Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selling Russia's Treasures documents one of the great cultural dramas of the twentieth century: the sale, by a cash-hungry Soviet government, of the artistic treasures accumulated by the Russian aristocracy over the centuries and nationalized after the October 1917 revolution. An astonishing variety of objects, from icons and illuminated manuscripts to Fabergé eggs and Old Master paintings, entered the collections of wealthy Westerners like Andrew Mellon and Armand Hammer in the 1920s and 30s. Written by the leading experts in the field and long regarded as the definitive book on the subject, the original Russian edition of Selling Russia's Treasures is sought after scholars and laymen alike. Now, for the first time, it is made available in English, in a revised and expanded edition that includes a new chapter on the secret files of the Hermitage, previously considered lost, as well as new research on the sale of religious art, and of twentieth-century French masterworks from the Museum of New Western Art. Numerous color plates reunite long-dispersed works in a virtual museum that illustrates the powerful blow inflicted on Russia's cultural heritage by these secretive sales, and rare photographs and archival documents help bring this buried history to light.

Fabre has created a number of new works especially for this exhibition displaying more than two hundred.Jan Fabre (Antwerp, 1958) is an artist and a director and uses his works to speculate in a loud and tangible manner about life and death, physical and social transformations as well as the nature of cruelty, which is present in both animals and humans. As a grandson of a famous entomologist, Jan Fabre widely uses wildlife aesthetics. He uses beetle shells, animal skeletons and horns as well as stuffed animals and images of animals in various materials. The list of unusual materials goes beyond that and covers blood and BIC blue ink. As emphasized by the painter and acknowledged by critics and researchers, his art goes back to the traditions of classic Flemish art, which he admires: Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens are his main inspiration.

Book Synopsis Civilization by : Helen Fewster (Editor)
Download or read book Civilization written by Helen Fewster (Editor) and published by . This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the beginning of human history, the one thing that has defined us is our talent for making things, from basic technology and everyday objects, such as bowls and hand axes, to high-tech inventions, such as supersonic aircraft, smart devices, and Mars rovers. Objects speak volumes about a civilization, telling us how our ancestors lived - as well as what they believed in and valued. A bronze cat mummy shows us how highly the ancient Egyptians valued their feline companions, while a mechanical tiger toy tells the story of rising tensions between an Indian sultan and European colonisers. With stunning, specially commissioned photography, Civilization shows you the objects that our ancestors treasured - from the jewellery worn by the Mesopotamians to the prized ritual vessels used by the people of the Shang dynasty - and gives you an insight into what gave each culture its own identity. From astrolabes and aeroplanes to vacuum cleaners and X-rays, DK uses its hallmark visual style to weave the extraordinary legacy of our creativity into a unique view of world history that will change the way you see the objects all around us."--Publisher.
Book Synopsis Treasures Into Tractors by : Anne Odom
Download or read book Treasures Into Tractors written by Anne Odom and published by Hillwood Museum & Gardens. This book was released on 2009 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen scholars from Russia, Vienna, and the United States explore the fate of Russian art collections and libraries following the Russian Revolution in 1917, the institutions and individuals responsible for their sale, and the prominent collectors, libraries, and museums that acquired them. Unlike the widely publicized controversy surrounding Soviet-Nazi war loot and its restitution, the sales of the interwar period are not well known outside a small scholarly community. This volume reveals the extent of the Soviet government's voluntary ?realization? of Russia's cultural patrimony between 1918 and 1938 and its consequences for both the international art market and the perception of Russian art. The imperial Easter eggs by Fabergé and Old-Master paintings purchased by Andrew Mellon from the State Hermitage and now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. are the most celebrated works that changed hands. Equally significant are the bibliographic rarities from imperial libraries, icons and liturgical art from churches and monasteries, and antiques, furnishings and fine art from estates, palaces, and private homes. Download or read book Marcel Gautherot written by Sergio Burgi and published by Scheidegger and Spiess. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marcel Gautherot is regarded by many as one of the most significant French photographers. Yet he is not as well known, and even less published, as some of his contemporaries. The most famous part of his work is the documentation of the construction of the Brazilian capital Brasilia 1958-1960, consisting of around 3,000 images, and also later images he took of this extraordinary place until the 1970s, widely appreciated as a high point of 20th-century architectural photography. Gautherot was born in Paris in 1910. In 1925, when he already was an architect's apprentice, he enrolled in an evening class in architecture at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs. He continued his education in architecture and interior design at college and working for various firms, with a keen interest in the Esprit Nouveau and Bauhaus movements and their respective proponents such as Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In the early 1930, he abandoned his studies in architecture to follow his interest in photography and his desire to travel, and joined Alliance Photo, a photo agency in Paris. From 1936, Gautherot also worked for the Musee de l'Homme in Paris, documenting the museum's collection but also to photograph the French regions and their local culture, and on a seven-month trip to Mexico. Another extensive journey led him to Brazil and Peru in 1939. On the outbreak of World War II, he was drafted into the French army and served in Senegal. Gautherot was demobilized after the French surrender in summer 1940 and decided not to return to occupied Paris. Instead, he returned to Brazil and made Rio de Janeiro his home for the entire rest of his life. He quickly made friends and engaged in dialogue with a circle of artists and intellectuals who were soon to become important figures in Brazilian culture, including the architect Oscar Niemeyer and landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose work he documented extensively. From 1947, he worked for various magazines, the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service and the Campaign for the Preservation of National Folklore. For the country's foreign ministry he produced around 30 booklets on Brazilian culture. He worked in all the country's regions, often travelling with his friend, colleague, and compatriot Pierre Verger, who has also settled in Brazil. Upon Gautherot's passing in 1996, his archive was bequeathed to the Institut Moreiras Salles in Rio de Janeiro. The new book Marcel Gautherot: The Monograph is the first ever comprehensive book on Gautherot's entire work as a photographer. It features some 200 of his striking pictures in high-quality triton printing. The images are complemented by essays on his affinity for modern architecture by Jean-Louis Cohen, his contribution to the history of photography by Michel Frizot, and on his attachment to Brazil by Samuel Titan.
