Book Synopsis Old Scotstoun & Whiteinch by : Sandra Malcolm
Download or read book Old Scotstoun & Whiteinch written by Sandra Malcolm and published by . This book was released on 2003-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two densely populated areas of Glasgow have seen some major changes over the past 100 years: the building of the Clyde Tunnel led to the demolition of numerous tenements in Whiteinch, whilst virtually all of the heavy industry ranged along the Clyde in this part of the city has now vanished. Included among this selection of pictures are such unlikely subjects as Balshagray Farm and a group of thatched cottages at the corner of Anniesland Road and Lincoln Avenue, both now long-gone. There are also views of Barclay Curle's and Yarrow's shipyards. Pictures of vehicles made by Albion Motors (once located in Scotstoun), as well as numerous views of the trams that served these districts, plus a picture of an early bus and two railway photographs provide coverage of local transport. Elsewhere the changing face of Victoria Park is contrasted with the streets of solid tenements and sandstone villas that still make up much of modern Scotstoun and Whiteinch.

Book Synopsis The History of Coast Artillery in the British Army by : Colonel K. W. Maurice-Jones
Download or read book The History of Coast Artillery in the British Army written by Colonel K. W. Maurice-Jones and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise history of Britain's coastal artillery defences from the death of Elizabeth I to the formal disbanding of the Coastal Artillery arm in 1956. The book, therefore, covers the rise and fall of the British Empire, and as such it is as much concerned with the protection of Britain's far-flung colonial outposts such as Gibraltar and Singapore, as it is with the guarding of the island itself. The author, himself a Royal Artillery man, insists that coast artillery is an offensive weapon, since: 'It was the coast defences that made it possible for the Navy to enact its offensive role by sustaining and securing that service in time of war'. With detailed descriptions and tables of personnel, artillery ordnance, and accounts of the actions fought by coastal artillery in the 17th-19th century wars with France and during the two World Wars, this is an interesting work of history as well as a useful addition to the library of the serious artillery specialist. Illustrated with 17 maps.

This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This regimental history chronicles the Dandy Ninth Battalion Royal Scots from its first forays in the Boer War through the brutal fighting of WWI. After suffering the disastrous Black Week of the Second Boer War, the British Army formed a new Highland battalion, the kilted 9th Royal Scots, which became affectionately known as the Dandy Ninth. It sent volunteers to South Africa and established itself as Edinburgh’s kilted battalion, part of the Territorial Force of part-time soldiers. Mobilized in 1914 as part of the Lothian Brigade, the Dandy Ninth defended Edinburgh from the threat of invasion, and constructed part of the landward defenses around Liberton Tower. They were part-time soldiers and new recruits, drawn from the breadth of society, from lawyers to rugby players and artists, such as the Scottish Colorist F.C.B. Cadell, and William Geissler of the Edinburgh School. In the Great War they mobilized to France and Flanders and served in many of the major actions: in Ypres and on the Somme; at Arras and Cambrai in 1917; and during the 1918 German Spring Offensive at St Quentin. In the Advance to Victory, they were with the 15th (Scottish) Division.

Book excerpt: In the UK, much has happened in the two years since the publication of Richard Harwood's Historic Environment Law, not least the introduction and changes of the UK's Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013. Amongst other amendments, these abolished conservation area consent and introduced heritage partnership agreements, listed building consent orders, and certificates of lawfulness of proposed works. The final changes came into force in April 2014 and are fully discussed in this supplement. The book analyzes the new provisions, including the secondary legislation. It also updates extensive UK case law on the historic environment policies in the National Planning Policy Framework and the statutory duty of special regard to listed buildings, changes to design and access statements, the new Scheduled Monuments policy, the Planning Practice Guidance, and the creation of the Planning Court.
