Book Synopsis The Church of England C.1689-c.1833 by : John Walsh
Download or read book The Church of England C.1689-c.1833 written by John Walsh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-11 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of neglect there has been a resurgence of interest in the history of the Church of England in 'the long eighteenth century'. This volume of essays brings together the fruits of some of this research. Most of the essays have been written, not by traditional ecclesiastical historians, but by political, social and cultural historians, a fact which reflects the diversity of approaches to the study of the Church of England in the eighteenth century. As a whole, the volume demonstrates that religion and the Church can no longer be regarded as a discrete subject in the history of eighteenth-century England, but are central to a full understanding of its life and thought.

Book Synopsis Lairds and Luxury by : Stana Nenadic
Download or read book Lairds and Luxury written by Stana Nenadic and published by John Donald Short Run Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical account of the social, economic and cultural experience of consumption and luxury of the Highlands. It looks at all classes and various professions, finally looking closely at the Highland gentry during a period of significant change. The subject is inspired by a commonly articulated moral criticism of the gentry – that they were more luxurious and feckless than similar groups elsewhere and that their conspicuous consumption ultimately ruined the Highland economy and destroyed Highland social relationships. The book contains both male and female experiences and expectations, using an anthropological approach to uncover the social meaning of the changing material environment that the Highland gentry inhabited – their houses, their clothing and their possessions. An anthropological perspective is also applied to the knowledge practices of the Highland gentry – what they knew; the processes whereby they came to posses that knowledge through education, professional training or life-experience; and the application of that ‘knowledge’ to the creation of their culture.
Book Synopsis The Dundas Despotism by : Michael Fry
Download or read book The Dundas Despotism written by Michael Fry and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2004-07-05 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date biography of Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (1742-1811) and his son Robert, 2nd Viscount Melville (1771-1851). Aided by other members of their family, they ruled Scotland from the 1770s to the 1830s in a period of government later dubbed 'the Dundas Despotism'. Using a mass of new primary and secondary material culled from England, Scotland, Ireland and the United States, Michael Fry here challenges the traditional view that theirs was a corrupt and authoritarian regime. He shows that both father and son sought to achieve good government within the accepted political conventions of the age, and that many of the principles they set out to apply were owed directly to Scottish Enlightenment ideas. The Dundases were also of fundamental importance in drawing Scotland more fully into the United Kingdom and enabling the Union of 1707 to work. This is a sparkling reassessment of a crucial period of Scottish, British and imperial history. The Dundas Despotism was previously published by Edinburgh University Press.
