress in learning. From the inequality of preparation found in students entering, detention for more than a year in the lowest classes, is of more frequent occurrence.
