Book excerpt: "This extensively illustrated catalogue is published in conjunction with the first comprehensive exhibition devoted to the arts of the samurai, including the finest examples of swords - the spirit of the samurai - as well as sword mountings and fittings, armor and helmets, saddles, textiles, and paintings. The works in the catalogue, drawn from public and private collections in Japan, include 34 officially designated National Treasures and 64 Important Cultural Properties, the largest number ever to be shown together at one time. Dating from the 5th to the early 20th century, these majestic objects offer a complete picture of samurai culture and its unique blend of the martial and the refined." "Many of the greatest Japanese swordsmiths are represented in this volume, from early masters such as Yasuie (12th century) and Tomomitsu (14th century) to the Edo-period smiths Nagasone Kotetsu and Kiyomaro. The blades by these and other masters, cherished as much for their beauty as for their cutting efficiency, were equipped with elaborate hilts and scabbards prized for their exquisite craftsmanship and fine materials such as silk, rayskin, gold, lacquer, and certain alloys unique to Japan. Japanese armor is also fully surveyed, from the rarest iron armor of the Kofun period (5th century) to the inventive ceremonial helmets made toward the end of the age of the samurai." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION THE long interval, nearly twenty years, that has been allowed to elapse since the last edition of Japan and its art was issued and exhausted, would seem to call for some explanation to a public that has for some time been asking for a further one. The reasons for the delay are two. First and foremost, the changes in Japan, in her maltiers, customs, and even her Arts. These have been so continuous, the old order giving place to the new with such rapidity, that it has seemed impossible to keep abreast of them in any record that might be prepared. Secondly, the authors leisure has been taken up with other literary tasks, specially the Honorary Editorship of the Japan Societys Tuaasnrfioru, during our fourteen years, and the Editorship of the English edition of Count Okumas Fifty Years of Sew Japan. But the recent break in the Iistory of Japan, owing to the close of the Alejera, and the commencement of that of Taisho.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this publication I try to systematically and comprehensively process the subject of ,,Japanese sword mountings". It was not my goal to depict as many extant interpretations of sword mountings as possible but to deal with their different styles. With this publication the reader will be informed in which way the Japanese swords were mounted over time, the origins of the various styles, what changes they underwent and it will also serve as a reference material to classify extant specimen. In this sense the descriptions were embedded in an explanation of their historical context rather then listing them simply by their interpretation or in alphabetical order. As the main focus lies on ,,koshirae", explanations on the sword fittings - the tosogu - were omitted because their descriptions can be easily found elsewhere. Also, the military mountings - the gunto-koshirae - were left out because there are excellent publications available which deal with them in great detail.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... part iv symbols and symbolic objects Fkom the varied number of the art objects of Japan, it is difficult to select only such as are of direct symbolic import, for the artists and designers have drawn untiringly from the realm of legend and symbolic design for the decorative motives of all objects, whatever their use. In order to keep within certain bounds, however, an attempt has been made to restrict the choice of objects described in this section to those of ritual or ceremonial use, and to the attributes of the deities. This, of course, necessitates the omission of such familiar and interesting objects as the inro, or tiered medicine case; the smoker's quaint outfit; the artist's boxes; the tsuba, and other sword furniture, which have been very slightly touched upon in the article on the sword; and, perhaps the most important of all, the netsuke.1 A collection of these last-mentioned exquisitely carved bits of ivory, which were used to prevent the slipping of the pendant purse, biro, or tobacco pouch from the sash or belt, would probably show representations of every legend, symbol, and deity mentioned in this book, but the utilitarian character of their use excludes them under the classification adopted. i Albert Brockhaus. Netsuki. Versuch einer Geschichte der Japanischen Schnitzkunst. Marcus Bourne Huish, ' The Evolution of a Netsuki, ' Transactions and Proceedings of the Japan Society, vn (1897), pp. 2-16. Henri L. Joly, Legend in Japanese Art, article, "Netsuke." takara-bune (Ship of Good Fortune) On the second day of the New Year, the symbol-loving Japanese place under their pillows slips of paper having representations of the Tdkara-bune drawn upon them, with the prayer that this Ship of Good Fortune may come into port on the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a catalogue of a special exhibition (1907-1908) of Japanese sword guards, or tsuba, has been prepared by Mr. Okabe-Kakuya. To our knowledge it is the first attempt to treat the history of the tsuba and tsuba makers apart from the other branches of metal work which enter into the ornamentation of the Japanese sword. Of the three sections into which the book is divided, the first gives a brief general history of the art, specifying the different periods in which the artists worked, the various circumstances and influences which from time to time caused new developments of form and material, and the results due to these changes. The illustrations in this section are reproductions of drawings by Mr. Okabe from woodcuts in the Japanese books at the Museum. The second section consists of an alphabetical list of the more important schools of tsuba makers. The list of names given is strictly confined to those of men who actually made tsuba, and does not include artists who worked only in other forms of metal work. The third section serves as a guide to the present exhibition. It is accompanied with half-tone plates giving typical illustrations of various schools and artists. In instances where the execution, design, or material is of particular interest, special notes have been added.
