Book Synopsis Publishing Networks in France in the Early Era of Print by : Diane E. Booton
Download or read book Publishing Networks in France in the Early Era of Print written by Diane E. Booton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines commercial and personal connections in the early modern book trade in Paris and northwestern France, ca. 1450–1550. The book market, commercial trade, and geo-political ties connected the towns of Paris, Caen, Angers, Rennes, and Nantes, making this a fertile area for the transference of different fields of knowledge via book culture. Diane Booton investigates various aspects of book production (typography and illustration), market (publishers and booksellers), and ownership (buyers and annotators) and describes commercial and intellectual dissemination via established pathways, drawing on primary and archival sources.

Download or read book The Cooke sisters written by Gemma Allen and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-16 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of five remarkable sixteenth-century women. Part of the select group of Tudor women allowed access to a formal education, the Cooke sisters were also well-connected through their marriages to influential Elizabethan politicians. Drawing particularly on the sisters’ own writings, this book demonstrates that the sisters’ education extended far beyond that normally allowed for sixteenth-century women, challenging the view that women in this period were excluded from using their formal education to practical effect. It reveals that the sisters’ learning provided them with opportunities to communicate effectively their own priorities through their translations, verse and letters. By reconstructing the sisters’ networks, it demonstrates how they worked alongside – and sometimes against – family members over matters of politics and religion, empowered by their exceptional education. Providing new perspectives on these key issues, it will be essential reading for early modern historians and literary scholars.

Download or read book Catalogue of the Library and Collection written by Robert C. Waterston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Library and Collection: Of Autograph Letters, Papers, and Documents; Bequeathed to the Massachusetts Historical Society By his will the Reverend Robert C. Waterston left under certain conditions to the Massachusetts Historical Society his library and collection of autograph letters, papers and documents, besides the sum of $40,000 for specified purposes. These conditions have now been complied with; and the printing of this catalogue was one of the purposes named by Mr. Waterston. The library is a miscellaneous collection, such as a man of leisure and literary tastes would make, who in a general way followed his own personal inclination rather than any special branch of study. Books relating to England and Great Britain and works on architecture and the fine arts are largely represented in the collection. There are also some missals and other early manuscripts, and nearly a score of incunabula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Catalogue of the Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana written by Newberry Library and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1968-11 with total page 890 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Everett D. Graff Collection of Western Americana consists of some 10,000 books, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets, broadsides, broadsheets, and photographs, of which about half are described in the present catalogue. The Graff Collection displays the remarkable breadth of interest, knowledge, and taste of a great bibliophile and student of Western American history. From this rich collection, now in The Newberry Library, Chicago, its former Curator, Colton Storm, has compiled a discriminating and representative Catalogue of the rarer and more unusual materials. Collectors, bibliographers, librarians, historians, and book dealers specializing in Americana will find the Graff Catalogue an interesting and essential tool. Detailed collations and binding descriptions are cited, and many of the more important works have been annotated by Mr. Graff and Mr. Storm. An extensive index of persons and subjects makes the book useful to the scholar as well as to the collector and dealer. The book is not a bibliography but rather a guide to rare or unique source materials now enriching The Newberry Library's outstanding holdings in American history.
