Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural economics as a field of research involves two areas, culture and economy. These two areas have been traditionally regarded as each other's antithesis. However, the economic aspects of culture have increasingly become a matter of everyday reality for persons working in the cultural field. The economy of culture has always been in the focus of political interest. Political decisions concerning such priority areas as the development of regional institutions, support to the artists and cultural programmes for children and youth have important economic implications. This book deals with a range of topics in cultural economics. It contains original papers by economists workingin the field from 15 different countries and covers a host of both theoretical and practical issues, covering the performing arts, arts marketsand museums. It represents an up-to-date statement of the application of economic ideas to cultural questions.

They move from the early nineteenth century -- when Byron sent his hero Don Juan to meet Catherine the Great, and an English critic sought to come to terms with the challenge of Pushkin -- to a series of Russian-themed exhibitions at venues including the Crystal Palace and Earls Court. The collection looks at British encounters with Russian music, the absorption with Dostoevskii and Chekhov, and finishes by shedding light on Britain's engagement with Soviet film."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: About this Book / Bristol born Banksy is usually categorized as a Street Artist, although his art, in content and form, transcends a narrow understanding of this term. This publication primarily deals with Banksy as a contemporary Urban Artist and his relationship with consumer culture. It examines Banksy not only in light of his illicit work on the street, but also in regard to his gallery exhibitions. The study highlights representative works of his art, pieces which demonstrate his versatility, but also stand for different periods of his oeuvre. This book presents the first academic study of Banksy's art in English; with a history and discussion of the terms Graffiti, Street Art and Urban Art and a rich array of biographical information. It will be of interest to academics and the general public as well. About this Edition / Street Artist Banksy and former Young British artist Damien Hirst are two of the most popular representatives of British contemporary art. Situated in a triangle of art, consumerism and pop culture their work is among the most well-known. A systematic academic study of their artistic viewpoints and references to consumer culture has long been missing, and Ulrich Blanche is finally closing this gap: He examines Hirst's and Banksy's art against the background of the London art scene since 1980. Blanche points out connections to Duchamp, Warhol and Koons, and reflects on the role of the observer, the meaning of location and, especially, the references between art, consumer culture and marketing in their pieces. This two volume edition is the translated and expanded version of the authors dissertational thesis."

Book excerpt: In Visualizing Coregency, Lisa Saladino Haney explores the practice of co-rule during Egypt’s 12th Dynasty and the role of royal statuary in expressing the dynamics of shared power. Though many have discussed coregencies, few have examined how such a concept was expressed visually. Haney presents both a comprehensive accounting of the evidence for coregency during the 12th Dynasty and a detailed analysis of the full corpus of royal statuary attributed to Senwosret III and Amenemhet III. This study demonstrates that by the reign of Senwosret III the central government had developed a wide-ranging visual, textual, and religious program that included a number of distinctive portrait types designed to convey the central political and cultural messages of the dynasty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Book excerpt: *This richly illustrated and scholarly catalogue accompanies an exhibition at Carlton Hobbs in New York, January 2017. Among the 25 beautiful works, dating from the early Renaissance to the Neoclassical period, are important statuettes by masters such as Gianfrancesco Susini, Willem Danielsz van Tetrode, Masimiliano Soldani-Benzi, Pietro Tacca and Joseph Nollekens. This elegant catalog accompanies the latest in a series of acclaimed exhibitions by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art at Carlton Hobbs LLC in New York (19-27 January 2017). It includes works by some of the greatest European sculptors from the Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods - a serene polychromed stucco Madonna and Child by the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti (c.1378-1455) from c.1423-40, along with two polychrome glazed terracottas by Santi (1494-1576) and Benedetto Buglioni (1459-1521). There are also a number of newly discovered masterpieces in bronze, for which Tomasso Brothers are now synonymous, which include a magnificent, striding, early bronze after the antique by Willem Danielsz van Tetrode (c.1525-1580). Intriguingly, the Castiglioni Hercules and Antaeus by Pietro Tacca is conjectured to have been made to celebrate a marriage between the great houses of Medici and Della Rovere, c.1620-37. The exhibition also includes a unique 'dancing' version of the ancient Borghese Satyr by Gian Francesco Susini, a highly finished composition of Ganymede and the Eagle by Massimiliano Soldani- Benzi (1656-1740) and an extremely rare gilt-bronze relief by the enigmatic court sculptor to Charles I of England, Francesco Fanelli (1577-c.1661). Amongst the finest and most exquisite objects on show are the newly discovered terracotta roundels by John Bacon the Elder (1740-1799) after frescoes found at Pompeii, that were later translated into black basalt and white stoneware versions by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795). Other treasures in terracotta include two works by Joseph Nollekens (1732-1823) depicting Eve bewailing the death of Abel and Lot and his Daughters, both believed to have been bought by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in Nollekens' posthumous sale of 1823. The carefully researched entries accompany beautiful photography and are bolstered by significant contributions from Charles Avery, Giancarlo Gentilini, Stefano Grandesso and Lorenzo Principi.
